Sharon Weston is an up-and-coming young advertising professional who has struggled through a broken relationship with her controlling mother, the breakup with a jealous, unfeeling boyfriend, who functioned as her mentor, and endured the challenges of mastering a new profession. She travels to bucolic Lancaster County, known as PA Dutch Country, to begin a business relationship with a new customer. She meets Michelle and not only finds a business relationship, but develops a warm friendship with her, and amazingly, with her PA Dutch family of Mennonites. What Sharon doesn't realize is that the pristine quiet countryside is home to a quiet religious society that is outwardly devout and dutiful, and inwardly stressed and struggling.Michelle Wenger is Sharon's new business contact and friend. She is from a fairly modern family of conservative Mennonites that own a paper products business. And, she is a lesbian in a church and society that has no tolerance for her situation. She has retreated into a solitary lifestyle and yearns for a close relationship to share life's experiences. Sadly, she has resigned herself to never finding the companionship she desires.Anna and Jacob Stolzfus are an Amish couple, the parents of little Waylon and Sadie, who farm and tend a market stand to make ends meet. While their church preaches separation from the world, they find that it's become increasingly difficult to not only thrive, but to even exist, without contact with the "English" outsiders. Anna, after having two difficult births of her two children, is forced by her church leaders to stop taking the birth control pills that a doctor prescribes to help her gynecological difficulties. The resulting pregnancy is miscarried and she comes close to death. During her ongoing struggle, husband Jacob is philandering with teenage Amish girls who are experiencing the thrill of illicit sex with a married man, while never considering the dire consequences that their church will mete out to them. The last straw comes when Jacob makes a clumsy, but failed, sexual attack on Sharon Weston when she stops to order some woodwork items from him.The Elders, a five man ruling group of senior Amish churchmen, take steps to control this young family and the illicit behaviors sweeping through their young people. In their cruelty they define Anna's near death experience from the cessation of prescribed drugs as "Gott's wille", or God's will, for her. They show her no sympathy. The Elders then begin to address the others, and Jacob is the prime candidate for correction. The story details what happens when innocent church members try to understand and improve their situation and how despotic leaders control and punish anyone they see as an "offender," often just because the member displays some level of independence. While church members bear the brunt of the horror and cruelty, outsiders, in this case Sharon and Michelle, are deeply affected and become inadvertently involved.

"THERE IS NO HOPE, AND THERE IS NO HONOR, FOR GOD DOES NOT EXIST, AND GHOST, HE IS A TRAITOR." He has wings growing from his back, and he is in captivity, deep in the caves of the terrorist-superhero Doomsman. And worse, the five superchildren sent by the Prophet to bust him out, are themselves captive. But a fell and terrible spirit awakes in Cherubim, and new powers rise within him, and he rouses the Prophet with winged words, rousting the old priest from his foolish policy of secret refuge and covert resistance to the government persecution of supers. Sooner or later, either he must make war, or they will smoke him out. Now the Prophet and the Doomsman must draw swords together, as the great War of the Prophet opens.

A thrilling story of scientific detective work and medical potential that illuminates the newly understood role of microglia--an elusive type of brain cell that is vitally relevant to our everyday lives. "The rarest of books: a combination of page-turning discovery and remarkably readable science journalism."--Mark Hyman, MD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY WIRED Until recently, microglia were thought to be helpful but rather boring: housekeeper cells in the brain. But a recent groundbreaking discovery has revealed that they connect our physical and mental health in surprising ways. When triggered--and anything that stirs up the immune system in the body can activate microglia, including chronic stressors, trauma, and viral infections--they can contribute to memory problems, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer's. Under the right circumstances, however, microglia can be coaxed back into being angelic healers, able to make brain repairs in ways that help alleviate symptoms and hold the promise to one day prevent disease. With the compassion born of her own experience, award-winning journalist Donna Jackson Nakazawa illuminates this newly understood science, following practitioners and patients on the front lines of treatments that help to "reboot" microglia. In at least one case, she witnesses a stunning recovery--and in others, significant relief from pressing symptoms, offering new hope to the tens of millions who suffer from mental, cognitive, and physical health issues. Hailed as a "riveting," "stunning," and "visionary," The Angel and the Assassin offers us a radically reconceived picture of human health and promises to change everything we thought we knew about how to heal ourselves.

Jesse 'Street Angel' Sanchez is the deadliest girl alive - a teenage homeless orphan skateboarder, fighting ninjas and trying to pass 7th grade! She likes food, hanging out with her friends, Bell (a robot girl), Lilith (Satan's daughter), and Emma (a zombie), saving the world, fighting, and food. Jesse “Street Angel” Sanchez takes the Ninja Kid to school! Her fists are the facts and his face is the report card! Don't miss this very special After School Kung Fu, er, uh...Special?Meanwhile, Saturday night's the big dance and Jesse doesn't want to go! Is love in the air? No.STREET ANGEL AFTER SCHOOL KUNG FU SPECIAL centers around Jessica "Street Angel" Sanchez, who is no stranger to battling forces that you think would be beyond her control. There's still the pesky matter of having a regular life, having to go to school and contend with friends that want her to go to an after school dance. They mean well, but there is another little matter of a showdown with the Ninja Kid to attend to after school that may change things. It's pretty clear that Van Buren Middle School is not ordinary school, but yet there is a very familiar feel to this story. I don't want to spoil any of the details, but you do get to see a couple of different sides to Jessica. After the fight happens (which isn't a spoiler, because it wouldn't be a Kung Fu Special without one), things kind of take a turn from there. What we end up with is something quite unexpected, and yet, should leave you smiling at the end.PRAISE FOR STREET ANGEL AFTER SCHOOL KUNG FU SPECIAL"Jesse Sanchez is my new favorite comic book character. Great middle school dialogue and the battle scenes will blow your mind!”-Jeff Smith (Bone, RASL, Tuki)"Jesse, a.k.a. Street Angel is a rare gem in the male-dominated world of comic book characters. When you finally find a comic book hero that is female, skateboards, and kicks ass, that's when you know young girls out there now have a strong super hero to follow. STREET ANGEL shows girls that they can be anything they want to be, including someone who saves the world and fights injustices, one bad guy at a time. She also defies female stereotypes right and left, and that is pretty darn cool."-Cindy Whitehead, founder of Girl is NOT a 4 Letter Word"STREET ANGELl remains as charming, inventive, and pitch-perfect as it was in the beginning. An indie-comics classic!"-Hope Larson (Compass South, Batgirl)“I thought I didn't like comics about kicking ass, but it turns out I REALLY like comics where the ass-kicker is a 7 year old girl. A+++ more ass-kicking please.”-Eleanor Davis (Libby's Dad, How to Be Happy)"With great style and flair, Rugg delivers another stellar story of the ever-sassy Jesse Sanchez a.k.a. Street Angel. Jam-packed with tween angst, humor, action, and fun, this book is a must-read for the rebel set."-Cecil Castellucci (Shade, the Changing Girl, The PLAIN Janes)“STREET ANGEL pulsates with danger!”-Wendi Freeman, Double Page Spread podcast
