Understanding the Digital World

Understanding the Digital World

Brian W. Kernighan

Princeton University Press

A brand-new edition of the popular introductory textbook that explores how computer hardware, software, and networks workComputers are everywhere. Some are highly visible, in laptops, tablets, cell phones, and smart watches. But most are invisible, like those in appliances, cars, medical equipment, transportation systems, power grids, and weapons. We never see the myriad computers that quietly collect, share, and sometimes leak personal data about us. Governments and companies increasingly use computers to monitor what we do. Social networks and advertisers know more about us than we should be comfortable with. Criminals have all-too-easy access to our data. Do we truly understand the power of computers in our world? In this updated edition of Understanding the Digital World, Brian Kernighan explains how computer hardware, software, and networks work. Topics include how computers are built and how they compute; what programming is; how the Internet and web operate; and how all of these affect security, privacy, property, and other important social, political, and economic issues. Kernighan touches on fundamental ideas from computer science and some of the inherent limitations of computers, and new sections in the book explore Python programming, big data, machine learning, and much more. Numerous color illustrations, notes on sources for further exploration, and a glossary explaining technical terms and buzzwords are included.Understanding the Digital World is a must-read for readers of all backgrounds who want to know more about computers and communications.
Pastoral Inscriptions

Pastoral Inscriptions

Virgil's "Eclogues" represent the introduction of a new genre, pastoral, to Latin literature. Generic markers of pastoral in the "Eclogues" include not only the representation of the singing and speaking of shepherd characters, but also the learned density of the text itself. Here, Brian W. Breed examines the tension between representations of orality in Virgil's pastoral world and the intense textuality of his pastoral poetry. The book argues that separation between speakers and their language in the "Eclogues" is not merely pastoral preciosity. Rather, it shows how Virgil uses representations of orality as the point of comparison for measuring both the capacity and the limitations of the "Eclogues" as a written text that will be encountered by reading audiences. The importance of genre is considered both in terms of how pastoral might be defined for the particular literary-historical moment in which Virgil was writing and in light of the subsequent European pastoral tradition.

This book combines the accumulated knowledge of structural engineers, scientific researchers, mast and tower owners and antenna experts with experience in the analysis, design, construction and operation of communication structures, into one accessible volume. It introduces the reader to the basis of design, analysis and construction of lattice towers and guyed masts used for communication purposes (radio, television, mobile phones and radar) and looks at new developments and the effects on the industry. The author focuses on the light and wind sensitive structures that support the aerials that make communication services possible and states that the design and construction of these structures involves significant engineering expertise to ensure that they are safe and reliable, yet cost effective and efficient. A brief history of tall structures is provided and the various types of structure, dictated by their function and/or location are described. The loading on such structures is described and the methods of calculating their response outlined. Dynamic effects from vortex shedding or galloping are outlined, together with detailed guidance on how to minimise these effects and how to assess fatigue life. The book provides detailed information on: history, design considerations and failuresmeteorological parameters, wind resistance and strengthaerodynamic stability, fatigue, access and safetycodes of practice and design standards. Communication Structures is essential for both the established and the new generation of engineers, telecom administrators, contractors, masts and tower fabricators and related professionals.
The Political Education of Democratus

The Political Education of Democratus

Brian W. Dotts

Lexington Books

Thomas Paine described the American Revolution as educative. However, as examined in Brian W. Dotts’ The Political Education of Democratus: Negotiating Civic Virtue during the Early Republic, what was learned was neither standardized nor uniform. The Federalists, for example, viewed the revolution as a triumph for representative government, but one intended to maintain many remnants of the colonial experience. Anti-Federalists saw a confirmation of representative government at the state and local levels and considered the revolution as authenticating Montesquieu’s theories of republicanism. A third, more extreme interpretation of the revolution emerged from radical democrats who viewed the revolution as a fundamental break with mainstream thinking about republicanism. These radicals helped turn conventional understanding of representative government upside down, taking part in unconventional or extra-constitutional action during their negotiation of citizen virtue during the 1790s. Members of each of the societies took an active part in trying to fulfill their expectations for the new American experiment by contributing to the democratization of republicanism. The Political Education of Democratus illuminates the emergence of democratic thought from Aristotle and Machiavelli to more contemporary influences from the British Commonwealth tradition. Dotts examines how the radical ideas of Algernon Sidney, James Harrington, John Milton, Joseph Priestley, and Thomas Paine develop a rich tapestry among the democratic society’s correspondence, constitutions, resolutions, and early media. Individual members of the Democratic-Republican Societies, including Philip Freneau, Robert Coram, Benjamin Bache, George Logan, and others energized these radical interpretations of civic republican thought and plunged headlong into party politics, educating early Americans about the practical potentialities of democratic action.

