Die Ultramontanisierung brach mit der katholischen Aufklarung, versuchte den staatlichen Einfluss auf die Kirche zuruckzudrangen und band die katholische Kirche in Deutschland in nie dagewesenem Ausmass an den Heiligen Stuhl. Hier liegen die Ursprunge der theologischen, intellektuellen, sozialen und politischen Entwicklungen, die das Katholische Milieu bis weit in das 20. Jahrhundert hinein pragten. Am Beispiel Michele Viale Prelas, der von 1838 bis 1845 als Nuntius in Munchen diente, arbeitet die Studie die zentrale Rolle der papstliche Diplomatie im Prozess der Ultramontanisierung heraus.
