Jeanes Teachers: a View Into Black Education in the Jim Crow South
Between 1907 and 1957, 2,448 Jeanes teachers labored to support rural black schools in the era of legally sanctioned separate but unequal schools. These black women took their title from the one million dollar bequest Quaker philanthropist, Anna T. Jeanes, gave to Booker T. Washington. This book weaves together the fifty year history of the Jeanes Fund in 15 southern states and in Virginia, home of those most responsible for its conception and implementation. It is a sympathetic yet critical portrayal of the women and their white patrons. The role of Jeanes teachers and the women themselves changed over time. Once purveyors of handicrafts, they focused on improving academic instruction. Once models of community self-help, they sought greater status as professional educators. Still, they could never shirk their position as accommodators of Jim Crow. Jeanes teachers and their white supporters became irrelevant when racially separate schools became illegal.

A rescued beagle and his boy owner seek love and understanding for their troubled small town in this holiday companion to the Newbery Medal-winning Shiloh, from Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Christmas is coming and Marty and his rescued pup Shiloh are sure glad about that--for their town is sure low on love and understanding and they hope that the joy of the holiday will bring with it the generosity of spirit that's so lacking. It's been a year since Marty Preston rescued Shiloh from Judd Travers and his cruel ways, and since then, Marty and Shiloh have been inseparable. Anywhere Marty goes, the beagle's at his side, and Marty couldn't be happier about that. Even Judd has been working to improve his reputation. But just as townsfolk grow more accepting of Judd, a fire in the woods destroys many homes, including Judd's, and Judd's newly formed reputation. Doubt, blame, and anger spread faster than the flames--flames that are fanned by the new minister, who seems fonder of fire and brimstone than love and mercy. And why are his daughters so skittish around him? And what's happened to Judd's dogs? With Christmas right around the corner, Marty has a lot of questions, and how they're answered might just take a Christmas miracle. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's fourth book in the Newbery Award-winning Shiloh series--following Shiloh, Shiloh Season, and Saving Shiloh--is full of heart-thudding suspense, as well as comfort and joy.

A rescued beagle and his boy owner seek love and understanding for their troubled small town in this holiday companion to the Newbery Medal-winning Shiloh, from Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. Christmas is coming and Marty and his rescued pup Shiloh are sure glad about that--for their town is running low on love and understanding and they hope that the joy of the holiday will bring with it the generosity of spirit that's so lacking. Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's fourth book in the Newbery Award-winning Shiloh series--following Shiloh, Shiloh Season, and Saving Shiloh--"seamlessly interlaces themes of tolerance, compassion, and forgiveness... and] explores the interconnectedness of family members, communities, and the dogs they love" (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

In a breathtaking saga spanning the final three decades of the Great Migration - from the Jim Crow south in rural midcentury Mississippi through the transformative 1970s - a tenacious single mother and culinary genius builds an unprecedented empire. But the one dream she can't stop chasing may cost her everything... Readers of Terry McMillan, Dolen Perkins-Valdez, ReShonda Tate, and Sadeqa Johnson will be captivated by this powerful story of mothers and daughters, against-all-odds success, generational trauma, and redefining home. Money is security. Always. Margo Dupree has lived by that rule since childhood, when her father's death plunged her and her mother into poverty. Marriage brought only disillusionment and struggle. But it also gave Margo the determination to migrate north in search of a better life for herself and her young daughter, Lana. The north, however, isn't the panacea she expected, and Margo finds herself contending with the all-too-familiar obstacles of racism and prejudice, not to mention the new stresses of urban living. But things change once she realizes that what was once her greatest shame is now her greatest asset--the skills she learned from her mother's job as a cook. Using her tasty recipes, personality, and relentless hustle, Margo begins to build a successful restaurant chain. Yet despite her ever-more desperate efforts, she can't earn her heart's deepest desire: Lana's forgiveness for her early absence. As Lana becomes a beautiful young woman with an increasingly mercenary temperament, Margo wonders if she knows her daughter at all--and if she can save her from the bitter and frighteningly dangerous mistakes that may shatter both of their worlds . . .

"There's a lot to be said for dairy farming, I keep telling myself. Actually, dairying wouldn't be bad at all if it weren't for cows. Now, no one should infer from this that I don't like cows. I do. I really do, especially with onions, mushrooms, and gravy." So begins this collection of hilarious memoirs from Phyllis Tenney Mudgett, who once sent a letter to the governor of Vermont, offering her body to be stuffed, mounted, and displayed beside "The Last Vermont Panther" in the Vermont History Museum, as a specimen of a rapidly disappearing species: a native born Vermont farmwife. She grew up on a tiny farm in the hills of Vermont surrounded with brothers, male cousins, and rowdy neighbor boys. She held her own. This book covers a part of her eventful life. As she explains, "I don't get up in the morning thinking, 'What outrageous thing can I do today' Things happen and I cope. Honest."
