Stories and Storyline

Stories and Storyline

The role of stories is widely recognised in language teaching. Stories engage the imagination and expose the reader/listener to language patterns and to a rich array of vocabulary in context. Storyline shares these features. In the Storyline approach a fictive world is created in the classroom. Learners work in small groups over a period of typically four to six weeks as characters in a story. Working on open key questions, which drive the story and which carry the curriculum content, learners use and develop their language skills within a meaningful context. And they have fun This book is about the power of story to engage and motivate, leading to effective learning: a programme of work based on stories and Storyline is truly learning-centred, allowing the teacher to adapt the level of the task to suit an individual learner's needs, enabling a sense of progress in the learner, enhanced motivation and continued learning. The book combines a wealth of practical ideas related to teaching with stories and Storyline, and at the same time also inspires teachers to undertake small scale explorations in their own classrooms. It is unique in its uncompromising attention to making links between everyday classroom practice, underlying theory and research opportunities that every teacher can take advantage of.

Rhyme over Reason

Rhyme over Reason

We are fascinated by what words sound like. This fascination also drives us to search for meaning in sound - thereby contradicting the principle of the arbitrariness of the linguistic sign. Phonesthemes, onomatopoeia or rhyming compounds all share the property of carrying meaning by virtue of what they sound like, simply because language users establish an association between form and meaning. By drawing on a wide array of examples, ranging from conventionalized words and expressions to brand names and slogans, this book offers a comprehensive account of the role that sound symbolism and rhyme/alliteration plays in English, and by doing so, advocates a more relaxed view of the category 'morpheme' that is able to incorporate less regular word-formation processes.

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date analysis of the complex conflict situation in Kashmir. Through an internal perspective, it charts the shift in the Kashmiri response towards the Centre and offers a detailed examination of the background in which separatist politics took roots in Kashmir, and the way it changed its nature in the militancy and post-militancy period. The volume shows how separatism and armed militancy, as manifest in the Valley in the late 1980s, (though augmented by external factors) have been internal responses to the changing nature of Kashmiri identity politics. It explores how the ideas central to Indian nationalist politics — especially democracy and secularism — echoed in Kashmir and were instrumental in dismantling the feudal structure and negotiating an autonomous space within the framework of asymmetrical federalism. Seamlessly blending facts and incisive analyses, this book raises new questions about the nature of conflict and contestation in the region. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of Indian politics, especially on Jammu and Kashmir, and sociology, as well as government bodies, think tanks and the interested general reader.

Touch Drunk is the debut collaborative collection of Australian and US poets, Brendan Bonsack and Reka Jellema. In the foreword, artist Angie LaPaglia writes, "From separate hemispheres they confront melancholy, pain, longing, loss, and love head-on, tenderly, and together. The resulting poems are so intimate that in reading them, it's easy to feel like you've stumbled upon a sacred place, a hidden cloister that you enter reverently, gingerly, as if you're not sure you should be here. You should."
