PRAISE FOR Trading in the Zone "Ari Kiev takes us inside the most successful trading firms of our time and shows us how those firms seek to improve performance through disciplined self analysis and structured goal management. His application of psychiatric tools to the short-term trading aspects of behavioral finance can give readers a competitive edge."–Charles A. Leeds Jr., CFA, Managing Member, Hermit Capital Management, LLC "Kiev uses the powerful combination of his professional training as well as a unique vantage point inside the ropes at a market-moving, high-rolling hedge fund to deliver a fascinating analysis of a trader’s psyche. Although trading is widely acknowledged as an art, one that requires incredible innate intuition and feel for the markets, Kiev prescribes ‘getting into the zone’– a psychological state that one can create – for those aiming to achieve a higher level of performance. His anecdotes, case studies, interviews and tales of the ‘Master Trader’ are both instructive and tremendously insightful. A compelling read."–Ciaran T. O'Kelly, Head of Equity Trading, Salomon Smith Barney "Trading in the Zone discusses the psychological considerations that serve to distinguish the most successful traders and portfolio managers from the majority of traders who are doomed to failure. Trading is so greatly influenced by emotions and discipline that not to have Ari’s insight and advice is a serious mistake."–Tom DeMark, author of The New Science of Technical Analysis "I have been managing money for more than twenty years and I am happy to endorse Dr. Kiev’s principles, which have enhanced my performance and that of my traders over the past three years. Trading in the Zone will propel readers to the next level of trading success."–Jay Goldman, Hedge Fund Manager, J. Goldman & Co., L.P. "Ari Kiev’s Trading in the Zone clearly and forcefully illustrates the mental discipline that will enable a stock trader to improve his performance."–Allan R. Tessler, Chairman and CEO, Jnet Enterprises "Dr. Kiev works with professional traders, including some of the best traders in the country. In Trading in the Zone, he provides numerous case studies based on the market experiences of these traders, told both through narratives and their own words, in order to distill insights and lessons that should prove invaluable to professional and aspiring traders alike."–Jack Schwager, author of The Market Wizards and Stock Market Wizards

Praise for The PSYCHOLOGY of RISK "The Psychology of Risk is equally vital for everyone from the day trader to short-term online trader to long-term investor. A clear, enjoyable insight into what makes trading success." –Alpesh B. Patel, Financial Times columnist and author of Trading Online "Once again Dr. Kiev delivers a book that should be read cover to cover and kept as a reference. The Psychology of Risk explores the elements of risk taking as they relate to the human psyche." –John Floyd, Director, Proprietary Trading, Deutsche Bank AG "In 2000 and 2001, benchmark U.S. equity indices experienced the worst two-year performance since the bear market of 1973—74. Among the winners in this tumultuous market environment were those that invested with short time horizons rather than those that utilized a rigid buy-and-hold ‘one decision’ philosophy. Against this backdrop, Kiev, in his familiar pull-no-punches style, delivers an insightful, timely, and pragmatic thesis that focuses on the inner game of trading: psychology, discipline, and the holy grail–timing. A captivating read for those in search of a performance edge." –Ciaran T. O’Kelly, Head of Equity Trading, Salomon Smith Barney "Ari has proven himself to be a keen coach of world-class traders. The Psychology of Risk is a great read for those looking to better understand what it takes to put oneself at risk in the market." –Kevin Becker, CIO, Claiborne Capital Management, LP "Ari Kiev has done it again. One of Wall Street’s preeminent trading coaches, he explores some useful principles of risk taking which will help traders to take their game to the next level." Asymmetric Synthesis of Natural Products Ari Koskinen Department of Chemistry, University of Oulu, Finland Natural product synthesis has played a key role in the development of many synthetic methods and will continue to do so in the future. Many recent advances in such diverse fields as immunology, cellular biology and materials science have been achieved through the synthetic chemist’s ability to construct often very complicated structures in one enantiomeric form. This book introduces the student to this rapidly growing field of organic chemistry. The first three chapters present the foundations of asymmetric synthesis, with Chapter 3 describing, in concise but clear rationalizations, the reasons for the major asymmetric transformations. Chapters 4 to 10 cover individual classes of natural products; their structures, biosynthesis and interrelationships as well as examples of asymmetric syntheses and the practical value of these compounds.

