Tome premier des oeuvres completes de Destutt de Tracy (1754-1836), ce volume comprend tout d'abord les textes que le fondateur et chef de file de l'Ideologie a publies alors qu'il etait depute a l'Assemblee constituante. Il y defend notamment, contre les attaques d'Edmund Burke, la cause de la Revolution francaise (M. de Tracy a M. Burke, 1790) puis, contre le parti colonial, celle des hommes de couleur (Opinion de M. de Tracy sur les affaires de Saint-Domingue, 1791). Un second ensemble reunit ses ecrits sur l'education des hommes faits (Quels sont les moyens de fonder la morale d'un peuple?, 1798) et sur l'instruction des jeunes gens (Observations sur le systeme actuel d'instruction publique, 1801). En prenant fait et cause pour la politique pedagogique du Directoire et en particulier pour les ecoles centrales des departements, menacees puis supprimees par le Consulat, Destutt de Tracy mene un combat qui n'est rien moins que philosophique: ce qui est en jeu en effet, c'est la presence ou l'absence de la grammaire generale et de l'Ideologie au coeur du systeme d'enseignement. A cote des ouvrages plus theoriques (Memoire sur la faculte de penser, 1798; Elements d'ideologie, 1801-1815); Commentaire sur L'Esprit des lois de Montesquieu, 1819), les textes ici rassembles temoignent de l'engagement du philosophe dans les debats de la decennie revolutionnaire.
