v(D)J recombination: for the community of immunologists and developmental biologists, the molecular route by which B and T lymphocytes acquire their unique function of affording adaptive immunity. Yet, for many-from experienced scientists to trainees-it represents a (rather too) sophisticated process whose true insight is excessively demanding. However, when not simplyconsidered as a private ground for a few aficionados, it can be seen as a way of understanding how maturelympho cytes carry on their basic functions. For the group of aficionados-which includes this editor-it is an elegant paradigm featuring many fascinating evolutionary achievements of which the biological world alone has the secret. These include a subtle biochemical principle most likelyhijacked some 470 million years ago from an ancestral gene invader and since then cleverly adapted by jawed vertebrates to precisely cleave and rearrange their antigen receptor (Ig andTCR)loci. This invader would itself have assigned the services of the nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ) DNArepair machinery as well as various DNApolymerases or transferases to work in concert with developmental clues in lymphoid cell lineages to generate an immune repertoire and efficient host surveillance while avoiding autoimmunity. Recently, important new refinements in these systems have emerged, continuing to challenge ourknowledge andbeliefs. These arejust thetopics covered by the senior authors-all established leaders in this field-and their colleagues, whilst writing the various chapters in V(D)J Recombination.

This volume summarizes and synthesizes an aspect of research work that has been done in the area of Generalized Convexity over the past few decades. Specifically, the book focuses on V-invex functions in vector optimization that have grown out of the work of Jeyakumar and Mond in the 1990's. The authors integrate related research into the book and demonstrate the wide context from which the area has grown and continues to grow.

Originally published in 1945, V as in Victim was the first crime novel to feature ordinary cops as the main characters, launching the subgenre known as “police procedurals” and earning Lawrence Treat an important place in the history of mysteries.“So Mitch knew in general why he was a cop. ...But Jub Freeman was different, and the difference bothered Mitch.”New York City Police Detective Mitch Taylor doesn’t love being a cop, but it’s a decent, respectable job—except for the paperwork. He files his cases as “investigations,” not crimes, so that failure to solve them won’t jeopardize his promotion. Lab tech Jub Freeman never wanted to work for the police, but landing in the lab suited him well. When they’re called to the scene of a hit and run accident, Mitch is annoyed with the witnesses. None noted the license plate number of the car, but one insists that she heard a woman scream just before the accident.Interviewing the woman in her apartment overlooking the accident, Mitch and Jub are surprised to learn that her scream had nothing to do with the hit and run: she’s discovered her cat died, for no apparent reason. When her date doesn’t show up either, she grows worried and asks the police to check out his apartment at a nearby hotel. There, they find her friend bludgeoned to death. Are the cases related? With no brilliant amateur detectives in sight, can regular police solve these puzzles? Schooled in the ways that real law enforcement operates, Treat takes the readers along on a satisfying ride to justice.