Ari Seligmann

This book of two halves is at once a gallery of jaw-dropping modern Japanese buildings and an in-depth explanation of how the photographs of them were made. Japanese architecture fans are introduced in this book to the nine photographers who have been instrumental in shaping the way we view the country's spectacular post-war buildings. Through its pages we can 'visit' these astonishing structures through the eyes – and camera lenses – of these remarkable artists. But can documenting buildings in this way ever be entirely neutral? Author and Japanese architecture expert Ari Seligmann examines the post-Second World War evolution of architectural photography in Japan as a vehicle for considering both universal and particular issues in how we view the world around us through images. Through a veritable feast of exquisitely printed pictures, he grapples with the scope of architectural photography, recognising that it is more than making marketing images for architects and magazines, but not quite historical record. Combining photobook, biography, and architectural photo history, the book traces developments in one of the most exciting architectural contexts anywhere in the world. Japanese architecture is globally recognised through the circulation of architectural photographs, but Japanese architectural photographers have had almost no global recognition, until now. Profiled photographers: Yoshio Watanabe (1907-2000) • Chuji Hirayama (1909-2005) • Akio Kawasumi (1923-2007) • Osamu Murai (1928-2016) • Yukio Futagawa (1932-2013) • Tomio Ohashi (1932-2017) • Kiyoshi Takai (1938-) • Shuji Yamada (1939-) • Mistumasa Fujitsuka (1939-)

This study examines the culture of Yiddish radio in the United States during radio's golden age. Ari Y. Kelman explores the dynamic relationships between an immigrant population and a mass medium and between audience and community. By focusing on voices previously excluded from radio histories, this treatment of non-English-language radio breaks new ground in the study of both American mass media and immigrant culture. Yiddish radio directly addressed the everyday lives of Jewish immigrants, while providing them with invaluable guidance as they struggled to become American. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, radio created a virtual place where Jewish immigrants could listen to voices like theirs and affirm the sound of their community as it evolved, particularly in light of World War II and the years that followed.

In the generation after Constantine the Great elevated Christianity to a dominant position in the Roman Empire, his nephew, the Emperor Julian, sought to reinstate the old gods to their former place of prominence—in the face of intense opposition from the newly powerful Christian church. In early 363 c.e., while living in Syrian Antioch, Julian redoubled his efforts to hellenize the Roman Empire by turning to an unlikely source: the Jews. With a war against Persia on the horizon, Julian thought it crucial that all Romans propitiate the true gods and gain their favor through proper practice. To convince his people, he drew on Jews, whom he characterized as Judeans, using their scriptures, institutions, practices, and heroes sometimes as sources for his program and often as models to emulate. In The Specter of the Jews, Ari Finkelstein examines Julian’s writings and views on Jews as Judeans, a venerable group whose religious practices and values would help delegitimize Christianity and, surprisingly, shape a new imperial Hellenic pagan identity.

Scandal is the quintessential public event. Here is the first general and comprehensive analysis of this ubiquitous moral phenomenon. Taking up wide-ranging cases in society, politics, and art, Ari Adut shows when wrong-doings generate scandals and when they do not. He focuses on the emotional and cognitive experience of scandals and the relationships among those who are involved in or exposed to them. This perspective explains variations in the effects, frequency, elicited reactions, outcomes, and strategic uses of scandals. On Scandal offers provocative accounts of the Oscar Wilde, Watergate, and Lewinsky affairs. Adut also employs the lens of scandal to address puzzles and questions regarding public life. Why is American politics plagued by sex scandals? What is the cause of the rise in political scandals in Western democracies? Why were Victorians sometimes very accommodating and other times very intolerant of homosexuality? What is the social logic of hypocrisy?

This comprehensive volume on ergodic control for diffusions highlights intuition alongside technical arguments. A concise account of Markov process theory is followed by a complete development of the fundamental issues and formalisms in control of diffusions. This then leads to a comprehensive treatment of ergodic control, a problem that straddles stochastic control and the ergodic theory of Markov processes. The interplay between the probabilistic and ergodic-theoretic aspects of the problem, notably the asymptotics of empirical measures on one hand, and the analytic aspects leading to a characterization of optimality via the associated Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation on the other, is clearly revealed. The more abstract controlled martingale problem is also presented, in addition to many other related issues and models. Assuming only graduate-level probability and analysis, the authors develop the theory in a manner that makes it accessible to users in applied mathematics, engineering, finance and operations research.
