On the contrary, his astute observations of all the unrealised promises of salvation are equally empathetic and witty. Revealingly, he intensifies and delegates the grotesque tension between oppressive solitude, consumption, and amusement to the beholders, whose laughter gets stuck in their throats. Sebastian Acker: Traces of Other Places unites photos, film stills, and notes from an often surreal-looking journey undertaken by the Berlin-based artist Sebastian Acker (*1981) and his collaborator, Phil Thompson, through China’s copy-laden landscape, where not only have they erected sections of European cities, but also built a replica of an entire Austrian village. Simultaneously contemporary and anachronistic, the pictures in the book resist simple definitions of authenticity and imitation, not only by examining the theme of the reality experienced in the replicas, but also by shedding light on the tourism industry’s performative promotion of the European originals. The centre of the creative work and life of the Romanian-born artist is the old Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei (cotton-spinning mill), one of the most important artist centres in Germany of our time. Hosu’s pictures are distinguished by an expressive characteristic style, as if created in just one single breath. His dynamic, often flesh-coloured forms give rise to the suggestion of bodies and flow into a living natural environment. Whether luminous oil painting or charcoal drawings — Hosu’s pictorial works have a strong physical presence and take viewers along with them on a journey through space and time. Although it is one of the oldest techniques in photography, stereoscopy receives little attention in contemporary photography. Wrongly so, as the timeless works in this book show. For nine years now, Sebastian Cramer has been working on his project Two Views, which is presented in book form for the first time in this volume. Denn dort wird der Schuppenwurz bald auftauchen." Als die Fee das sagte, sah Sebastian, dass nirgendwo Blumen zu sehen waren. Das war ja auch kein Wunder, denn diese hatte der Schuppenwurz schon alle aufgefressen. "Da muss unbedingt etwas gegengetan werden," dachte Sebastian.
