Commemorating the centennial of his death, a beautiful glimpse of the life and work of Albert I (1848–1922), prince of MonacoAlbert I (1848–1922), prince of Monaco, was a learned prince, a navigator, and a humanist. His curious mind, driven by an ideal of peace and justice iconic of the Belle Époque, led him to travel the world from Monaco to the Azores, through Norway, Lisbon, and Paris. Based on archival letters, speeches, news articles, and photographs, Albert I of Monaco honors his life a hundred years after his death. His reign witnessed the rise of photography and he was an early adopter of the medium during the time the French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn launched into an ambitious photographical project called Archives of the Planet. The prince also had a close relationship to nature and the origins of life and had a strong interest in protecting biodiversity. He founded the Institute of Oceanography and the Institute for Human Paleontology and pursued a long list of other notable endeavors. Beautifully illustrated, Albert I of Monaco memorializes his life and work and the history of his era.

Two simple but profound questions have preoccupied scholars since the establishment of history education over a century ago: what is historical thinking, and how do educators go about teaching it? In Thinking Historically, Stéphane Ltévesque examines these questions, focusing on what it means to think critically about the past. As students engage in a new century already characterized by global instability, uncertainty, and rivalry over claims about the past, present, and future, this study revisits enduring questions and aims to offer new and relevant answers. Drawing on a rich collection of personal, national, and international studies in history education, Ltévesque offers a coherent and innovative way of looking at how historical expertise in the domain intersects with the 'pedagogy of history education.' Thinking Historically provides teacher educators, and all those working in the field of history education, ways of rethinking their practice by presenting some of the benchmarks, in terms of procedural concepts, of what students ought to learn and do to become more critical historical actors and citizens. As questions regarding history education compel educators with greater force than ever, this study explores different ways of approaching and engaging with the discipline in the twenty-first century.

Economic losses from natural disasters totaled $92 billion in 2015." Such statements, all too commonplace, assess the severity of disasters by no other measure than the damage inflicted on buildings, infrastructure, and agricultural production. But $1 in losses does not mean the same thing to a rich person that it does to a poor person; the gravity of a $92 billion loss depends on who experiences it. By focusing on aggregate losses—the traditional approach to disaster risk—we restrict our consideration to how disasters affect those wealthy enough to have assets to lose in the first place, and largely ignore the plight ofpoor people. This report moves beyond asset and production losses and shifts its attention to how natural disasters affect people’s well-being. Disasters are far greater threats to wellbeing than traditional estimates suggest. This approach provides a more nuanced view of natural disasters than usual reporting, and a perspective that takes fuller account of poor people’s vulnerabilities. As climate change magnifies natural hazards, and because protection infrastructure alone cannot eliminate risk, a more resilient population has never been more critical to breaking the cycle of disaster-induced poverty.
Infrastructure--electricity, telecommunications, roads, water, and sanitation--are central to people's lives. Without it, they cannot make a living, stay healthy, and maintain a good quality of life. Access to basic infrastructure is also a key driver of economic development. This report lays out a framework for understanding infrastructure resilience - the ability of infrastructure systems to function and meet users' needs during and after a natural hazard. It focuses on four infrastructure systems that are essential to economic activity and people's well-being: power systems, including the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity; water and sanitation--especially water utilities; transport systems--multiple modes such as road, rail, waterway, and airports, and multiple scales, including urban transit and rural access; and telecommunications, including telephone and Internet connections.

This report looks at the political economy of net zero policy, from common challenges to the development of strategies to overcome them. It shows how governments can improve political economy conditions over time with progressive climate governance interventions, while overcoming more immediate barriers with better policy design and communication.

Solve the DVA/FVA Overlap Issue and Effectively Manage Portfolio Credit RiskCounterparty Risk and Funding: A Tale of Two Puzzles explains how to study risk embedded in financial transactions between the bank and its counterparty. The authors provide an analytical basis for the quantitative methodology of dynamic valuation, mitigation, and hedging of bilateral counterparty risk on over-the-counter (OTC) derivative contracts under funding constraints. They explore credit, debt, funding, liquidity, and rating valuation adjustment (CVA, DVA, FVA, LVA, and RVA) as well as replacement cost (RC), wrong-way risk, multiple funding curves, and collateral. The first part of the book assesses today’s financial landscape, including the current multi-curve reality of financial markets. In mathematical but model-free terms, the second part describes all the basic elements of the pricing and hedging framework. Taking a more practical slant, the third part introduces a reduced-form modeling approach in which the risk of default of the two parties only shows up through their default intensities. The fourth part addresses counterparty risk on credit derivatives through dynamic copula models. In the fifth part, the authors present a credit migrations model that allows you to account for rating-dependent credit support annex (CSA) clauses. They also touch on nonlinear FVA computations in credit portfolio models. The final part covers classical tools from stochastic analysis and gives a brief introduction to the theory of Markov copulas. The credit crisis and ongoing European sovereign debt crisis have shown the importance of the proper assessment and management of counterparty risk. This book focuses on the interaction and possible overlap between DVA and FVA terms. It also explores the particularly challenging issue of counterparty risk in portfolio credit modeling. Primarily for researchers and graduate students in financial mathematics, the book is also suitable for financial quants, managers in banks, CVA desks, and members of supervisory bodies.
Without neglecting the fundamental theory, this book emphasizes the practical aspects of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). It discusses important topics such as choosing the most successful device for a given application and the problems usually encountered by novice users and ways to solve them. Additional topics include acquisition modes in GC-MS, quadrupolar analyzer performance, quantification by GC-MS, spectra databases for GC-MS, dissociation mechanisms, and mass spectra interpretation. The book supports theoretical demonstrations with numerous examples and figures to assist with reader assimilation.
