Risk Perception, Culture, and Legal Change

Risk Perception, Culture, and Legal Change

Matteo Ferrari

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2009
sidottu
This study explores the reasons behind the different responses of the legal systems of Europe, Japan and the USA in coping with BSE, one of the major food safety crises in recent years. Making reference to the most recent advances on risk perception that cognitive and social sciences, such as legal anthropology and sociology of law, have experimented with, Risk Perception, Culture, and Legal Change examines the role that culture plays in moulding the process of legal change. Attention is focused on the regulative frameworks implemented to guarantee the safety of the food chain against the BSE menace and on the liability responses sketched to compensate the victims of mad cow disease, showing how both these elements have been influenced by the cultural context within which they are situated.

The ECOMAC project (Eco-management Accounting as a Tool of Environmental Man agement) has provided a framework for linking environmental management with man agement accounting. It was funded in Theme 4, 'Human Dimensions of Environmental Change' in the EU Environment and Climate Research Programme. The project is of high policy relevance by contributing to the on-going debate on eco management accounting, reporting and indicators. It is also an area needing further re search. I would like to thank the research team, companies that participated as associated con tractors, and the advisory panel. Jonathan Parker DG XII/D-5, European Commission Theme on Human Dimensions of Environmental Change 7 Preface The ECOMAC project This document is the final report on the project 'Eco-management accounting as a tool of environmental managemenf (ECOMAC). This research project was conducted under the Environment and Climate Programme (Human Dimension of Environmental Change) of the European Commission (DG XII). The ECOMAC project investigated how companies are using or intend to use environ mental costs and benefits figures in support of their decisions, and what they have been doing to remedy the limitations of conventional management accounting in this area. The research was largely explorative in nature, but the project also produced a structured overview of the subject and made suggestions and recommendations as to how compa nies could improve their own environmental accounting.
Playwriting Playgoers in Shakespeare's Theater

Playwriting Playgoers in Shakespeare's Theater

Matteo A. Pangallo

sidottu
Among the dramatists who wrote for the professional playhouses of early modern London was a small group of writers who were neither members of the commercial theater industry writing to make a living nor aristocratic amateurs dipping their toes in theatrical waters for social or political prestige. Instead, they were largely working- and middle-class amateurs who had learned most of what they knew about drama from being members of the audience. Using a range of familiar and lesser-known print and manuscript plays, as well as literary accounts and documentary evidence, Playwriting Playgoers in Shakespeare's Theater shows how these playgoers wrote and revised to address what they assumed to be the needs of actors, readers, and the Master of the Revels; how they understood playhouse materials and practices; and how they crafted poetry for theatrical effects. The book also situates them in the context of the period's concepts of, and attitudes toward, playgoers' participation in the activity of playmaking. Plays by playgoers such as the rogue East India Company clerk Walter Mountfort or the highwayman John Clavell invite us into the creative imaginations of spectators, revealing what certain audience members wanted to see and how they thought actors might stage it. By reading Shakespeare's theater through these playgoers' works, Matteo Pangallo contributes a new category of evidence to our understanding of the relationships between the early modern stage, its plays, and its audiences. More broadly, he shows how the rise of England's first commercialized culture industry also gave rise to the first generation of participatory consumers and their attempts to engage with mainstream culture by writing early modern "fan fiction."
Christian Monks on Chinese Soil

Christian Monks on Chinese Soil

The contribution of monks to the evangelization of lands not yet reached by the preaching of the Gospel has certainly been remarkable. The specific witness that the monastic community gives is of a radical Christian life naturally radiating outward, and thus it is implicitly missionary. The process of inculturation of Christian monasticism in China required a bold spiritual attitude of openness to the future and a willingness to accept the transformation of monastic forms that had been received. In "Christian Monks on Chinese Soil," Matteo Nicolini-Zani highlights the willingness of foreign monks to encounter the cultural and spiritual realities of China and the degree of acceptance by the Chinese of the form of monastic life that was presented to them by the missionaries.
Ethnic Politics in Post-Soviet Central Asia

Ethnic Politics in Post-Soviet Central Asia

Matteo Fumagalli

The Soviet collapse left about seventy million people, one in four former Soviet citizens, stranded outside of the borders of new states where the majority of their ethnic kins lived. To the surprise of many outside observers, the Central Asian region has escaped the conflicts in which many predicted it would descend in the early 1990s. At the same time it has not been violence-free, as the conflict between groups of Uzbeks and Kyrgyz in Osh, Kyrgyzstan in 2010, Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, the on-going war in the Donbass, and the clashes between Armenians and Azeris over Nagorno-Karabakh in the Spring of 2016 have shown. The book explores how, and to what extent, Central Asia’s ethnic minorities have adjusted to being "at home abroad" nearly three decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It finds that minority groups have alternated between ‘exit’ (from the political system), ‘loyalty’ (participation in it and support for the leadership), and ‘voice’ (contentious politics). In this book, the case of Uzbek minorities living outside of Uzbekistan serves as a vantage point to reflect on questions of cultural and political loyalties, contentious politics, and the relationship between identity and political action. Uzbeks represent the largest non-Russian minority group in Central Asia. They are compactly settled around Uzbekistan’s borders, to this day still contested and often un-demarcated. The relations between Uzbekistan and its neighbours are overall poor, especially with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. For reasons of size, military strength or regional ambitions, the stability of Uzbekistan, and what lies around it, is seen as central to the stability of the whole Central Asian region. The book offers new empirical data and shows that there has been a gradual political, cultural, and economic disenfranchisement of Central Asia’s minority groups in states that are ruled by a narrow circle of elites in weak – yet resilient - states, whose legitimacy is increasingly eroded and that in their attempts to boost such legitimacy and authority they promote ethnic nationalism. It will be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience, including academics working in the field of minority rights and ethnic politics in the post-Soviet space, contentious politics, identity formation and irredentism, separatism and diasporas.

