Building America's Hanger: the Design and Construction of the Steven F. Udvar-hazy Center
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center building at Washington's Dulles International Airport, the first phase of which opened in December 2003, represents the fulfillment of the Smithsonian Institution's long-held ambition to build a specialist facility to house the National Air & Space Museum's ever-growing collection of commercial aviation and space artifacts. As early as the mid-1960s proponents of the NASM were suggesting that the newly built Washington Dulles Airport could meet the needs of the Smithsonian as the ideal location for the display and conservation of its huge aircraft collections held at its store in Suitland Maryland. In the end the Downtown site on the National Mall won the day, and in July 1976 one of the most popular museums in the world opened it doors, leaving many aircraft behind at a 21-acre Maryland site. This copiously illustrated volume tells the story of the building of the new Hazy Center building. Beginning with the project's earliest conception and planning in 1993, when the US Congress approved $8 million for the design the "Dulles Extension", Lin Ezell celebrated author of Out of Harm's Way, Moving America's Lighthouse (2001) unfolds the story of the clearance of the site and the construction of the building designed by architects Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum. HOK remained true to the original concept a building that would meet the special needs of a large collection of air-and space craft, along with millions of visitors, but still fit the ambience of an airport. HOK's solution was a dramatic yet incredibly elegant building, featuring a massive vaulted space, reminiscent of the old zeppelin hangars, to house 200 aircraft a second "hangar" to house 135 space vehicles, together with specialist restoration facilities, research archives, an education center and Imax movie theatre some 760,000 square feet in all. Employing a lively and accessible mix of running text, special-feature sidebars and stunning large-format ground, installation and aerial photographs, as well as plans, photomontages, and detailed "action" shots, the author brings to life the details of engineering and construction processes such as the raising of the massive main hangar roof and explores the challenges and demands faced by the project team, of which she was a key member. AUTHOR: Lin Ezell was program manager for the National Air and Space Museum's (NASM) new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport. Prior to her appointment to lead the Dulles team, Ezell was assistant director for Collections Management at NASM and directed the activities of the Museum's Paul Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Maryland from 1986 until 1996. She worked as an historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 10 years, from 1974 to 1984. While at NASA, she co-authored histories of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and the Viking Mars landing program. At NASA Headquarters, she wrote two reference volumes in the Historical Data Book series. Ezell is a faculty member in the historic preservation certificate program at the Loudoun County campus of Northern Virginia Community College and author of Out of Harm's Way: Moving America's Lighthouse (2001). 175 colour & b/w illustrations

Ackoff's F/laws: The Cake

TRIARCHY PRESS

sidottu
This is the first full collection of all 122 of Russell Ackoff's f/laws - previously only available in two separate books from Triarchy Press (Management f-Laws and Systems Thinking for Curious Managers.) Each f/law in this full collection is accompanied by Ackoff's own witty and acerbic explanatory text and (in the printed edition) by his original drawings and cartoons. The collection reverts to Ackoff's original typescript without any commentary or other introduction. As Ackoff himself says: "Over time I have become aware of some very important truths about the practice of management. These truths, which I call the 'F/laws of Management', contradict assumptions that are commonly held by managers. These simple management truths are much more important than the fundamental, but complex, truths revealed by scientists, economists, politicians, or philosophers. The truths these wise thinkers reveal are at most frosting on the cake. The truths presented here are the cake." This definitive collection distils Ackoff's wisdom and a lifetime of experience about management, leadership, innovation, teamwork and organizations. It should be required reading for anyone who works in an organization.

BEFORE SCIENCE FICTION HAD A HOME The rise of SF (or sci-fi) as a genre was boosted by a new generation of SF-only pulp magazines from 1926 onwards. But science fiction was published (and popular) in the general run of fiction magazines which had their heyday before the 1930s. Literary gems of science fiction published in the general fiction magazines of the early 20th Century deserve a new audience. In this era, science fiction grew and matured with the input of such writers as Ray Cummings, Jack London, Edgar Rice Burroughs and A. Merritt. How would you track down the SF content of a magazine which also might contain adventure, romance, westerns, detective and mystery stories? You don't have to. Someone else already has, and the results are contained in this Checklist. Also included within is a generous showcase of magazine cover illustrations of SF stories, to give something of the flavour of the period. VINTAGE S.F. IN THE POPULAR MAGAZINES: A Checklist 1874-1936 is a must for the virtual bookshelf of any SF reader exploring the genre's early classics.
Today's Renewing F.A.I.T.H.: Finding Authenticity In Today's Happenings - A Resource For Living Well
TODAY's RENEWING F.A.I.T.H. focuses on keeping ones faith up-to-date. It is the fifth in a series of books written since 2002 that carry a common theme of Faith and Science that is necessary for living well today. The acronym of F.A.I.T.H., used in this book, emphasizes the importance of Finding Authenticity In Today's Happenings for creating one's life with the verifiable facts of science in this 21st century. Because change, diversity, and equality are core values in our universe, we need to constantly and consistently appreciate these values in order to make positive progress and move forward one day at a time. For most people the view of everything is from a Singularity, in the realm of science, or God, in the realm of faith, or both. This book appreciates this common unity between science and faith and shares a love and equal respect for both traditions. Such notable people in faith and science are the prophets, Jesus, Mystics, the desert fathers and mothers, with more modern notables like Buddha, Galileo, Einstein, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Today, more than ever, as our world grows smaller with more and more people coming into sharing community, we need renewing faith in love, compassion and grace to become interdependent as friends and neighbors. Sharing and searching together the truths of verifiable facts as we progress in this age of reason, we will find authenticity in today's happenings for living well together.
Student Workbook for Amsco's Marine Science* 3rd Edition by Thomas F. Greene: Relevant daily vocabulary and chapter assignments
This companion volume to Amsco's Marine Science: Marine Biology and Oceanography 3rd edition* is filled with vocab, activities and assignments that follow the Greene text page by page. Teachers can copy weekly packet assignments from it, or it can be used by students as a consumable. It can be used on short notice if there is a sub, or be assigned as homework. All the student needs is the textbook, physical or electronic. The rationale for having this workbook as a consumable is publishers now put much of their ancillary content online, leaving traditional pen & paper work lacking. Yet, many students still find it valuable to write and keep notes for themselves, and portfolios still matter. The activities in this new edition challenge students to apply the concepts, give examples, diagram chapters, and think things through with the author. For other titles in this series, find TTT on FB, or click the name at the top of this page, especially for AP courses and Social Studies. Coursepak B for the Greene text is available too, containing warm-ups, bell-ringers and multimedia activities.
