Protest och profetia : Korpela-rörelsen

Protest och profetia : Korpela-rörelsen

Lennart Lundmark

Protest in Belgrade

Central European University Press

This text addresses one of the most important social movements of the 1990s - the civil and student peace demonstrations in Belgrade during the winter of 1996/97. The demonstrations, the largest ever in history, were in response to Milosevic's nullifying of the results of local elections in fourteen towns in Serbia and created global media attention and worldwide sympathy. This comprehensive study, on a society asking for democracy, is based on interviews with over 1000 civilians and students. It analyses the basic empirical findings of the research and examines specific sociological aspects such as class/intellectual composition, political/social values and rationales. A chronology of events is also included. The text comprises of ten chapters dealing with the various aspects of civil and student protests, the research being carried out and completed while the demonstrations were still in progress and before the outcome of events was known. The text provides valuable information for the analysts of post-socialist transformation as well as researchers of social movements and social change, and for all those concerned with the events in Southeast Europe.
Protest Movements as Media Vehicles of the Brazilian New Right
This book investigates right-wing populism in Brazil. It is a unique study of the major protest movements of the New Right that dominated the streets of São Paulo from 2014 to 2018 and acted as a prelude to Jair Bolsonaro’s election. Examining the populist rhetoric that circulated among the movements’ online followers, McLean reveals the formation of different right-wing publics and gives insight into the topics that have the greatest impact on public political debate. Through interviewing multiple activists and observing them at political events, McLean also exposes motivations for engaging in political action and demonstrates how the movements act as media vehicles of the New Right. Such an intimate study on the Brazilian New Right has never before been carried out in such in-depth detail.

With this book anyone can create protest graphics. The 46 die-cut stencils, plus a bespoke typeface, can be combined to create both slogans and powerful visual messages, and are robust enough to be re-used any number of times. There are classic symbols from the great protest movements of the twentieth century, as well as new images reflecting contemporary concerns – such as the environment and the economy. These are the building blocks of visual statement, and this book is the essential toolkit for the graphics of protest.
Protest, Parteien, Interventionsstaat: Organisierte Politik Und Demokratieprobleme Im Wandel

Protest, Property Rights, and the Law in British Columbia

Protest, Property Rights, and the Law in British Columbia

Benjamin Isitt

From strikes at Vancouver Island coal fields in the early twentieth century to recent confrontations involving assertions of Indigenous rights, British Columbia has a long history of clashes between protesters and established interests. Protest, Property Rights, and the Law in British Columbia investigates legal responses to those protests stretching back over more than a century. Benjamin Isitt draws on case studies that illuminate both continuity and change in the regulation of protest. Whether through remote anti-logging blockades at Fairy Creek or tent encampments in downtown Vancouver, activists assert customary rights to property by appropriating space. Property owners and managers in turn deploy an array of legal remedies to uphold private rights by restoring control over space, notably through the use of injunctions, enlisting lawyers, judges, police, parliaments, and soldiers. Protest, Property Rights, and the Law in British Columbia persuasively argues that the power of private interests in these judicial disputes has been undercut to a degree, raising questions of legal legitimacy and signalling a potential rebalancing of rights and interests.

Popular Protest and Ideals of Democracy in Late Renaissance Italy
Popular Protest and Ideals of Democracy in Late Renaissance Italy is the first study to analyse popular protest across the Italian peninsula and the Venetian colonies during the early modern period, 1494 to 1559. Drawing on over 100 contemporary chronicles and diaries, the fifty-eight volumes of Marin Sanudo's diplomatic dispatches, mercantile letters, and commentary, and 586 collective supplications scattered through archival sources from towns and villages in the Grand duchy of Milan, Samuel K. Cohn, Jr. places these incidents and their patterns in comparative perspectives, first with the late medieval heyday of popular revolt and then with regions north of the Alps. Cohn finds new developments during the early modern period such as an increase in women rebels, mutinies of soldiers, and new tactics of revolts such as shop closures, peaceful demonstrations of strength, and use of religious processions for discussions of tactics and strategies for obtaining logistic advantage. At the same time, these protests show convergences with the medieval Italian past, with leaders coming almost exclusively from the ranks of nonelites, religious ideology playing a surprisingly minor role, and the majority of revolts centring overwhelming in towns and cities. Finally, this study demonstrates that democracies do not just die under the duress of military occupation and growing powers of autocratic regimes. Ideals of representation and equality not only persisted; they could emerge in new forms and with greater sophistication.

Environmental Protest in Western Europe
The rise of environmentalism has been one of the more remarkable developments in the politics of western societies in recent decades. However, as environmental awareness has become more generalized, the forms of expression of environmental concern have changed. Established environmental movement organizations have become embedded in policy networks, but, in some countries, there has been a resurgence of environmental radicalism. New groups, adopting innovative tactics, have mounted spectacular and disruptive protests. These developments pose interesting questions for social scientists and policy-makers. Has the institutionalization of established environmental organizations demobilized their supporters and reduced them to a passive, credit-card waving 'conscience' constituency? Has direct participation in environmental protest become the specialized activity of smaller numbers of people? Has there been a decline in the total volume of environmental protest, or is it merely that the forms of protest have changed? Have the protest repertoires of established groups moderated over time, or have they been stimulated by the emergence of more radical groups to adopt more challenging tactics? Has environmental protest become more confrontational? Do protests employ different repertoires of action according to the issues at stake? How does the incidence of protest vary over time and from one country to another? Is there evidence of a Europeanization of either the issues or the forms of environmental protest? These are some of the questions this volume addresses. Based upon an analysis of the protest events reported in one quality newspaper in each of eight countries during a ten year period, this is the first systematically comparative study of environmental protest in a representative cross-section of EU member states. It breaks entirely new ground in the study of environmental politics in Europe and is a major contribution to the study of protest events.
