Norbert Wiener (1894-1964) is well known by the general public as the founder of Cybernetics, by mathematicians as one of the first north-American mathematicians who win international prestige — as the person who formalized Brownian motion, solved the Zaremba problem and was the author of two seminal papers devoted to Generalized Harmonic Analysis and Tauberian Theorems — and by engineers as the person who proposed much of the Fourier analysis used by them and contributed to the foundation of the statistical theory of communication — which includes the use of wave filter theory, information theory and prediction theory in control and communications as well as the automation of all types of electronic devices.Wiener's research, which was frequently motivated by physics, engineering, or biology, was a clever mixture of Fourier analysis and probability theory. His contributions to electronics through his work on filtering (that is, the separation of noise from a message), and the theory of prediction made him very valuable to electronics engineering. In addition, Wiener addressed many other topics, including the formalization of the Brownian motion, ergodic theory, wave filter theory, and information theory. Taking all these ingredients together, he ventured to create a new scientific paradigm: cybernetics. This book contains a detailed explanation of Wiener's life, his many colleagues, and the historical context in which he lived, as well as Wiener's work. It also contains a large appendix about 'Wiener, Shannon, and the rise of a Digital World'. The main focus of the book is on Wiener's work related to electrical and electronic engineering and the way he used his mathematics to create the main concepts and techniques of the statistical theory of communication. In particular, the author presents Wiener surrounded by the engineers that worked at MIT with whom he maintained strong contact. It was in this atmosphere that information theory arose, and Wiener was a main influence on the people who developed that theory.
Norbert M. Samuelson: Reasoned Faith
Norbert M. Samuelson is Harold and Jean Grossman Chair of Jewish Studies and Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Trained as an analytic philosopher, he went on to establish the Academy of Jewish Philosophy in 1980, which contributed greatly to the professionalization of Jewish philosophy in America. An ordained Reform rabbi, a constructive theologian, and a public intellectual, Samuelson has insisted that philosophy is the very heart of Judaism and that in order to survive in the 21st century Judaism must rethink itself in light of contemporary science. Through his scholarship and organizational work he has brought a Jewish voice to the dialogue of religion and science. Viewing Jewish philosophy as central to the understanding of the Jewish past, Samuelson has explicated the philosophical dimension of Judaism, from the Bible to the present.

Francis Norbert Blanchet and the Founding of the Oregon Missions
The purpose of this dissertation is to present the story of the Catholic Church in the Oregon territory from the foundation of the first missions in 1838 until the formal organization of the country into the ecclesiastical province of Oregon City, which was completed ten years later when the first provincial council was held at St. Paul, Oregon, in February 1848. The pioneer priests, Francis Norbert Blanchet and Modeste Demers, had been but a few months in the Pacific Northwest when they realized the advantages that might result to their work from the presence of a bishop in Oregon. They sent, in 1839, the first of a series of petitions to the bishop of Quebec, asking that steps be taken thus to assist them but it was not until 1842, when Father De Smet, the Jesuit missionary, added his pleadings to theirs, that the project was given serious consideration. The following year, after recommendations from Quebec and Baltimore, the Holy See established the vicariate apostolic of Oregon and appointed Father Blanchet, first vicar apostolic. Three years later, in 1846, due to representations which Blanchet made at Rome, the province of Oregon City was erected. The Holy See elevated Blanchet to the metropolitan see and named as his suffragans, his brother, Augustine Magloire Blanchet, Bishop of Walla Walla, and Modeste Demers, Bishop of Vancouver Island. Archbishop Blanchet returned to Oregon in 1847 and several months later convened the first provincial council, which studied and legislated for the needs of the new province. It is this period of early foundations and development which is discussed in these pages. -From the Preface Sister Letitia Mary Lyons (1904-2001) entered the Holy Names novitiate in 1928 at Marylhurst, OR, and pronounced vows in 1930. Her bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in history and sociology were from Marylhurst College, the University of Washington, and The Catholic University of America. She taught in Holy Names high schools in Oregon and Washington, and at Holy Names (later Fort Wright) College, where she served variously as housemother, dean of students, and professor. She later pioneered a workshop for religious education on human sexuality.

Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of the British writer Violet Paget (14 October 1856 - 13 February 1935). She is remembered today primarily for her supernatural fiction and her work on aesthetics. An early follower of Walter Pater, she wrote over a dozen volumes of essays on art, music, and travel.Violet Paget was born in France on 14 October 1856, at Ch teau St Leonard, Boulogne, to British expatriate parents, Henry Ferguson Paget and Matilda Lee-Hamilton (n e Abadam). Violet Paget was the half-sister of Eugene Jacob Lee-Hamilton (1845-1907) by her mother's first marriage, and from whose surname she adapted her own pseudonym. Although she primarily wrote for an English readership and made many visits to London, she spent the majority of her life on the continent, particularly in Italy Her longest residence was just outside Florence in the Palmerino villa from 1889 until her death at San Gervasio, with a brief interruption during World War I. Her library was left to the British Institute of Florence and can still be inspected by visitors. In Florence she knit lasting friendships with the painter Telemaco Signorini and the learned Mario Praz, and she encouraged his love of learning and English literature. An engaged feminist, she always dressed la gar onne. During the First World War, Lee adopted strong pacifist views, and was a member of the anti-militarist organisation, the Union of Democratic Control. She was also a lesbian, and had long-term passionate friendships with three women, Mary Robinson, Kit Anstruther-Thomson, and British author Amy Levy. She played the harpsichord and her appreciation of music animates her first major work, Studies of the Eighteenth Century in Italy (1880). In her preface to the second edition of 1907, she recalled her excitement as a girl when she came across a bundle of 18th-century music. She was so nervous that it wouldn't live up to her expectations that she escaped to the garden and listened rapturously through an open window as her mother worked out the music on the piano. Along with Pater and John Addington Symonds, she was considered an authority on the Italian Renaissance, and wrote two works that dealt with it explicitly, Euphorion (1884) and Renaissance Fancies and Studies (1895)Her short fiction explored the themes of haunting and possession. The most famous were collected in Hauntings (1890) and her story "Prince Alberic and the Snake Lady" (1895) was first printed in the notorious The Yellow Book. She was instrumental in the introduction of the German concept of 'Einf hlung', or 'empathy' into the study of aesthetics in the English-speaking world
