Politics, Subsidies and Competition

Politics, Subsidies and Competition

Politics, Subsidies and Competition focuses on the interplay of political, economic and institutional-legal factors in the formation of European competition policy, with particular emphasis on European Union control of national subsidies. This book demonstrates the increasing significance of the EU in the management of European economies. It argues that state subsidization is the only remaining effective form of state intervention because, in the integrated European market, state aid - ranging from investment and export aid to special tax concessions - has become the only instrument that can be used to favour and protect national industries. This makes the control of state subsidization more important than ever, and the European Community's attempts to increase this control since the mid-1970s tell an intriguing story of fierce intergovernmental bargaining, business lobbying and increasingly assertive EC/EU institutions. The argument is supported by evidence of the evolution of European policy and by case studies of sectoral aid regimes and their transformation in interaction with EU policy. This book will be of use to students and scholars of the economics and politics of Western Europe and regional and public policy.

Stream Ecology: Structure and Function of Running Waters is designed to serve as a textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and as a reference source for specialists in stream ecology and related fields. This Third Edition is thoroughly updated and expanded to incorporate significant advances in our understanding of environmental factors, biological interactions, and ecosystem processes, and how these vary with hydrological, geomorphological, and landscape setting. The broad diversity of running waters – from torrential mountain brooks, to large, lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy sub-continents – makes river ecosystems appear overwhelming complex. A central theme of this book is that although the settings are often unique, the processes at work in running waters are general and increasingly well understood.Even as our scientific understanding of stream ecosystems rapidly advances, the pressures arising from diverse humanactivities continue to threaten the health of rivers worldwide. This book presents vital new findings concerning human impacts, and the advances in pollution control, flow management, restoration, and conservation planning that point to practical solutions.Reviews of the first edition:".. an unusually lucid and judicious reassessment of the state of stream ecology" Science Magazine"..provides an excellent introduction to the area for advanced undergraduates and graduate students…" Limnology & Oceanography"… a valuable reference for all those interested in the ecology of running waters." Transactions of the American Fisheries Society Reviews of the second edition:"Overall, a must for the field centre and a good starter text in stream ecology." (TEN News, October, 2007)"Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty." (P. R. Pinet, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (7), 2008) "... a very good, fluidly readable book which contains the latest key scientific knowledge of the ecology of running waters." (Daniel Graeber, International Review of Hydrobiology, Vol. 94 (2), 2009)

Abuse perpetuated against children and adolescents is a reality that jeopardises their physical and mental health, compromising their quality of life and well-being both in the present and in the future, as it leaves serious and often irreversible consequences. The relevance of this topic is based on the difficulty felt and observed in the context of clinical nursing practice in identifying, notifying and referring situations of child/adolescent abuse, which makes it necessary to raise nurses' awareness of this reality. The practice and behaviour of professionals in dealing with child and adolescent victims of abuse are closely related to the still obscure visibility that the problem assumes in everyday life. Reflecting on the concepts of the different types of abuse and the ideas associated with them helps to understand how to deal with identifiable cases.
