Prior to its formation in 1849, Watauga County was a hunting ground for the Cherokee and part of the trail blazed by frontiersman Daniel Boone, for whom the county seat was later named. Primarily settled by whites after the Revolutionary War, many of the county s earliest families came to the Appalachians from the Piedmont region of North Carolina and, prior to that, from the North New England, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. These settlers were mainly of European extraction English, German, Scottish, Irish, Swiss, and Welsh along with a smaller African representation. Nestled in the panoramic Blue Ridge Mountains and unimagined by its early agrarian inhabitants, Watauga would become one of North Carolina s premier tourist destinations and home to Appalachian State University."
When the first settlers arrived in what is now Visalia in the fall of 1852, they found a lush river delta in the midst of an oak forest at the base of the Sierra Nevada. The soil was fertile, just right for farming, enabling Visalia to take root as the oldest town in the southern San Joaquin Valley. For the next 163 years, the town provided important products and services, like David Walker s Saddle Shop that became home to the famous Visalia Stock Saddle and Ben Maddox s Mount Whitney Power Company that harnessed water from the Kaweah River for electricity. Now with a population of almost 130,000, the county seat of Tulare County continues to be surrounded by some of the most productive farmland in the world and is a vibrant business center."

When we live as Christ would have us, then people who are seeking to fill that void will be drawn to us and will desire to have what we have. It is important to live our lives after the teachings and principles of God's word. Why? So that we can be void fillers or change makers.

Many false assumptions have been perpetuated through the years about the parentage of Etheldred Futrell, progenitor of the East Tennessee Futrells. The migration of the related John B. Walls family to Morgan County, Tennessee, has also been falsely portrayed. The author corrects these errors by presenting compelling evidence based on official records and DNA analysis. The history of the Futrell family in America is summarized, providing linkage back to Thomas Futrell, the first Futrell who came to America in 1679 as an indentured servant. The migration of John Martin, John B. Walls, and Etheldred Futrell from North Carolina to Knox County, Tennessee in the early 1800s, and then to Roane and Morgan Counties in the 1850s is documented. Finally, the first four generations of the Futrell family in East Tennessee are presented in detail supported by reference to official records and other reliable sources. A link to electronic records in the family tree is also provided.

Over a third of the gospels contain parables told by Jesus. He used the ordinary, everyday things to point to another order of reality-hidden, yet visible to those who had the eyes to see. This book dives into the practical application of the teachings of Christ and how they still can have an effect upon our lives today.

In the 1800s, Tulare County, California, was a hotbed of desperate characters whose deadly gunplay and murderous inclinations left a trail of bodies across the region. Although the Central Valley now makes its name in agriculture, Tulare County was once a bastion of the Wild West with a lineup of hardened criminals that has scarcely been equaled in the annals of crime. Train bandits, coldblooded murderers and callous outlaws armed with shotguns and butcher knives plagued Visalia, Porterville and other sleepy central California towns. Join historian and retired Visalia Police captain Terry Ommen as he relates the transgressions of Tulare County's roughest characters, including thrilling tales of the pistol-packing Mason-Henry Gang, a deadly duel between politically divided journalists and vigilante justice exacted by angry mobs.

The fourth president of the United States, James Madison, and his wife, Dolley, stamped their influence throughout Culpeper, Orange, Madison, and Rappahannock Counties with their plantation, Montpelier, and the enslaved men and women who supported them. One of those enslaved men, Paul Jennings, whose sons later became Union soldiers during the Civil War, penned his memoir in 1865. The legacy of slavery undergirds the region, and its ravages are undeniably on the faces of minority residents. The Civil War also has a footprint throughout the region; one example is the Battle of Cedar Mountain where, more than 85 years later, the first regional high school for minority children was built. Celebrants include World War I veteran Newman Nighten Gibson, of the 370th Infantry; Nannie Helen Burroughs, who founded a school for African American girls in Washington, DC; and Edna Lewis, who became a master chef in New York in her 30s and later was honored by the US Postal Service on a forever stamp.
