Adolf Loos (1870–1933) was a flamboyant character whose presence in the cultural hotbed of early 1900s Vienna galvanized the country’s architectural landscape. An early, impassioned advocate of modernism, he all-out rejected the grand Secessionist aesthetic prevalent at the time, as well as any hallmarks of the European fin de siècle.Instead, in lectures and essays, such as the milestone Ornament and Crime of 1908, Loos articulated his “passion for smooth and precious surfaces.” He advocated that architectural ornamentation was, by its nature, ephemeral—locked into current trends and styles, and therefore quickly dated. Loos, himself a Classicist at heart, argued instead for simple, timeless designs with time-honored aesthetic and structural qualities. In this essential introduction, we explore Loos’s writings, projects, and legacy, from his key concept of “spatial plan” architecture to his rejection of decorative fripperies in favor of opulent, fine-quality materials and crisp lines. Featured projects include Vienna’s Café Museum (1899), the fashion store Knize (1913), and the controversial Loos House (1912), which Emperor Franz Joseph I would refuse to travel past, bristling with rage at its insolently minimalist aesthetic.About the seriesBorn back in 1985, the Basic Art Series has evolved into the best-selling art book collection ever published. Born as the youngest of a poor Swiss farming family's seven children, Adolf Dietrich (1877-1957) supplemented arduous farm work and various jobs in a textile mill, as a woodcutter, and railway worker, with art. Gaining increasing recognition in Germany and Switzerland, his participation in the exhibition Les maitres populaires de la realite in Paris, Zurich, and New York in 1937-38 marked his breakthrough internationally. Until today, Dietrich's work is regarded by some as a prime example of 20th-century naive painting, while other scholars place him closer to the post-expressionist movement of New Objectivity. For the first time in nearly sixty years, Dietrich's work has been shown in a vast retrospective at Kunstmuseum Olten in Switzerland, in summer 2015 in which his pictures were accompanied by paintings of artists such as Cuno Amiet, Otto Dix, Giovanni Giacometti, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri Rousseau, or Felix Vallotton. This coinciding new monograph is richly illustrated in colour throughout, featuring some 160 works by Dietrich and the other artists. The essays contextualise his art and highlight Dietrichs' lasting significance.

History has always presented Hitler as a monster, a fierce dictator, responsible for the deaths of millions of soldiers and civilians during the Second World War. On the other hand, we have long been forced to believe in a false speech, namely, that Hirohito has no responsibility for the war crimes committed by the Japanese imperial forces between 1937 and 1945 in the Pacific. Our opinion on the matter is very different. In our eyes, Hitler was a sadistic criminal, one of the most bloodthirsty in human history. Hirohito, for his part, was a cunning and perverse monarch. Hidden in the shadows, he directed the actions of Japanese troops who occupied, during the Second World War, almost all of the territories in the Pacific and in the South east Asia. Classified as the two main figures who broke out the Second World War, along side Mussolini, Hitler and Hirohito remain in the eyes of several experts and historians as war criminals. This is the reason why I invented a fictitious trial against the two belligerents.

Boken består av to deler.
