Raymond Carver: Collected Stories (Loa #195): Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? / What We Talk about When We Talk about Love /Cathedral / Stories from
In collections such as Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? and What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, Raymond Carver wrote with unflinching exactness about men and women enduring lives on the knife-edge of poverty and other deprivations. Beneath his pared-down surfaces run disturbing, violent undercurrents. Suggestive rather than explicit, and seeming all the more powerful for what is left unsaid, Carver's stories were held up as exemplars of a new school in American fiction known as minimalism or "dirty realism," a movement whose wide influence continues to this day. Carver's stories were brilliant in their detachment and use of the oblique, ambiguous gesture, yet there were signs of a different sort of sensibility at work. In books such as Cathedral and the later tales included in the collected stories volume Where I'm Calling From, Carver revealed himself to be a more expansive writer than in the earlier published books, displaying Chekhovian sympathies toward his characters and relying less on elliptical effects. In gathering all of Carver's stories, including early sketches and posthumously discovered works, The Library of America's Collected Stories provides a comprehensive overview of Carver's career as we have come to know it: the promise of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? and the breakthrough of What We Talk About, on through the departures taken in Cathedral and the pathos of the late stories. But it also prompts a fresh consideration of Carver by presenting Beginners, an edition of the manuscript of What We Talk About When We Talk About Love that Carver submitted to Gordon Lish, his editor and a crucial influence on his development. Lish's editing was so extensive that at one point Carver wrote him an anguished letter asking him not to publish the book; now, for the first time, readers can read both the manuscript and published versions of the collection that established Carver as a major American writer. Offering a fascinating window into the complex, fraught relation between writer and editor, Beginners expands our sense of Carver and is essential reading for anyone who cares about his achievement. It was about eleven o'clock in the morning, mid October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills. I was wearing my powder-blue suit, with dark blue shirt, tie and display handkerchief, black brogues, black wool socks with dark blue clocks on them. I was neat, clean, shaved and sober, and I didn't care who knew it. I was everything the well-dressed private detective ought to be. I was calling on four million dollars. With these words, private eye Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler's great literary creation and one of the most enduringly popular characters in American fiction, first took life seventy-five years ago. Here, for the first time in a deluxe collector's box, are all seven Philip Marlowe novels--The Big Sleep; Farewell, My Lovely; The High Window; The Lady in the Lake; The Little Sister; The Long Goodbye; and Playback--along with thirteen classic pulp stories, Chandler's brilliant screenplay for Double Indemnity, and a selection of his revealing essays and letters: the most comprehensive edition of the hard-boiled crime fiction of Raymond Chandler ever published. Raymond Pace Alexander (1897-1974) was a prominent black attorney in Philadelphia and a distinguished member of the National Bar Association, the oldest and largest association of African American lawyers and judges. A contemporary of such nationally known black attorneys as Charles Hamilton Houston, William Hastie, and Thurgood Marshall, Alexander litigated civil rights cases and became well known in Philadelphia. Yet his legacy to the civil rights struggle has received little national recognition. As a New Negro lawyer during the 1930s, Alexander worked with left-wing organizations to desegregate an all-white elementary school in Berwin, Pennsylvania. After World War II, he became an anti-communist liberal and formed coalitions with like-minded whites. In the sixties, Alexander criticized Black Power rhetoric, but shared some philosophies with Black Power such as black political empowerment and studying black history. By the late sixties, he focused on economic justice by advocating a Marshall Plan for poor Americans and supporting affirmative action.Alexander was a major contributor to the northern civil rights struggle and was committed to improving the status of black lawyers. He was representative of a generation who created opportunities for African Americans but was later often ignored or castigated by younger leaders who did not support the tactics of the old guard's pioneers.

“All this must be either surfed or painted”: This is the underlying sentiment behind Raymond Pettibon’s iconic paintings of surfers and waves in this quintessential volume dedicated to the motif. Pettibon is known for his characteristically youthful aesthetic and sharply satirical critique of American culture. Though drenched in cynicism, his work empathizes with the dizzying madness of our own humanity as it engages both so-called high and low culture. Perhaps most poetic of the many motifs present in Pettibon’s oeuvre is the surfer. In 1985 Pettibon began Surfers––a series he continues to work on to this day––popular for its depiction of the lone surfer silently carving “a line of beauty,” along an impossibly large wave. This publication traces a selection of one hundred surfers from the series, from smaller monochromatic works on paper to colorful large-scale paintings applied directly to the wall. For Pettibon’s protagonist in these works—his countercultural hero—surfing exists apart from all else. Momentarily he achieves sublimity on the wave, distant yet synced with turbulent reality. We are forced to confront our own scale: small and feeble in the face of so much sublime power. Pettibon’s lyrical writings on these painted surfaces—both his own and taken from literature—reference his own philosophies and the confusions of reality—he critiques the hypocrisies and vanities of the world he engages. To help navigate, the renowned New Yorker writer and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life, William Finnegan, perfectly distills the transcendent nature and lack thereof in Pettibon’s work.

