Caleb Williams Or Things as They Are by William Godwin. Things as They Are; or The Adventures of Caleb Williams (often abbreviated to Caleb Williams) (1794) by William Godwin is a three-volume novel written as a call to end the abuse of power by what Godwin saw as a tyrannical government. Intended as a popularisation of the ideas presented in his 1793 treatise Political Justice Godwin uses Caleb Williams to show how legal and other institutions can and do destroy individuals, even when the people the justice system touches are innocent of any crime. This reality, in Godwin's mind, was therefore a description of "things as they are." The original manuscript included a preface that was removed from publication, because its content alarmed booksellers of the time. The reputation of WILLIAM GODWIN as a social philosopher, and the merits of his famous novel, "Caleb Williams," have been for more than a century the subject of extreme divergencies of judgment among critics. "The first systematic anarchist," as he is called by Professor Saintsbury, aroused bitter contention with his writings during his own lifetime, and his opponents have remained so prejudiced that even the staid bibliographer Allibone, in his "Dictionary of English Literature," a place where one would think the most flagitious author safe from animosity, speaks of Godwin's private life in terms that are little less than scurrilous. Over against this persistent acrimony may be put the fine eulogy of Mr. C. Kegan Paul, his biographer, to represent the favourable judgment of our own time, whilst I will venture to quote one remarkable passage that voices the opinions of many among Godwin's most eminent contemporaries.

The novel describes the downfall of Ferdinando Falkland, a British squire, and his attempts to ruin and destroy the life of Caleb Williams, a poor but ambitious young man that Falkland hires as his personal secretary. Caleb accidentally discovers a terrible secret in his master's past. Though Caleb promises to be bound to silence, Falkland, irrationally attached (in Godwin's view) to ideas of social status and inborn virtue, cannot bear that his servant should possibly have power over him, and sets out to use various means--unfair trials, imprisonment, pursuit, to make sure that the information of which Caleb is the bearer will never be revealed. Godwin described the book as "a series of adventures of flight and pursuit; the fugitive in perpetual apprehension of being overwhelmed with the worst calamities", so that Caleb Williams can be classified as an early thriller or mystery novel.

Caleb and Sam were married by Brigham Young and they now had a son and were living at their ranch. Brigham Young then called Caleb's father John on a mission. The mission was for the rest of his life. He was called to marry a divorced woman from Boston who had been abused by her past husband, and she has two children. ****** While at the ranch, Caleb receives a letter from Salt Lake City, Box B. Whoever gets a letter from Box B will be called on a mission. *****Here are short inserts from different chapters in the book. *****There were about forty Indians in the group. They came at a full gallop into camp and then came to a dead stop about two wagon lengths from the Elders, raising dust and showering them pebbles. Caleb noticed that some of the Indians were holding their rifles at the ready, while others had notched their bow strings with arrows. The Elders show no fear, and each one was praying fervently for divine protection. President Young had promised them safety from the Indians, and each Elder believed in his promise. *****By now there was a long line of old timers and it was only those who had gotten in on the betting and skinning, who could participate in the binding ceremony. Every man was reaching deep down to bring up their own personal binding agreement, and each man spit twice on his hand. There was one spit per agreement. One spit for their wager on Caleb's wrestling agreement at ten to one, and the other spit for Caleb's agreement with Preacher Jenkins, for use of his church for two Sabbaths. Caleb saw that some of the men combined one humongous chunk of tobacco juice on the palm of their hand, before they shook the preacher's hand.Every man eagerly stood in line. This was payback time for ol' Jenkins, because he had fleeced not only them, but many members of his congregation, with his giant wrestler. The small crowd of old men was building to a fevered pitch, and everyone wanted the wrestling match to get started. *****Preacher Jenkins's walked over to them and said, "I told ya I would run ya out of town, just like yer 'Marmons' in the past and I'm doing it again, but ya won't be tarred and feathered. This time my friends are gonna bury ya both alive," and he gave a sardonic laugh. The Elders dug a hole in the ground for the next hour. The leader told them to stop. He said, "Preacher Jenkins said since ya ar companions yer to sit next to each other and we'll put the dirt on top of ya, 'til we kin cover both of yer heads." Caleb was just about to make his move, when one man hit him from behind with the butt of his rifle, and it knocked him into the hole. The leader pushed Elder Orrin into the hole and told him to help Caleb sit up and he was told to sit next to him. Caleb moaned and came to. Elder Orrin said, "Elder, I hope this gets us the kingdom." Caleb said, "I don't know why Elder, but I still think everything will still work out." "Yea," replied Elder Orrin, "The only way we'll get out of this hole is when we're resurrected." Two of the men started filling the hole and shoved the dirt in and around the two elders. The dirt was up to their shoulders and the leader said, "Let's cover 'em up and git out of here. This place gives me the creeps." *****This book is clean and wholesome without foul language or sexual innuendos. It is for family reading and any age can read this book and enjoy its contents. Have a great read.

