The Pugilist at Rest

The Pugilist at Rest

Thom Jones

Faber Faber

Thom Jones's magnificent collection of stories presents a brutal and authentic vision of the human condition, in a world without mercy or redemption. The Pugilist at Rest gives us an America of Vietnam vets and ex-boxers, of bitter lovers in trailer parks, of lives passing in brilliant epileptic flickers. These ferocious, semi-autobiographical stories form the debut collection by a distinctive and hugely talented writer. Thom Jones was discovered as a writer relatively late in life, in his forties, by the fiction editors at the New Yorker, who published many of Jones's stories from the early 1990s onwards. The title story of this collection went on to win the O. Henry Award for Best Short Story.

'Jones was a master of the short story [and] Night Train will be an amazing discovery for anyone who cares about literature.' Philipp Meyer, New York Times bestselling author of The SonA posthumous and definitive collection of new and selected stories by short-fiction icon and National Book Award finalist Thom Jones, with a stunning introduction by Amy BloomThom Jones's stories are high-octane, prose-drunk entertainment. His characters are grifters and drifters, rogues and ne'er-do-wells - some lovable, some not - but each with a voice that never fails to grab you by the collar. They include Vietnam soldiers, amateur boxers, psych ward veterans and an unforgettable adolescent DJ radio host, among others.Perfectly capturing the essence of this icon of the American short story, Night Train showcases the sheer breadth and power of his inimitable stories.'Bleakly and outrageously comic . . . Reading Thom Jones's fiction is like speeding in an open car: the landscape blurs, the momentum becomes intoxicating -- and then the brakes are applied, with no warning.' Joyce Carol Oates

With an illuminating new preface by Colm Tóibín, here is Thom Gunn's extraordinary memorial to love, life and death in the time of the AIDS crisisThe Man With Night Sweats, originally published in 1992, sees Thom Gunn writing at the height of his powers. The collection begins with poems that celebrate love and sex and bodies - whether the exuberance of a swimming otter, the nimble moves of a tow-headed skateboarder or the habituated coming together of two old lovers. In devastating contrast, the poems in the last section are unflinching portraits and accounts of the illness and deaths of friends during the AIDS epidemic. Written out of a lifetime's experience of perfecting his art, these poems are unsurpassed in elegiac intensity and among the most poignant responses to those terrible times.'Gunn has risen to his inescapable new subject with verse of quiddity, depth and terrible truthfulness.' Financial Times'Elegies as unblinking and heartfelt as anything he has written.' The Times

Juggling - From Antiquity to the Middle Ages

Juggling - From Antiquity to the Middle Ages

As with dance, so with juggling--the moment that the performer finishes the routine, their act ceases to exist beyond the memory of the audience. There is no permanent record of what transpired, so studying the ancient roots of juggling is fraught with difficulty. Using the records that do exist, juggling appears to have emerged around the world in cultures independent of one another in the ancient past. Paintings in Egypt from 2000 BCE show jugglers engaged in performance. Stories from the island nation of Tonga place juggling's creation with their goddess of the underworld--a figure who has guarded a cave since time immemorial. Juggling games and rituals are pervasive in isolated Inuit cultures in northern Canada and Greenland. Though the earliest representation of juggling is 4,000 years old, the practice is surely much older--in the same way that humans were doubtlessly singing and dancing long before the first bone flute was created. This book is an attempt to catalogue this tangible history of juggling in human culture. It is the story of juggling, represented in art and writing from around the world, across time. Although much has been written about modern jugglers-specific performers, their props, and their routines-little has been said about those who first developed the craft. As juggling enters a golden age in the internet era, Juggling: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages offers a look into the past--to the origins of our art form.

This slim collection of Ryng's poetry brings some of his strongest and most peculiar imagery together in one volume for the first time. It represents the ten years between 1996 and 2006 and includes "Tuesday", "Songs for Arcadia", and "A Voyage to Leonia". A tour de force of the Subminimalist imagination.
