The Will to Improve

The Will to Improve

Tania Murray Li

Duke University Press
2007
pokkari
The Will to Improve is a remarkable account of development in action. Focusing on attempts to improve landscapes and livelihoods in Indonesia, Tania Murray Li carefully exposes the practices that enable experts to diagnose problems and devise interventions, and the agency of people whose conduct is targeted for reform. Deftly integrating theory, ethnography, and history, she illuminates the work of colonial officials and missionaries; specialists in agriculture, hygiene, and credit; and political activists with their own schemes for guiding villagers toward better ways of life. She examines donor-funded initiatives that seek to integrate conservation with development through the participation of communities, and a one-billion-dollar program designed by the World Bank to optimize the social capital of villagers, inculcate new habits of competition and choice, and remake society from the bottom up.Demonstrating that the “will to improve” has a long and troubled history, Li identifies enduring continuities from the colonial period to the present. She explores the tools experts have used to set the conditions for reform-tools that combine the reshaping of desires with applications of force. Attending in detail to the highlands of Sulawesi, she shows how a series of interventions entangled with one another and tracks their results, ranging from wealth to famine, from compliance to political mobilization, and from new solidarities to oppositional identities and violent attack. The Will to Improve is an engaging read-conceptually innovative, empirically rich, and alive with the actions and reflections of the targets of improvement, people with their own critical analyses of the problems that beset them.

Drawing on two decades of ethnographic research in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Tania Murray Li offers an intimate account of the emergence of capitalist relations among indigenous highlanders who privatized their common land to plant a boom crop, cacao. Spurred by the hope of ending their poverty and isolation, some prospered, while others lost their land and struggled to sustain their families. Yet the winners and losers in this transition were not strangers-they were kin and neighbors. Li's richly peopled account takes the reader into the highlanders' world, exploring the dilemmas they faced as sharp inequalities emerged among them. The book challenges complacent, modernization narratives promoted by development agencies that assume inefficient farmers who lose out in the shift to high-value export crops can find jobs elsewhere. Decades of uneven and often jobless growth in Indonesia meant that for newly landless highlanders, land's end was a dead end. The book also has implications for social movement activists, who seldom attend to instances where enclosure is initiated by farmers rather than coerced by the state or agribusiness corporations. Li's attention to the historical, cultural, and ecological dimensions of this conjuncture demonstrates the power of the ethnographic method and its relevance to theory and practice today.

Tania Bright knows life can be tough. 'I've had heart-breaking bereavements; made poor financial choices; lost confidence through redundancy; suffered relationship breakdown; failed in some ministry endeavours; grieved through two miscarriages; and regularly clock up significant social faux pas.' 'We might not be able to change what's happened,' she explains, 'but we can change our response. God wants to breathe goodness and kindness and love into every area of our life - particularly the areas we're the most frightened or ashamed of. I see failures, fears, flops, and fiascos as an opportunity to be kind to myself. I now live my life through 'kindsight', rather than mere hindsight. It informs how I interpret and accept the past, negotiate and enjoy the present, and stay optimistic for the future.'

With consummate skill, subtle and exacting artistry, and fierce passion, Tania Runyan's first collection, Simple Weight, brilliantly unveils the mysterious ties tethering heaven to earth and] explores the painful and troubling journeys of a soul in search of the divine.... Hers is a voice brimming with a palpable humanity and beautiful pathos--complex, wise, mutable, and wholly original.--Maurya Simon, author of The Raindrop's Gospel__________Spiritual without being in the least bit preachy, Runyan deals in matters of the heart, letting us experience the ineffable through a variety of subjects, often commonplace objects: a dead goldfish, a broken dishwasher, dust mites.... Runyan uses deeply infused language throughout: "I chew the name God, God like habitual / gum." God, "the holy / singularity." "God who buries // his miracles in the soil." These] poems have weight--emotional, spiritual, political--but are anything but simple.--Barbara Crooker, author of Radiance, Line Dance, and More__________Tania Runyan claims she does not concern herself with things too marvelous for her. Well, she's lying. Simple Weight ponders and illuminates cicadas emerging from the earth and martyrs merging their bones with dust. In Runyan's world--which is our world--the human intrudes upon the holy, making it more holy still. These poems, like the Psalms themselves, will fall through the years "like a muscle of water." Drink deeply. --Paul Willis, author of Rosing From the Dead: Poems

Tania Mouscardy-Johnson's book, When Apples aren't Enough, takes a hard look at the many changes implemented in education over the past two decades by examining the detrimental effects mandates, such as standardized testing and test-based teacher evaluation, have had on children and American public education. Shrouded as a children's book, Mouscardy-Johnson tells the story of Miss McCarthy, a teacher who is about to retire from her long journey as an educator as a result of the closing of her school. While she could possibly continue working as a sub in another building, Miss McCarthy sees the "writing on the wall" and believes that although she has loved teaching and has been enriched by her career, it is the time to step out of her role as teacher and to start working to save public education in America. Through the clever farewell visit of a former student, Chris, Miss McCarthy is able to "school" him about the hits education has taken from the policies implemented by the adoption of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top. Naturally, Chris is outraged and shocked, admitting that he, like the general public, never realized the devastating impact these policies and other mandates were having on public education. The book also explores the importance of tenure, unions, and supporting public education. Tania Mouscardy-Johnson's book is powerful in its message to teachers, parents, and students everywhere. The author remains positive and firmly believes that American public education will continue to "meet the needs of America's children". Ginger Calderaro- Valley Stream Teachers' Association "...what's currently happening in education is not about being the best teacher, or even a good one." "It's about politics and very wealthy people in this country who are trying to privatize public education so that they can become even richer." "It truly is a heartbreak for those of us who believe in public education-especially those of us who have dedicated our lives to making a difference in the lives of children." "...even as parents and concerned individuals are becoming aware of what has been happening to our educational system and even with their voicing their opposition- especially with regard to what it is doing to our children emotionally, the testing movement is still going ahead at full speed under the pretext of 'fixing' public education." "People are forgetting that throughout history, schools have played a vital role in our society. As a matter of fact, that's been a little bit of a double-edged sword for us. People look to schools as a venue to fix many social issues. Unfortunately, educators are not given the freedom nor the resources to do so, and IT'S THE CHILDREN WHO SUFFER " ABOUT THE AUTHOR... Tania Mouscardy-Johnson P.D. Educational Administration M.A. Secondary English Education B.S.