This is a story of a family who lived in the Arkansas wilderness in the 1850's. The father and son break up an Osage Indian attack on a helpless Wichita Tribe while the men are out hunting buffalo. Because the two white men stopped the attack, the Osage warriors retaliate and take revenge by attacking the settlers cabin, and the mother is killed. The father and his two children escape, and run for their lives as the Osage Warriors are in pursuit. ***** The father is John Morgan with his son Caleb, and beautiful daughter Samantha. ***** As Caleb started to mount, he heard the thundering of horse hoofs behind him. Turning, he saw the other Indian with his bow in hand and the arrow aimed directly at him. The warrior had a menacing grin of satisfaction, as he pointed the arrow directly at Caleb's chest. ***** "Now both of you just smile real nice and talk to them, and Samantha, let them know that you are their queen." Again, John reiterated, "Samantha, these mountain men respect a woman, and if they know you are married, they will respect you and your husband. But if they find out you aren't married, there are some men here who would kill Caleb and I, and take you for themselves." Samantha whispered, "Don't worry Pa, we'll try real hard to make it convincing." ***** The word was out, "There was going to be a wrestling match " and soon both whites and Indians were running to see the match. Within fifteen minutes, there were well over two hundred men gathered in a half circle. They gawked at the giant of a man. He had taken off his shirt and was flexing his rippling muscles. Everyone was watching to see if the young boy would get killed. They were yelling it was a match between 'David and Goliath.' ***** Caleb walked over and pointed to the wagon box, and said "This box is deeper than the other wagon boxes. He said, "I wonder...." Then he walked over to another wagon and found an ax, then came back to the first wagon and commenced to chop at the box. Soon the bottom gave way, and Caleb reached in. He pulled out a locked carved wooden box. There was no key, so he took his knife blade to pry open the box. As it gave way he found three leather pouches, one was quite large. Caleb handed Samantha the heaviest pouch and asked her to open it. She did so and was surprised to see it was filled with gold coins. The second smaller pouch contained numerous sparkling stones in an assortment of colors. The third pouch contained women's jewelry and a man's pocket watch. He searched the wagon for some identification, but could find nothing. He took the three pouches and put them in his saddle bag, and put the ax in one of the mule packs. Caleb looked around at the dead and said, "We don't dare bury any of these folks because if the Indians come back, they'll know that we've been here. Let's get out of here while we've still got our hair " ***** This book is clean and wholesome, for LDS, Christian and Family reading. A person can read this book at any age. My youngest reader is a boy 9 years old, and my oldest is a woman who is 103 years old. There are no swearing, or sexual innuendos and when you finish reading you will, want to have a better relationship with your family, neighbors and friends. Have a great read.

This book, a first attempt to survey and define the whole field of eugenics, appears in the year which finds us celebrating the centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the jubilee of the publication of The Origin of Species. It is a humble tribute to that immortal name, for it is based upon the idea of selection for parenthood as determining the nature, fate and worth of living races, which is Darwin's chief contribution to thought, and which finds in eugenics its supreme application. The book is also a tribute to the august pioneer who initiated the modern study of eugenics in the light of his cousin's principle. A few years ago I all but persuaded Mr. Galton himself to write a general introduction to eugenics, but he felt bound to withdraw from that undertaking, and has given us instead his Memories, which we could ill have spared. The present volume seeks to supply what is undoubtedly a real need at the present day-a general introduction to eugenics which is at least considered and responsible. I am indebted to more than one pair of searching and illustrious eyes, which I may not name, for reading the proofs of this volume. My best hopes for its utility are based upon this fact. If there be any other reason for hope it is that during the last six years I have not only written incessantly on eugenics, but have spoken upon various aspects of it some hundreds of times to audiences as various as one can well imagine-a mainly clerical assembly at Lambeth Palace with the Primate in the viii] Chair, drawing-rooms of title, working-class audiences from the Clyde to the Thames. It has been my rule to invite questions whenever it was possible. Such a discipline is invaluable. It gives new ideas and points of view, discovers the existing forms of prejudice, sharply corrects the tendency to partial statement. It is my hope that these many hours of cross-examination will be profitable to the present reader.
