'Riveting, timely and truly revelatory. The Organisation Todt is the Nazi-era secret that still needs to emerge from the shadows' DAMIEN LEWIS, author of SAS Brothers in Arms and The Nazi Hunters'Charles Dick has done a major service to the history of the Third Reich. The Organisation Todt exploited camp prisoners and forced labourers as ruthlessly and murderously as the better-known SS, but its responsibility has never been properly explored' RICHARD OVERY, author of Blood and RuinsDiscover for the first time the story of the Organisation Todt, a hidden and brutal organisation overseen by Hitler at the heart of the Nazi machine.Adolf Hitler described the Organisation Todt as ‘the greatest construction organisation of all time’. It was from this organisation, headed by Albert Speer, that Hitler enlisted the nation’s leading engineers and architects to build his empire of dreams. In time, it became a key partner to the SS and the Wehrmacht and led to the deaths of millions. Unknown Enemy reveals the full extent of the OT and its long arm across Europe and the Reich. In wartime, its operations relied mainly on Germany’s slave labour system, the largest exploitation of foreign labour since the end of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Charles Dick takes us inside the OT’s vast building projects throughout German-occupied Europe, from the Arctic circle to the Balkans, to tell the story of how engineers and builders – so-called ‘ordinary men’ – perpetrated some of the gravest war crimes under its banner.Despite its extensive network, the Organisation Todt largely managed to slip under the radar of war prosecutors after Germany’s defeat. Drawing on extensive new research, first-person accounts and survivor testimony, Unknown Enemy finally unearths its dark story.

Unknown to history: a story of the captivity of Mary of Scotland By: Charlotte M. Yonge, illustrated By: W. (William John) Hennessy: Willi
Charlotte Mary Yonge (11 August 1823 - 24 May 1901) was an English novelist known for her huge output, now mostly out of print.Charlotte Mary Yonge was born in Otterbourne, Hampshire, England, on 11 August 1823 to William Yonge and Fanny Yonge, n e Bargus. She was educated at home by her father, studying Latin, Greek, French, Euclid and algebra. Her father's lessons could be harsh: He required a diligence and accuracy that were utterly alien to me. He thundered at me so that nobody could bear to hear it, and often reduced me to tears, but his approbation was so delightful that it was a delicious stimulus... I believe, in spite of all breezes over my innate slovenliness, it would have broken our hearts to leave off working together. And we went on till I was some years past twenty. Yonge's devotion to her father was lifelong and her relationship with him seems to have been for her the standard for all other relationships, including marriage. His "approbation was throughout life my bliss; his anger my misery for the time." She was born into a religious family background, was devoted to the High Church, and much influenced by John Keble, Vicar of Hursley from 1835, a near neighbour and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement. Yonge is herself sometimes referred to as "the novelist of the Oxford Movement", as her novels frequently reflect the values and concerns of Anglo-Catholicism. She remained in Otterbourne all her life and for 71 years was a teacher in the village Sunday school. In 1868 a new parish was formed to the south of Yonge's home village of Otterbourne; the parish was to contain the villages of Eastley and Barton. Yonge donated 500 towards the parish church and was asked to choose which of the two villages the parish should be named after. She chose Eastley, but decided that it should be spelt 'Eastleigh' as she perceived this as being more modern. Yonge died in her hometown of Otterbourne on 24 May 1901. Her obituary in The Times said: 9] Her friends, and especially her poorer neighbours, knew both the strength and the winning charm of her character. Thus the late Archbishop Benson noted in his diary her odd majesty and kindliness, which are very strong. But it is of course as a writer that Miss Yonge will be remembered. She had an inventive mind and a ready pen, and a bare list of the books written or edited by her would probably occupy nearly a whole column of The Times. She wrote chiefly for young people, especially young girls, and her books are the result not only of a strong ethical purpose, but also of her firm devotion to the High Church view of Christian doctrine and practice.

For several years whenever the author came across a new word while reading, he would note it his journal and look up the meaning. Some of these words were familiar but their true meaning not fully understood. Some were totally new. This book is a review of some of those words. Some are included with definitions, some with Wikipedia explanations. I expect many will not be new to every reader but he hopes some will be. The author also included quotes from various sources, mostly books, which also made it into his journals. In addition to these, he added some verse. It is subtitled A Bathroom Book for obvious reasons.

""Our subject is the lost sayings of our Lord, or--to give them their Greek name--the ""the agrapha,"" which means literally the ""unwritten sayings,"" saying which are not recorded in the four Gospels. As a matter of fact, we possess a not inconsiderable number of sayings which have come down to us outside the canonical Gospels, a fact of great importance not only for the study of the Gospels themselves, but also for the Church and its message . . . ""How does it come about, we immediately ask, that there are such things as sayings of Jesus outside the Gospels? Why were they left out of our Gospels? How did these two parallel streams of tradition arise, sayings in the Gospels and sayings outside them?"" --from chapter 1 Joachim Jeremias (1900-1979) was Professor of New Testament Studies at the University of Gottingen. His other works include 'The Parables of Jesus', 'The Eucharistic Words of Jesus', 'The Origins of Infant Baptism', 'The Servant of God' (written with Walther Zimmerli), and 'Jesus' Promise to the Nations'.
