The Amazing Bud Powell

The Amazing Bud Powell

Guthrie P. Ramsey

University of California Press

Bud Powell was not only one of the greatest bebop pianists of all time, he stands as one of the twentieth century's most dynamic and fiercely adventurous musical minds. His expansive musicianship, riveting performances, and inventive compositions expanded the bebop idiom and pushed jazz musicians of all stripes to higher standards of performance. Yet Powell remains one of American music's most misunderstood figures, and the story of his exceptional talent is often overshadowed by his history of alcohol abuse, mental instability, and brutalization at the hands of white authorities. In this first extended study of the social significance of Powell's place in the American musical landscape, Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. shows how the pianist expanded his own artistic horizons and moved his chosen idiom into new realms. Illuminating and multi-layered, "The Amazing Bud Powell" centralizes Powell's contributions as it details the collision of two vibrant political economies: the discourses of art and the practice of blackness.

The Second Bud

Martha M. Ezzard

Martha M. Ezzard and her physician husband John are among the pioneers in the movement of professionals trading busy city careers for a return to the land. While this story about saving a family farm is distinctly Southern, it typifies the national locally grown movement which has begun to sweep the US.Locally grown foods call for wines that are a taste of the local earth—what wine aficionados call the terroir, the soils and climate that give them unique flavours not found in California or Burgundy or anywhere other than, in this case, Tiger Mountain. What follows initially are long sweaty days of post hole digging, trellis wire stringing, and weed pulling mixed with a few chiggers and ticks—but also the thrill of sighting a giant blue heron in the dawn mist of the farm pond—of hearing the honking of geese at sunset. There are times when the city high rise still beckons, but what Martha and John learn after burning smudge pots all night in a late April freeze only to see their pink buds turn brown despite it all, is that wine grapes have a second bud –and so too, because of their shared venture, does their relationship. The Second Bud is a story that reflects today’s agricultural evolution in the southeast, from tobacco, logging, and truck farming to agri-tourism, outdoor recreation, vineyards, and farm wineries. Filled with small town characters, unlikely obstacles and dirt based success, this memoir is a down home version of “Under a Tuscan Sun,” a couple’s risk taking to revive a fifth-generation family farm in the tiny North Georgia town of Tiger by cultivating fine wine grapes. It will appeal to romantics, wannabe winemakers, and all who covet the rural life.

The Tender Bud is the moving story of one woman's journey through breast cancer. The woman in question happens to be a senior psychiatrist of broad learning and deep clinical insight. Madeleine Meldin weathered the crisis of breast cancer without the support of an immediate family and in the context of ongoing professional burdens. This book is the journal that she wrote for herself as an aid to coping with the personal upheaval of diagnosis, mastectomy, and the aftermath of treatment. It was written while these events unfolded. With arresting candor, Meldin chronicles her emotions at each stage of her odyssey - the recurrent cycles of denial, anxiety, and despair; the conflicting feelings engendered by her physicians, surgeons, and the treatment "establishment" in general; her struggle between resignation and emergent hopefulness. Unique to Meldin's account is her ongoing juxtaposition of the different dimensions of "having cancer." Simply and gracefully, she chronicles the everyday dimension of cancer, with its obligation to proceed maturely and dispassionately with medical and surgical care, to meet one's professional responsibilities, to maintain the appearances that allow one to carry on with one's life. Meldin excels at showing how even the most mundane experiences of everyday life - conversations with friends and colleagues, the selection of clothes, a trip to the hairdresser - became saturated with her illness, with her sense of herself as a cancer patient.

Please note this is a 'British spelling' version. The story begins with a seed landing in a pretty garden where it begins to grow and eventually forms a little flower bud. But, the little flower bud becomes frightened of things that she `hears on the wind'; such as the sun that might scorch its petals, the rain that might spoil them, the wind that might blow them away - so the flower doesn't want to bloom. However, all flowers must bloom, and as the little flower bud opens her petals she overcomes her fears one by one. The more we think about our fears, the more they overwhelm us. This book teaches children (of all ages) that fear is just a feeling that holds them back from living their lives to the full. To add to the fun and develop observational skills there's a `Did You See' activity page at the back with objects from the book that children may not have noticed whilst reading it. There are also some simple questions that can be asked of children, encouraging them to think about what they've read. The skill level required is `easy'.

Zack and the Bud Stalk By B. Highman Zack's life was running on empty-just a down-on-his-luck handyman with a stash, a couple of odd jobs, and no real plan. Then a stranger hands him two mysterious, leopard-spotted seeds, and his stoner fantasy adventure begins. Expecting nothing more than some kind bud, Zack plants them in his kitchen. Overnight, roots tear through the floor, and a skyscraper-sized cannabis stalk blasts his entire house into the clouds. Suddenly, Zack, his girlfriend M.J., and his ride-or-die friend Han are trapped in a weed-themed world of high-flying danger. Up above, the rules are different. Greedy giants guard their treasure, bizarre inventions like the LongBongThromBombulator spark chaos, and a magical plant with a mind of its own threatens to pull them into an epic quest they never signed up for. Between twisted villains, adult fairy tale parody hijinks, and pothead adventure story mishaps, Zack's crew must figure out how to get home-before the stalk claims them for good. Packed with cannabis comedy, outrageous characters, and a hilarious modern Jack and the Beanstalk retelling, Zack and the Bud Stalk is a 420 fiction novel for anyone who loves humorous fantasy adventure, epic quests with weed, and trips that go way beyond the couch.

Born with cerebral palsy, Zach Cooley tells the story of his life with bits of historical information on the town of Austinville, Virginia intermingled throughout his work, which was also home to Hazel Stoots, his great-great aunt who served as the family matriarch despite having no children of her own, thanks to her undying sense of family. Hazel was also well-known as a worker for the local recreation center for more than 25 years, making her a popular citizen of the community. Later, to Zach, she was the center of his world. Her passing nearly led him down a destructive path. It would be years before he would find his purpose in life through a young woman named Emily, who would become the love of his life.