Treating the everyday as central to the study of regional and international politics, this book reconstructs the last two decades of the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, leading up to the 2011 events that sanctioned its fall. It provides a unique and vivid look into the political dynamics that characterized the everyday lives of Libyans, offering a compelling counterargument to those who insist on framing the history of the country as a stateless, authoritarian, and rogue state. Based on the collection of oral histories, what sets the tempo of this journey is an extensive collection of personal anecdotes, moods and emotions, popular jokes and rumors. In weaving the threads that link these quotidian lives to Libya’s interaction with wider international and geopolitical dynamics, the book offers a unique and timely analysis of the 2011 events that witnessed the fall of the regime reaching the current state of violence, war, and hope.

Governments, through their regulatory bodies, typically regulate formal financial sector players such as banks, which can leave providers working in informal remittance systems outside regulatory channels. Value transfer services--financial transfers performed domestically or across borders on behalf of clients--are essential to the financial system, and as such, are often offered by both formal and informal actors. Law enforcement and counter-terrorism authorities are evaluating money and value transmission channels for vulnerabilities that may make these channels attractive for illicit use, including the financing of terrorism. Alternative Remittance Systems and Terrorism Financing: Issues in Risk Management aims to help countries bring these informal alternative remittance systems into their counter-terrorism programs, without hindering the ability of those who depend on these systems to send and receive money at low cost.
Declaratio: Michael Servetus's Revelation of Jesus Christ the Son of God
In 1553 Michael Servetus, author of several notorious heretical works, escaped from the Inquisition in France only to fall into the hands of the Protestant authorities in Geneva. There he was tried, found guilty of heresy, and burned at the stake.Four hundred years later, in 1953, a mysterious manuscript entitled "Declarationis Jesu Christi Filii Dei Authore Michaele Serveto" (A Revelation of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, by Michael Servetus) was discovered in an archive in Stuttgart, Germany. Could this be a lost work by Servetus? In this book, Peter Hughes and Peter Zerner explain how, in the course of translating Declaratio, they discovered that it is the work of Matteo Gribaldi, a well-known Italian law professor, antitrinitarian, and admirer of Servetus. The book contains complete Latin and English texts of Declaratio and five shorter works by Gribaldi, including Apologia, his powerful and moving protest against the execution of Servetus.

The Computational Theory of Mind

The Computational Theory of Mind says that the mind is a computing system. It has a long history going back to the idea that thought is a kind of computation. Its modern incarnation relies on analogies with contemporary computing technology and the use of computational models. It comes in many versions, some more plausible than others. This Element supports the theory primarily by its contribution to solving the mind-body problem, its ability to explain mental phenomena, and the success of computational modelling and artificial intelligence. To be turned into an adequate theory, it needs to be made compatible with the tractability of cognition, the situatedness and dynamical aspects of the mind, the way the brain works, intentionality, and consciousness.

This Element presents and critically examines the relationship between metaphysics and the sciences. Section 1 provides a brief introduction. Section 2 looks at the methodological issues that arise when metaphysics and science get into contact, which is a much-debated aspect of the larger dispute concerning philosophical 'naturalism' and 'anti-naturalism'. A taxonomy of possible views is offered. Section 3 looks more specifically at milder forms of naturalism about metaphysics, which attempt in various ways to make it 'continuous' with science while preserving some degree of autonomy for it. Section 4 adds some reflections on what might be regarded as the most pressing open problem when it comes to doing scientifically oriented metaphysics (but also when practising metaphysics or science in isolation): the problem concerning theory choice and the value of non-empirical factors in determining which explanation of certain phenomena should be preferred.

This Element examines the life and legacy of the sixteenth-century Ethiopian intellectual Täsfa ?eyon. It reconstructs his formative years in the Horn of Africa and his diasporic life in the Holy Land and Italian peninsula, where he emerged as a prominent intermediary figure at Santo Stefano degli Abissini, an Ethiopian monastery within the Vatican. He became a librarian, copyist, teacher, translator, author, and community leader, as well as a prominent advisor to European humanist scholars and Tridentine Church authorities concerned with the emerging field of philologia sacra as it pertained to Ethiopian Orthodox (täwa?edo) Christianity. The Element reconstructs his wide-ranging contacts with the Roman Curia and emerging orientalist academy, and then scrutinizes his editio princeps of the Ge'ez Gospels. A final section traces his modern influence, erasure, and rediscovery by later generations of European, Ethiopian, and Eritrean intellectuals.
