Marsha L. Dutton; OSB Heisey

Liturgical Press

These spiritual reflections guide their readers toward God’s embrace. In Embracing God, Marsha L. Dutton surveys the interwoven structures and themes of five treatises, showing how Aelred guides his readers to cling forever to God through memory, which is one of the three faculties of God’s image placed in humankind at creation (alongside reason and will). Individual chapters explore meditations on Jesus’ life, spiritual friendship, the eucharistic nature of Cistercian spirituality, and the nature of the soul.

Like the bestselling Waldorf Kindergarten Snack Book and the Waldorf School Book of Soups, this newest book in the series provides yet another a rich resource for spending time in the kitchen with young children--this time baking bread. What child doesn't like to feel and knead bread dough, watch it rise, and then taste it fresh from the oven? Not only is such hands-on sensory experience fun for everyone, it is also invaluable to young children as they continue to incarnate into our world. These recipes have been handed down by grandmothers, mothers, aunts, and friends. They are easy to follow and encourage the baker, young and older alike, to use the best possible ingredients, making bread once again the healthy "staff of life" it once was. The Waldorf Book of Breads includes tasty breads for the daily table and specialty breads for the seasons and special occasions. And, like the Waldorf snack book and the book of soups, The Waldorf Book of Breads is spiral-bound, so it lies flat to make life in the kitchen a little easier. Artist Jo Valens once again provides delightful illustrations to accompany the many recipes for delicious breads.
Lakota Women's Arts: Quillwork and Beadwork

Lakota Women's Arts: Quillwork and Beadwork

Marsha C. Bol; Thomas Haukaas

Museum of New Mexico Press

For it is the mothers, not the warriors, who create a people and guide their destiny. --Luther Standing Bear, Land of the Spotted Eagle Much has been written about Lakota Sioux Indian men and their arts, especially those made in support of their hunting and warrior culture. Historically, however, very little scholarship has addressed Lakota women and their art forms. This lack of attention is still true today, even though the Lakota Sioux are the best-known of the Plains Indian tribal nations and their traditional regalia is widely recognized. These are the people of Chiefs Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Sitting Bull and of the infamous Battles of the Little Big Horn and Wounded Knee. In Lakota Women's Arts, Marsha C. Bol gives recognition to the significant contributions made by Lakota women--particularly through their quillwork and beadwork embroidery--in supporting and maintaining the foundational values of traditional Lakota society. The author explores the underlying motivations that have impelled Lakota women to practice these arts over many centuries, with particular focus on the decades since 1820. To explicate the values expressed in these artforms, Bol gives primacy to first-person voices from members of the Lakota Nation, past and present. In addition to presenting an astonishing array of historic and contemporary Lakota art made by both women and men, this lavishly illustrated volume will provide today's Lakota artists unprecedented access to historical examples of quill- and beadwork that are tucked away in museums and private collections. As Rosalie Little Thunder notes, "Lakota people must have the chance to see these historic Lakota] things as a way of knowing where they've been so that they would know where to go."

As a Gal pague a, Valentina spends her days observing the natural world around her. She greets sea lions splashing on the shore, scampers over lava rocks with Sally-lightfoot crabs, and swims with manta rays. But Valentina also understands the fragility of this wondrous world, and she makes a solemn promise to protect the islands and her animal friends. This delightful bilingual story was inspired by the childhood of Valentina Cruz, whose family was one of the first permanent inhabitants of the Gal pagos. Valentina is now a biologist and naturalist guide who has dedicated her life to the conservation of the islands. Whimsical illustrations by Pura Belpr Honor recipient Angela Dominguez transport readers to these unique islands, which shelter a diverse number of plant and animal species, many found of which can be found nowhere else on the planet. Removing the Roadblocks

Marsha Vannicelli

Guilford Publications
1992

Based on the author's 18 years of experience supervising group therapists, this quintessentially practical book is designed to help practitioners think through and formulate appropriate strategies in their clinical work. Utilizing many clinical examples, and providing explanations throughout for her interventions, Vannicelli pays special attention to the therapeutic stance -- where the clinician positions him or herself in relation to the patient, and why; and how various strategies and techniques maximize the patient's opportunity for therapeutic growth. A hallmark of Dr. Vannicelli's approach, richly illustrated in this work, is her sensitivity to countertransference and the ways it can be used productively in clinical practice.Alone among books in the substance abuse field, REMOVING THE ROADBLOCKS analyzes the group therapy issues that arise in the three populations most commonly seen in substance abuse clinics -- substance abusers themselves, adult children of alcoholics, and other family members. The author describes characteristics unique to each population and addresses overlap among them in terms of basic procedures, formats, and hurdles that group leaders face. The book also differs from most psychotherapy texts by giving the reader an opportunity to hear the voice of an experienced therapist as she provides examples of various kinds of interventions and demonstrates how they might actually be communicated and implemented. Rather than reading about psychotherapy or about various kinds of problems, one has the sense of experiencing a thorough consultation with a truly seasoned supervisor.A particularly useful feature is the appendix at the end of the volume, which provides examples of assessment and intake questionnaires, history questionnaires, ground rules for treatment, contracts, and other practical materials. Designed for all mental health professionals who work with substance abusers, the book's focus on practical clinical issues also makes it ideal for paraprofessionals. It is an excellent text for courses on substance abuse in social work, psychology, nursing, and other disciplines, as well as for courses in group psychotherapy.
Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder

It has since been adapted and tested for a wide range of other difficult-to-treat disorders involving emotion dysregulation. "This is a wise and wonderful book, a book to open minds and nourish souls." --Rabbi Harold Kushner, When Bad Things Happen To Good People"Mirkin is a passionate storyteller who enables us to see ourselves in each story that she tells. The connection between biblical women and people living today is so moving and insightful that it is almost impossible to read this book without feeling inspired to grapple with our own relationships and emerge more fully vested in life and love." --Harriet Lerner, Ph.D., The Dance of AngerThe Women Who Danced by the Sea invites us to embark on a journey that can lead us to deeper connection within ourselves, with those we love, and with the increasingly complex and dangerous world in which we live. The Women Who Danced By The Sea is the first book of its kind to view the lives of biblical women through the lens of contemporary psychological theories. Each chapter looks at a different foremother and a different issue she must grapple with in order to gain the wisdom to move into deeper relationship with herself, those she loves, and the Divine. Dr. Mirkin ties their struggles to those of contemporary women and men she has met in her twenty-year clinical practice and looks at what we can learn from their experiences. Our foremothers' stories offer profound lessons in living. Their legacies can guide us as we face similar challenges, have similar sorrows and confusions and find similar hope and blessings on our path to more intimate connection.Marsha Mirkin, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and resident scholar at Brandeis University Women's Studies Research Center. The ideas for this book are drawn from courses she has been teaching on psychological interpretations and the contemporary relevance of the Bible. Dr. Mirkin has held appointments at Harvard Medical School and Boston University School of Medicine, and has been on the faculty of the Jean Baker Miller Institute at Wellesley College.
