Psichopath by Randall Garret, Science Fiction, Fantasy
One way to hide an ex-officio agency of the United States Government was to label it truthfully -- The Society For Mystical And Metaphysical Research. In spite of the fact that the label was literally true, it sounded so crackpot that no one but a crackpot would bother to look into it. As a consequence, better than ninety per cent of the membership of the Society was composed of just such people. Only a few members of the "core" knew the organization's true function and purpose.A classic Randall Garrett tale . . .
Randall Jarrell's Book of Stories: An Anthology
Storytelling as a fundamental human impulse, one that announces itself at the moment, hidden in infancy, that dreams begin--this is what the poet and critic Randall Jarrell set out to illuminate in this extraordinary book. Here Jarrell presents ballads, parables, anecdotes, and legends along with some of the finest work of Chekhov, Babel, Elizabeth Bowen, Isak Dinesen, Kafka, Peter Taylor, and Katherine Anne Porter. This wonderful anthology, with its celebrated introductory essay, enlarges and deepens our perception of the storyteller's art and its central place in the world of our feelings. This is the third book in a collector's series on Randall Made Knives, by Robert Hunt. These publications reflect the author's interest in the historical role that knives have played and he has documented their use during the wars of the 20th Century. This volume introduces the rare, unique and experimental knives of W.D. Randall, many either made or designed by him. The initial section explores knives from the Randall Museum, where over 50 images reflect the commitment to design innovation, which was and is still today, a hallmark of Randall Made Knives. The second section contains knives from a private collection, which was uncovered by the author. Interestingly enough, the knives in this grouping have roots in some of the "museum" examples and various designs can be found in Randall early "experiments" displayed in the museum cases

War on any scale was outlawed, along with boom-and-bust economic cycles, and prudery -- but no change was more startling than the face of New York, where the Empire State Building has become the Tower of Zeus In this altered world, William Forrester is an acolyte of Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, and therefore a teacher in this case of a totally altered history . . . but the fate that awaits him is a thing even more fantastic than the circumstances we've described

Author Bob Hunt's first book, Randall Fighting Knives in Wartime, provided him the opportunity for further study on this subject. It was apparent before publication of the first book, that the subject matter could not be exhausted. In his second book, Hunt continues the process of identifying, describing and dating fighting knives produced in the dramatic early days of the Randall experience. This new volume provides a vast amount of material, carefully organized and presented to enable the reader to further his own research in the areas most interesting to him.

Originally published in Britain, Randall is quite simply one of the shrewdest and most outrageous art-world novels in the English language. The eponymous artist at the book's center is a provocateur, a manipulator and a vandal-but also quite possibly a genius. Seen through the eyes of Vincent, his finance bro friend, admirer and rival in love, Randall is an artist for whom art is less an aesthetic challenge than a marketing problem, an act of aggression and a spoof (if also a consuming passion). Readers will be fascinated and appalled, but also faced with profound questions about art, commerce, and our debts to one another. As Vincent eventually discovers after his friend's death, there is a lot more to Randall than showmanship, and a lot more to his art than the funhouse mirror he holds up to the vanities around him. British reviewers raved. Now Americans can see what all the fuss was about."Writing about the visual arts is usually as risky as sharing needles . . . But Gibbs has produced the sort of novel you pray for as a reviewer."Tibor Fischer, The Guardian"An extremely funny satire of the dirty business of art curation, archiving, buying and selling . . . Slowly reveals itself as a moving account of friendship, love and loss . . . relayed in Gibbs' charming voice, rich in depth and confidence and as knowingly precise as the deftest of brush strokes."Lee Rourke, The New Humanist"Gibbs's novel is more than mischief: as with all the best lampoons, it dissects things that really matter and have gone awry - in this case the relegation of artistic innovation to banal shock value . . . The characterisation is disarmingly sympathetic and the prose fluid and inventive, right up to the final, playful revelation."Toby Lichtig, The Telegraph"Gibbs has worked a double shift, disguising a well-turned tale of family secrecy as an acerbic essay on recent cultural history without short-changing the demands of either." Anthony Cummins, The Observer"Long awaited and worth the wait." Geoff Dyer
