Skinhead History, Identity, and Culture

Kevin Borgeson; Robin Valeri

Skinheads go beyond the societal stereotype of hate mongers, bigots, and Neo-Nazis. The community of skins also includes traditional skins (those that adhere to the original philosophy of the British movement in 1969), Skinheads Against Racial prejudice (SHARPS), and gay skins, female skins and Neo-Nazi or Racist/Nationalist skins. Skinhead History, Identity, and Culture covers the history, identity, and culture of the skinhead movement in Europe and America, looking at the total culture of the skins through a cross-sectional analysis of skinheads in various countries.Authors Borgeson and Valeri provide original research data to cast new light into the skinhead community. Some of the data is ethnographic, drawing on face-to-face interviews with skins of all kinds, while other data is compiled from the Internet and social media about various skinhead groups within the United States, Europe, and Australia. The book covers the history of the subculture; explores the unique cultures of female, gay, and Neo-Nazi skins; and explores manifestations of the culture as represented on the Internet and in music. The work discusses how skinheads derive their values and morals and how they fit into the larger social structure.

This title was first published in 2000: Using micro-level data, this text shows that rural Russian households have made significant adaptations to an emerging market economy in just a few years. It focuses on how household capital (household labour, social networks and comunity attachment) effect the economic and psychological adaptation of households to rapid socioeconomic change. Findings are from 1995 to 1997 panel surveys made in three waves. The book deals systematically with micro-level processes of household adaptation to a market economy, institutional change and emerging informal and formal patterns of land tenure and use in Russia. It shows how structural changes are occurring in rural Russia and their impact on household enterprise development and income. Difference in household capital explains the emergence of inequality in the countryside and differences in the degree to which households experience stress and a higher or lower subjective quality of life.

In 1789, Horace Walpole defined serendipity as "making discoveries by accident"; it was through acceptance of this inherent chaos that some of history's most influential advances were made, such as Alfred Nobel and dynamite, Marie Curie and radium, and Alexander Fleming and penicillin. Usually chaotic-serendipitous observations are either not recognized by hypothesis-driven researchers or, if observed, rejected by them. Fortunately, the Naval Blood Research Laboratory (NBRL) has been able to embrace important chaotic and serendipitous observations that were critical to the productivity of the laboratory. As former director of the NBRL, C. Robert Valeri, MD, spent forty-five years exploring hematocrit, bleeding time, and nonsurgical blood loss, as well as other blood-related advances used to treat military and civilian personnel. In this volume, he reviews those advances and recalls his time at the NBRL.
