Who said the 400 best things about how to play baseball? From the wisdom of Mickey Mantle ("A team is where a boy can prove his courage on his own; a gang is where a coward goes to hide") to the wit of Nolan Ryan ("It helps if the hitter thinks you're a little crazy") to the banter of the Babe ("I swing big and I miss big"), this one-of-a-kind collection features the most quotable advice on how to play the game from the greatest names in baseball. Not your ordinary encyclopedia of baseball quotations, As Koufax Said . . . goes beyond the worn-out "Yogi-isms" and "Stengelese," beyond tales of players' drinking prowess and off-the-field blunders, right to the heart of the matter: How to play a winning game. We wanted a book that includes up-to-date information about evolution in Galápagos, yet is accessibleby professional biologists, laypeople, students, armchair travelers, and the merely curious. Namingthe endemic-and often curious-organisms in Galápagos from checklists can be rewarding; that's whyyou will find checklists of the islands' iconic species in this book (Chapter 12). But understanding whatyou see is a different adventure, and that is one thing that we hope distinguishes this book from others. In short, we wanted to write a book that would help you not lust identify what you see, but understandwhat you see. Such an understanding goes beyond identification guides and traditional natural historyand requires a context that includes the islands' biology, geology, climate, and history. In this book, you will find discussions (and checklists) of the native and endemic organisms you'llsee, especially the iconic ones such as penguins, land and marine iguanas, finches, giant tortoises, and albatrosses (see color images). However, we have not described all of the organisms on theislands-after all, there are more than 600 species of lichens and 2,9OO species of marine organisms, not to mention the more than 50 families, 300 genera, and 370 species of endemic and nativebeetles. Similarly, we discuss many, but not all, of the most troublesome introduced species (at lastcount, there were more than 1,400 such species). We have focused on the native and endemic "stars"of Galápagos that fill tourists' must-see lists.Although our book emphasizes evolution, we have also addressed several other topics, for evolutioncannot be understood without a corresponding understanding of its context: namely, the geology, climate, and historical impact of humans on the ecosystem. This is why you will find discussions of theislands' geology, weather, trails, and Visitor Sites in this book.We also wrote this book to emphasize the importance of preserving Galápagos, as well as to helpreaders understand the challenges facing the islands. To ensure accuracy and consistency, the information in this book was derived from visiting theislands more than 30 times over many years; talking with numerous Galápagos National Park Serviceguides, boat captains, boat crews, school teachers and other residents of Galápagos, and former prisonersat the Wall of Tears penal colony; documenting the GPS coordinates of more than 350 sites, usually with two independent GNPS units (Appendix 1); studying documents at a variety of libraries, research stations, and related locations such as GNPS, Charles Darwin Research Station, NationalGeospatial Intelligence Agency, and Instituto Oceanografico de la Armada; being on the bridge withboat captains in the most challenging conditions and regions of the islands (Appendix 2); and, whennecessary, hiking, scuba diving, and interviewing local residents to resolve controversies (e.g., theexact location of Jessica; see Chapter 11).

The Oxford Encyclopedia of Neuroendocrine and Autonomic Systems provides an up-to-date survey of the wide range of scholarship being conducted on these two systems in the field of neuroendocrinology. The Encyclopedia includes more than 50 articles--each approximately 8,000 words in length--that provide thorough overviews of a diverse set of topics in neuroendocrine regulation, neuroimmunology, behavioral neuroendocrinology, autonomic regulation, stress, thirst and water balance, regulation of food intake, and biological rhythms and sleep, among many others. All authors were commissioned specifically for the Encyclopedia, and all articles received blind peer reviews. The articles provide critical and synthetic examinations, as well as the history, progress, direction, and debates about research on a given topic, surveying developments and different perspectives, and discussing important contributors and contributions. The Encyclopedia offers coverage of core and emerging areas of research to provide readers a reliable source of specialist information on topics not discussed in existing reference works. The Delaware State Constitution is the first state constitution drafted by a convention composed of popularly elected representatives, and it is rich with history and tradition. The Delaware Bill of Rights has remained almost exactly the same since 1792, and it has enacted specific provisions whereby its three branches of government operate differently from the federal system. The Delaware State Constitution provides an outstanding constitutional and historical account of the state's basic governing charter. In it, Judge Randy Holland begins with an overview of Delaware's constitutional history. He then provides an in-depth, section-by-section analysis of the entire constitution, detailing important changes that have been made over the years. Justice Holland's learned treatment, along with the list of cases, index, and bibliography, makes this guide indispensable for students, scholars, and practitioners of Delaware's constitution. This second edition includes all amendments to the Delaware Constitution since 2002 and all significant court decisions interpreting any provision in the Delaware Constitution that have been issued since 2002. The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state's constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.

The Evolutionary Biology of Human Female Sexuality

The Evolutionary Biology of Human Female Sexuality

Randy Thornhill; Steven W Gangestad

Oxford University Press Inc
2008
sidottu
Research conducted over the last fifteen years has placed in question many of the traditional conclusions about the evolution of human female sexuality. Women have not lost estrus, as earlier researchers thought, but it is simply concealed, resulting in two functionally distinct sexualities with markedly different ends in each phase. At the fertile phase of the cycle, women prefer male traits that may mark superior genetic quality, and at infertile phases, they prefer men willing to invest resources in a mate. Thus, women's peri-ovulatory sexuality functions to obtain a sire of superior genetic quality, and is homologous with estrus in other vertebrates. This model sheds light on male human sexuality as well: men perceive and respond to women's estrus, including by increased mate guarding. Men's response is limited, compared to other vertebrate males, implying coevolutionary history of selection on females to conceal estrus from men and selection on men to detect it. Research indicates that women's concealed estrus is an adaptation to copulate conditionally with men other than the pair-bond partner. Women's sexual ornaments-the estrogen-facilitated features of face and body-are honest signals of individual quality pertaining to future reproductive value.
