Since the very first issue of the Hudson Valley Style Magazine, we wondered what this seemingly local concept means for the rest of the World. In the Winter 2019 issue, we are not only traveling to discover Modern Rustic Style on the warm and sunny Caribbean Islands with best selling author Mario Molinari. We are also seeing the proof of the fact that concepts of sustainable and socially responsible design are universal for all parts of the Globe, especially those that are affected by climate change.Humans are very resilient creatures and it shows in our ability to adapt, rebuild and take our ideas to the new heights while improving and moving forward to a better and more sustainable future.Executive Editor, Maxwell L. We recognise Mario Botta's buildings for their strong presence. His architecture is not ephemeral. It shapes the mass firmly and precisely. It touches the ground with self-reliance. A building by Mario Botta is an autonomous object. It comprises an ordered world of its own make. It is standing in dialogue with the urban tissue, but it establishes its own order as if it aims at differentiation instead of integration. Architectural order represents the core of his personal idiom. It is a well structured, compositional order which organises everything into a whole, as an underlying thread that connects and brings together houses on the mountains to museums and churches, banks and commercial buildings to buildings on the ground and buildings underground, different buildings at different places in time. The themes that underlie Mario Botta's architecture are ties that connect and spines that support, common threads that bind one building to the next. His architecture is one of mass. It is then of no surprise that mass is the first thing to be defined and ordered, in his creative process. The volume of his buildings is mostly composed by one or more primary solids. Volume is thus an a-priori for Botta. It is conceived beforehand, the starting point to the adventure of architectural design. From the Introduction, Thoughts on architectural creativity By Dr. Irena Sakellaridou

Reconsidering The new Industrial Parks near Irvi – by Mario Pfeifer, 2009
Using the work of Lewis Baltz, a leading photographer of the 1975 New Topographics movement, as a jumping-off point, this book documents Mario Pfeifer's multi-faceted work, Reconsidering The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California by Lewis Baltz, 1974. Pfeifer went on the road to track down the buildings photographed by Baltz and their history, and also sought out where the portfolios of photographs can today be found. Included is a film installation, consisting of two synchronized, looped, and parallel-projected films, that takes as its point of departure the first monograph of Baltz's work, published by Castelli Graphics, New York in 1975. Includes film stills, production stills, an excellent interview with Baltz by Pfeifer, and a critical essay by noted contemporary art historian, Vanessa Joan Muller, essay by Chris Balaschak with introductions by Martin Hochleitner and Julia Moritz.
Mario Garcia Joya - A La Plaza Con Fidel
A la plaza con Fidel (To the plaza with Fidel) is doubly rare among Cuban photobooks: relatively few photobooks were produced in Cuba after the Revolution, and A la plaza con Fidel is also notable for its unique subject matter. Photographed between 1959 and 1966 and published in 1970 by leading Cuban photographer and cinematographer "Mayito" (Mario Garcia Joya, born 1938), the book focuses on Fidel Castro's supporters and the festive atmosphere of the Revolution. Castro would mark important moments of the Revolution, when either revelry or reassurance was called for, with public addresses delivered in Havana's Plaza de la Revolucion; "to the plaza with Fidel" became a refrain of the Revolution. The 21st volume in Errata Editions' Books on Books series, this edition of A la plaza con Fidel presents this little-known book in its entirety, with essays by photography curator Leandro Villaro.

