Avebury is a village in Wiltshire at the heart of the Marlborough Downs. In Avebury the prehistoric stone circle, together with the manor house, receive most of the attention. But what about the history of the ordinary people of the parish? Their story is just as interesting, but is rarely mentioned and little studied. This book sets out to tell their stories: the story of the local gentry and yeomen, the schoolmasters, the carpenters, the masons, the agricultural labourers, the poor. It paints a lively picture of Avebury in the early modern period - its government, its landowners and tenants, its agriculture, its occupations, its living conditions, its religion. It demonstrates that there is much more to Avebury than just its archaeology.
The book was written as reference material to aid in the study of the National Diploma in Beekeeping (NDB). This is why the backbone of the book is the NDB plant list. However, for the NDB there is an expectation that the candidate will demonstrate knowledge beyond that of the plant list. So there are additional plant families and individual species included to give the reader a more rounded knowledge of the subject. The book aims to bring knowledge of the plant families and their traits as well as in-depth information about the structure of the pollen of the important plants for honeybees. It is often said that we live in a violent world. Traumatic injuries are commonplace; every hospital, large or small, sees scores of such patients daily. Appropriate diagnosis and management of the trauma patient are necessary not only to save lives but also to minimize the morbidity which follows injury. It is not surprising, therefore, that several books covering various aspects of trauma diagnosis and treatment are published annually. They are, however, seldom redundant because of the continuing rapid evolution of knowledge relating to the diagnosis and management of the traumatized patient. This volume, restricted to the consideration of thoracic trauma, represents a comprehensive and authoritative study of chest injury. Dr. Groskin is exceptionally well qualified to discuss his subject, being Board Certified in Internal Medicine, in Pulmonary Diseases, and in Diagnostic Radiology. He has practiced and taught in these disciplines in several prestigious institutions. The author has used his multidisciplinary background to develop a book which is unique among others of its kind. The reader will quickly appreciate that it is unusual in its correlation of clinical information with radiological diagnosis. Unlike any other book on traumatology with which I am familiar, this volume discusses extensively the mechanisms of injury which make both clinical and radiological findings easier to understand and to remember. It also presents a meticulous approach to the diagnosis of the many forms of thoracic trauma in which all clinical and radiological diagnostic modalities are thoughtfully integrated.

The debate between the proponents of "classical" and "Bayesian" statistica} methods continues unabated. It is not the purpose of the text to resolve those issues but rather to demonstrate that within the realm of actuarial science there are a number of problems that are particularly suited for Bayesian analysis. This has been apparent to actuaries for a long time, but the lack of adequate computing power and appropriate algorithms had led to the use of various approximations. The two greatest advantages to the actuary of the Bayesian approach are that the method is independent of the model and that interval estimates are as easy to obtain as point estimates. The former attribute means that once one learns how to analyze one problem, the solution to similar, but more complex, problems will be no more difficult. The second one takes on added significance as the actuary of today is expected to provide evidence concerning the quality of any estimates. While the examples are all actuarial in nature, the methods discussed are applicable to any structured estimation problem. In particular, statisticians will recognize that the basic credibility problem has the same setting as the random effects model from analysis of variance.
