Being immortal is not as advertised in the year 2792. In a world where humans with the means to do so can live forever in artificial bodies, 'carnationist' (body creator and soul installer) Harry Higgins becomes entranced by a beautiful, artificial woman who he purchases from a shady dealer. This mysterious woman, Kora, has the 'husk' body of an immortal (transcended) human, but has illegally been installed with artificial intelligence. Those two systems were never meant to mesh, and Harry tries to mentor Kora as she struggles to control her functionality and recover 'human' memories she insists she has. Meanwhile, Harry faces his own demons. He is suffering from an affliction called 'expiration fever'. When artificial bodies (husks) were developed, it was recognized by the creator of this technology (a genius named LaPorte) that human minds and souls occasionally need to recharge. His stasis deep sleep system, or SDS, is the answer to this, allowing for multiple year naps for this purpose. However, the SDS system has been offline for more than 50 years, with zero sign of ever returning. As expiration fever takes him, Harry's mind wanders from being sane to delusional. Soon, Harry comes to believe that he can do the impossible and pass Kora off as a transcended human in his secluded society. He whimsically mentions this to his friend and colleague, Melbray, and a bet is placed as to whether he can fool everyone at festival celebrating the creation of immortal technology. This ignites an adventure, as Harry attempts to keep his mind sound while navigating this wager to a successful end.

The counterinsurgency (COIN) paradigm dominates military and political conduct in contemporary Western strategic thought. It assumes future wars will unfold as "low intensity" conflicts within rather than between states, requiring specialized military training and techniques. COIN is understood as a logical, effective, and democratically palatable method for confronting insurgency-a discrete set of practices that, through the actions of knowledgeable soldiers and under the guidance of an expert elite, creates lasting results. Through an extensive investigation into COIN's theories, methods, and outcomes, this book undermines enduring claims about COIN's success while revealing its hidden meanings and effects. Interrogating the relationship between counterinsurgency and war, the authors question the supposed uniqueness of COIN's attributes and try to resolve the puzzle of its intellectual identity. Is COIN a strategy, a doctrine, a theory, a military practice, or something else? Catalyst production for the transformation of crudes into gasoline and other fuel products is a billion dollar/year business and fluid cracking catalysts (FCCs) represent almost half of the refinery catalyst market. During the cracking reactions, the FCC surface is contaminated by metals (Ni, V, Fe, Cu, Na) and by coke deposition. As a result, the catalyst activity and product selectivity is reduced to unacceptable levels thus forcing refiners to replace part of the recirculating equilibrium FCC inventory with fresh FCC to compensate for losses in catalyst performance. About 1,100 tons/day of FCC are used worldwide in over 200 fluid cracking catalyst units (FCCUs). It is for these reasons that refiners' interest in FCC research has remained high through the years almost independantly, of crude oil prices. However, recent oil company mergers and the dissolution of research laboratories, have drastically decreased the number of researchers involved in petroleum refining research projects; as a result the emphasis of research has shifted from new materials to process improvements and this trend is clearly reflected in the type of papers contained in this volume. Modern spectroscopic techniques continue to be essential in the understanding of catalyst performance and several chapters in the book describe the use of 27Al, 29Si and 13C NMR to study variation in FCC acidity during aging and coke deposition. In addition several chapters have been dedicated to the modeling of FCC deactivation, and to the understanding of contact times on FCC performance. Refiners efforts to conform with environmental regulations are reflected in chapters dealing with sulfur removal, metals contaminants and olefin generation.
Presented in this monograph is the current state-of-the-art in the theory of convex structures. The notion of convexity covered here is considerably broader than the classic one; specifically, it is not restricted to the context of vector spaces. Classical concepts of order-convex sets (Birkhoff) and of geodesically convex sets (Menger) are directly inspired by intuition; they go back to the first half of this century. An axiomatic approach started to develop in the early Fifties. The author became attracted to it in the mid-Seventies, resulting in the present volume, in which graphs appear side-by-side with Banach spaces, classical geometry with matroids, and ordered sets with metric spaces. A wide variety of results has been included (ranging for instance from the area of partition calculus to that of continuous selection). The tools involved are borrowed from areas ranging from discrete mathematics to infinite-dimensional topology.Although addressed primarily to the researcher, parts of this monograph can be used as a basis for a well-balanced, one-semester graduate course.