Discover Raymond Saunders’s dynamic paintings and his extraordinary legacy as an artist and thinker in his first monograph. Saunders’s work brings together his extensive formal training with his own observations and lived experience. His assemblage-style paintings frequently begin with a monochromatic black ground elaborated with white chalk—a pointed reversal of the traditional figure-ground relationship. He subsequently adds other markings and materials, such as wallpaper, advertisements, rulers, and paintbrushes. Expressionistic swaths of paint and line drawings tangle with found objects, signs, and doors collected from his physical surroundings at home and abroad, creating unexpected visual rhymes and resonances. At once deliberately constructed and improvisatory, didactic and deeply felt, these richly built surfaces conjure a range of themes, allowing for a nuanced multiplicity of meanings. Documenting a two-part exhibition at David Zwirner and Andrew Kreps Gallery in 2024, this publication features a conversation between curator Ebony Haynes and the Studio Museum of Harlem director Thelma Golden about Golden’s multidecade engagement with Saunders’s artwork and writing. A facsimile of Saunders’s self-published pamphlet from 1967, Black Is a Color—his vital essay on the creative expression of the artist—is reproduced alongside new commentary by the art historian Darby English. An essay by Jarrett Earnest offers an in-depth interpretation of two of Saunders’s complex chalkboard works. Also included are a previously unpublished interview from 1980 between the artist and Judith Wilson and a pivotal text from 1993 by the art historian Richard J. Powell that offers a panoramic examination of Saunders’s art from 1968 to 1993, with a special focus on his iconic painting Dr. Jesus.

Raymond F. O'Neill World War I Naval Aviator
This is a story of the experiences of a young man named Raymond F. O'Neill, born in 1896, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the outset of World War One. He had taken an interest in radios and radio technology at age 14, which had been invented only a few years before. In the Navy he trained as a radioman and was assigned to a submarine-spotting ship in the English Channel. When the Navy formed the Naval Air Corps, he volunteered for the new service. He spent the remainder of the war as a first-class radioman and nose-gunner in seaplanes that were used to spot German submarines when they surfaced and shoot holes in their exposed hull so they could not submerge. He then radioed their location to surface destroyers who came in for the kill.He survived three plane crashes and returned home at the end of the war where he started Boston Fire Extinguisher Company, hired a young, pretty secretary, Mary Croak, whom he soon married. They had a daughter and three sons. This remembrance of their father was recalled by his two youngest sons, John and James, and written and put together by Rayanne and Kelly, James' daughters.

He was an important transitional figure from the Azusa Street revival (1906 to 1908) to the post World War II healing revivals (1947 to 1958). He played a leading role in the expansion of Pentecostalism in America. Raymond T. Richey stands in the front rank of healing evangelists alongside F. F. Bosworth, Aimee McPherson, John G. Lake, Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, and William Branham among others. J. David Foxworth has studied the subject of revival for over forty years. He has visited many historic revival sites in the United States, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales for the purpose of research and prayer. He founded Lighthouse Christian Church in Montpelier, Vermont and served as senior pastor for fifteen years. In 2011 he earned a Ph.D. in Renewal Studies from Regent University. He served as Department Head of Biblical Studies for Charlotte Christian College and Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C. He is the author of Fire In The Great Mountains: A History of Evangelical Revival in Vermont in the Nineteenth Century (2021). He is married to Patricia (Patty) Foxworth for 32 years. They currently reside in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Raymond T. Richey: The Full Life of a Pioneer Healing Evangelist is his second published work.

Raymond T. Richey was an important figure in the history of the Pentecostal-charismatic renewal movement. He can be credited with being one of the first Pentecostal healing evangelists leaving a significant legacy for those who followed in his path, such as William Branham, Jack Coe, Oral Roberts, and Kathryn Kuhlman. He served as an important transitional figure from the Azusa Street revival to the post World War II healing revivals (1947 to 1958). When a youngster, an accidental injury to his eyes led to near blindness, but a miracle healing in 1911 fully restored his vision. He was also healed of TB. This shaped much of his remaining life and ministry. Richey spread his dual message of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ and physical healing in the atonement through relentless evangelistic crusades, publications, and radio broadcasts, financed through free-will offerings until the Great Depression curtailed his activities. He led soldiers to Christ during WWII as he campaigned with a large red, white, and blue tent. David Harrell (1975), the leading scholar of the post World War II healing revivals, draws a clear connection to Richey noting that he was one of the few revivalists in the early period who also had a major ministry in the post World War II revivals. Revivalists such as Richey helped bring Pentecostal theology and practice into mainstream Protestantism.