This is the first complete English translation of Heidarviga Saga and the first English translation of it to appear in any form since the 19th century. The translation was made from the edition of Sigurour Nordal and Guoni Jonsson in Islenzk fornrit, Vol. 3, (Reykjavik, 1938). The book includes a foreword by James E. Anderson, as well as an introduction, and "Translators' Note." In addition, there are maps and an index of names. All of these give the reader a clear and accurate vision of Heidarviga Saga. In the foreword, Anderson warns against comparing this Icelandic saga with other saga masterpieces. He discusses the importance of its manuscript form and the possibility that the tale was appreciated as a story of triumphs and failures. The foreword is thorough in its argument for the merit of Heidarviga Saga. With a groundbreaking translation and informative supplements, such as the foreword, this work places Heidarviga Saga at a new height in the study of Icelandic literature.

Before Captain Cook's three voyages, to Europeans the globe was uncertain and dangerous; after, it was comprehensible and ordered. Written as a conceptual field guide to the voyages, Longitude and Empire offers a significant rereading of both the expeditions and modern political philosophy. More than any other work, printed accounts of the voyages marked the shift from early modern to modern ways of looking at the world. The globe was no longer divided between Europeans and savages but populated instead by an almost overwhelming variety of national identities.Cook's voyages took the fragmented and obscure global descriptions available at the time and consolidated them into a single, comprehensive textual vision. Locations became fixed on the map and the people, animals, plants, and artifacts associated with them were identified, collected, understood, and assimilated into a world order. This fascinating account offers a new understanding of Captain Cook's voyages and how they affected the European world view.

This book presents the first English translation of Half's Saga and a new translation of Hrolf's Saga, both classic Old Icelandic tales. Both belong to the mythical-heroic category of sagas, containing fantastical material and relying considerably on folklore motifs. They have at their base legendary, quasi-historical material which has served to anchor them more firmly in the Icelandic imagination throughout the 800 years or so of their existence. Will be of interest to the student of folklore and medieval Scandinavian literature.

From the end of the 19th century until World War II, questions concerning the ideal nature and current state of ""civilisation"" preoccupied the British public. In a work of both cultural and literary criticism, Shaffer explores this debate, showing how representative novels of five British modernists - Joseph Conrad, D.H, Lawrence, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf and Malcolm Lowry - address the same issues that engaged such social theorists as Herbert Spencer, Oswald Spengler, Clive Bell and Sigmund Freud. In examining the intersection of literary discourse and cultural rhetoric, Shaffer draws on the interpretative strategies of Mikhail Bakhtin, Terry Eagleton, Clifford Geertz and others. He demonstrates that such disparate fictions as ""Heart of Darkness"", ""The Secret Agent"", ""The Plumed Serpent"", ""Dubliners"", ""Ulysses"", ""Mrs. Dalloway"", ""To the Lighthouse"" and ""Under the Volcano"" all portray civilisation in the paradoxical image of blindness and insight, obfuscation and enlightenment - as a blinding torch that captivates the eye while it obscures vision.

Taiwan, the Republic of China, has been striving to reform its financial system, and in the process, become a financial power, both regionally within the Pacific Rim of Asia, and, globally, given the rapidly increasing economic and financial significance of this area. In a unique book written from an interdisciplinary and well-balanced legal, financial and economics perspective that is both theoretical and practical, Semkow comprehensively analyzes and discusses the scope and direction financial and capital market reform has taken in Taiwan, and its implications for existing and newly emerging financial institutions in Taiwan and elsewhere.Having introduced the problems underlying and the significance of Taiwanese financial reform, the author provides a thorough overview of the entire spectrum of existing and newly-emerging domestic and international financial institutions within Taiwan, and the various financial regulators, including the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of China, and the regulatory framework through which both financial institutions and regulators operate. The author examines in detail the various financial markets, including the financial, money, offshore banking, foreign exchange and securities (equity, debt and derivative) markets, and the major recent and imminent legislative and regulatory initiatives undertaken to reform these markets and elevate Taiwan's status as a regional, and by implication, a global financial center. This book will provide both foreign and Taiwanese financial, legal, business, and public policy and academic communities interested in Asian and Taiwanese business and finance an invaluable legal and financial guide to the rapidly emerging and increasing significance of Taiwanese banking and finance in this decade and into the next century.
