Learn to play the viola with popular pieces – lessons and sheet music for beginners Abracadabra Viola Beginner provides a lively and comprehensive introduction to the very first steps of playing the viola. Abracadabra Strings Beginners is a new series of string tutors designed to precede our existing Abracadabra books. All the titles in the series work in conjuction with each other, making them ideal for ensemble, group and whole class tuition. Used alone they remain perfect for individual lessons. This book contains activities, games and pieces that teach the fundamentals of playing the viola: good posture (with and without the instrument), bow hold, finger position and pitch awareness as well as developing rhythm and notation reading. The CD also aids pitch development with performances of the pieces and backing tracks to motivate pupils to practise pieces and activities outside of their lessons. The basics are constantly reinforced and revisited with the pupils building up to 'performance pieces' that combine and showcase all of the skills they have developed.

The Viola da Gamba Society Thematic Index of Music for Viols (ed. Gordon Dodd), 1980-92 (and continuing), is composer-based. The present volume initiates a companion project to catalogue manuscripts containing consort music. The editors are all highly experienced in the field and have newly examined all sources. Volume 1 features over 50 MSS whose copyists or owners are known: Bing, Hutton, Jenkins, Le Strange, Lilly, Merro, North. As well as a detailed inventory of every book (with anonymous work identified where possible), the descriptions include information on date, size, binding, paper, rastra, watermarks, collations, scripts, inscriptions and provenance, together with bibliographical references. Brief notes on the owners and copyists are provided. Of particular importance is the inclusion of facsimiles of all hands. Also included is a comprehensive study and illustration of watermarks by Robert Thompson (serving for the whole series). With some printed catalogues such as the British Library and Christ Church, Oxford, now nearly 100 years old, this new and comprehensive study will be an invaluable tool for future research.

The second edition is extensively expanded in its graded lists of studies and solos, in its encyclopedic catalog of viola literature in print, and (perhaps most important) in its treatment of the musical and pedagogical aspects of teaching the viola. A work already unique has been augmented in all its major aspects. The excerpts that follow are from reviews of the out-of-print first edition.