The Los Angeles Times said it best: "Puzo was] a man who . . . remained in the shadows throughout his long career as a novelist and screenwriter, only rarely speaking to the press." That may not seem like such an oddity until one is reminded that during the mid-1970s The Godfather sold more copies per year than any other book except the Bible...Puzo was also a writer who struggled for decades before any success occurred; and only after age 50 was he an author whose success was so prodigious that it affected, tainted, defined, and pigeonholed the artist who, out of economic desperation and romantic imagination (plus will power and the ability to follow through), created the single most recognizable of American protagonists. In the life of Puzo, all roads led to The Godfather. No other writer of his generation created such an internationally embraced, mythic, beloved tale. . . . Although Mario Puzo had received major critical praise for his first two novels (1955's The Dark Arena and 1965's The Fortunate Pilgrim), sales were all but flat. Then: Badly indebted, with five children, pushing 50 and plagued by stress, he vowed to write a best-seller.His third novel was The Godfather. "Backed up by hard facts and filled with behind-the-scenes stories, M. J. Moore's book is a definititive guide for all fans of Mario Puzo who want to know more about his life, work, and personal achievements." --Carol Gino, author of The Nurse's Story, Rusty's Story, and Me & Mario "Puzo's fans will appreciate this warm portrait." --Kirkus Reviews "Moore begins by recounting Puzo's Hell's Kitchen upbringing, his Army service as a clerk during and after WWII, his persistent money troubles ... and his investigation by the FBI for selling draft deferments. Moore is at his best when using these details ..." --Publishers Weekly

In a former tsarist palace in what is now St. Petersburg, botanist Nikola Vavilov (1887-1943), predicting the disappearance of plant biodiversity, built the world's first seed bank. A living museum, the Vavilov Institute hosts roughly 330,000 specimens and stands as a monument to its creator--a scientist who devoted his life to food security and died of starvation, a political scapegoat in the basement of a Soviet prison. One hundred years after Vavilov's first specimen-collecting expedition, Swiss photographer Mario Del Curto (born 1955) retraces the botanist's steps and meets the people who continue his work, seeking, selecting and preserving the planet's plant species. Part meditation on the scope of Vavilov's work and part travelogue into the heart of the Vavilov Institute and its 12 satellite stations, Seeds of the Earth is a beautiful and urgent meditation on food security, ecology and history.

Contributions show the value of Bunge’s science-informed philosophy and his systematic approach to philosophical problems. The chapters explore the exceptionally wide spectrum of Bunge’s contributions to: metaphysics, methodology and philosophy of science, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of physics, philosophy of psychology, philosophy of social science, philosophy of biology, philosophy of technology, moral philosophy, social and political philosophy, medical philosophy, and education. The contributors include scholars from 16 countries.Bunge combines ontological realism with epistemological fallibilism. He believes that science provides the best and most warranted knowledge of the natural and social world, and that such knowledge is the only sound basis for moral decision making and social and political reform. Bunge argues for the unity of knowledge. In his eyes, science and philosophy constitute a fruitful and necessary partnership. Mário de Sá-Carneiro, A Cosmopolitan Modernist

Mário de Sá-Carneiro, A Cosmopolitan Modernist

Peter Lang AG, Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften
2016
nidottu
Although he committed suicide at the age of twenty-five, Mário de Sá-Carneiro left behind a rich corpus of texts that is inventive, playful, even daring. The first collection in English to be dedicated to his work, this volume brings together scholars from Portugal, Brazil, and the USA to reassess Sá-Carneiro’s contribution to Portuguese and European Modernism(s). In the book, established researchers and younger scholars delve into the complexities and paradoxes of his work, exploring not only the acclaimed novella Lucio’s Confession, but also his poetry, short fiction, and correspondence. Each essay engages in the necessary task of placing Sá-Carneiro’s work in a wider literary and artistic context, bringing back to his texts the creative energy of early twentieth-century Europe. Plural in their methods, the essays propose multiple lenses through which to tackle key aspects of Sá-Carneiro’s œuvre: his aesthetic and artistic influences and preoccupations; his negotiations/performances of identity; and the ways in which his work emerges in dialogue with other Modernist authors and how they in turn engage with his work. Though he is sometimes overshadowed by his more famous friend and artistic comrade, Fernando Pessoa, this collection shows just how much one misses, if one overlooks Sá-Carneiro and other writers of the Orpheu generation.
