From the authors of Beachside PD: The Reluctant Knight and Beachside PD: The Gypsy Hunter comes this thrilling prequel to the series: Beachside PD: Cities of Sand and Stone. It tells the story of Angelo Tedeschi, described by his closest friend Danny as ". . . a vicious thug certainly, a psychopath probably, and yet caring to those very few he loved." Angelo Tedeschi was forged by his father's fists, his mother's love, and shaped on the streets of Brooklyn. Tempered by his friendship with Danny Phillips and Jay Gardner, he survived to eventually work for mob boss Eddie "Mambo" Salerno. When Angelo loses his fiery temper and roughs up a high ranking Mafioso, Salerno has to hustle him out of town to keep him alive. Sent to Beachside, Florida to keep a close eye on degenerate gambler and crooked police captain Jimmy Hagen, he becomes-of all things-a cop. Watching Hagen isn't Angelo's only job, he's also responsible for looking after Salerno's criminal empire. A job complicated by Iraq war hero and fellow police officer, Michael Frakes, the steroid-fueled Joey Salerno and the vicious Russian crime boss, Viktor Matyushenko. From the stone city of Brooklyn to the sand city of Beachside, Angelo's story is one of constant betrayal. If you are a reader who prefers realism along with hard-hitting action and savvy dialogue, then you'll enjoy the third novel from this father/son writing team.

The English Language Institute at the University of Pittsburgh is known for its popular eight-volume series Words for Students of English (University of Michigan Press). In the years since the series was first published, faculty at Pitt ELI has been considering new ways to address learners’ challenges in acquiring vocabulary. The result of the research and experience is a new five-volume series, Academic Vocabulary Building in English. This series weaves together three sets of knowledge: (1) the results of recent research from applied linguists and psycholinguists, (2) the rich classroom experience of the Institute faculty, who together have many decades of practical classroom ESL experience, and (3) the data gathered from our online student database and corpus studies that have informed us of which words students need to know more deeply. Each unit contains sections that emphasize various components of word learning. First, each chapter opens with a chart of target words and their various morphological forms. The next step establishes form-meaning mappings: Each word is listed with a definition and two example sentences. The lists and definitions are followed by exercises that concentrate students’ attention on establishing form-meaning links. These exercises consist of practice opportunities that require multiple retrievals in order to promote label-to-concept links and begin awareness of derivational and inflectional variations. Follow-up exercises focus on collocations related to the unit’s theme. Each chapter closes with exercises that can be used as quizzes. By the time students have finished a unit, they should have had both receptive and productive practice with the form, meaning, morphosyntax, and collocational properties of each lexical item.

You can't kill the dead! Like any good monster, the zombie has proven to be ever-evolving, monumentally mutable, and open to seemingly endless imaginative interpretations: the thralls of voodoo sorcerers, George Romero's living dead, societal symbols, dancing thrillers, viral victims, reanimated ramblers, video gaming targets, post-apocalyptic permutations, shuffling sidekicks, literary mash-ups, the comedic, and, yes, even the romantic. Evidently, we have an enduring hunger for this infinite onslaught of the ever-hungry dead. Hoards of readers are now devouring zombie fiction faster than armies of the undead could chow down their brains. It's a sick job, but somebody had to do it: explore the innumerable necrotic nightmares of the latest, greatest, most fervent devotion in the history of humankind and ferret out the best of new millenial zombie stories: Zombies: The Recent Dead.

We aim to demystify whisky without taking away the magic. The history of whisky and production methods are clearly explained, and there is advice on how to nose, taste and savour, as well as a selection of classic whisky cocktails and advice on matching food and whisky. The book covers not just famous Highland malts, Irish pot still whiskeys and American bourbons, but also whiskies from Japan, Canada, Australia and India.

Lizards and snakes (squamate reptiles) are the most diverse vertebrate group in Australia, with approximately 1000 described species, representing about 10% of the global squamate diversity. Squamates are a vital part of the Australian ecosystem, but their conservation has been hindered by a lack of knowledge of their diversity, distribution, biology and key threats. The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 provides the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of Australian squamates in 25 years. Conservation assessments are provided for 986 species of Australian lizards and snakes (including sea snakes). Over the past 25 years there has been a substantial increase in the number of species and families recognised within Australia. There has also been an increase in the range and magnitude of threatening processes with the potential to impact squamates. This has resulted in an increase in the proportion of the Australian squamate fauna that is considered Threatened. Notably over this period, the first known extinction (post-European settlement) of an Australian reptile species occurred – an indication of the increasingly urgent need for better knowledge and management of this fauna. Six key recommendations are presented to improve the conservation management and plight of Australian squamates. This Action Plan represents an essential resource for research scientists, conservation biologists, conservation managers, environmental consultants, policy makers from Commonwealth and State/Territory governments, and the herpetological community. FEATURES First assessment of the conservation status of the Australian squamate fauna in 25 years. Complete assessment of the 986 Australian squamate reptile species recognised as at 2017. Analysis of the changes in conservation status of the squamate fauna over the past 25 years. Draft conservation assessments for the species described between the 2017 workshops and the 31st August 2018. Development of six key recommendations to improve the conservation management of Australian squamates.

The book is split into three parts: Part One contains an analysis of criminological theory; Part Two examines specific forms of criminality that are prevalent in South Africa; and Part Three evaluates criminal justice agencies and processes, as well as the position of victims in the criminal justice system. Genius. Anti-artist. Charlatan. Impostor! Since 1914 Marcel Duchamp has been called all of these. No artist of the 20th century has aroused more passion and controversy, nor exerted a greater influence on art, the very nature of which Duchamp challenged and redefined as concept rather than product by questioning its traditionally privileged optical nature. At the same time, he never ceased to be engaged, openly or secretly, in provocative activities and works that transformed traditional artmaking procedures. Written with the enthusiastic support of Duchamp’s widow, this is one of the most original and important books ever written on this enigmatic artist, and challenges received ideas, misunderstanding and misinformation. With 172 illustrations in colour

The first four months of a puppy's life are critical. The knowledge and patience that it is shown at the beginning determines how it will relate to and deal with the rest of the world as a mature dog. For instance, one big issue that must be addressed is the time at home when everybody is out at work. Puppies can suffer from separation anxiety complex. This can become very serious and affect the adult personality. This book proofs the puppy against this problem. And it explains what symptoms to watch out for in case of slippage. It is a comprehensive and insightful book that produces well-behaved dogs everybody can live with and love.

Writing and America surveys the writing genres that have contributed to the American notions of America . Essays from scholars from both side of the Atlantic chart the range of responses to American nationhood from colonial times to the present and include dissenting responses from communities such as native American, black and feminist writers. Case studies from writers such as James Fenimore Cooper and William Carlos Williams provide a framework for discussions on topics such as colonial notions of America as the promised land, the discourses of nationhood in the republic, the sense of nationhood in American historiography, and the formation of the American Canon. Draws upon extracts from the American Bills of Rights and the Constitution as examples of different types of writing.

In recent years, integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK. The Highways Agency standard now requires, where possible, that all new bridges with a length of less than sixty metres should be of integral form. In addition, it has been found that, due especially to the problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints, integral bridges are not only cost effective but also have a longer lifespan. Integral Bridges was commissioned by the Highways Agency to produce guidance for bridge designers by addressing the thermally induced soil/structure interaction problem created by environmental changes of temperature and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill to the bridge abutments. It develops a better theoretical understanding of the cyclic performance, in particular the strain racheting in the backfill soil when in contact with a stiff structure. It also identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence in the interaction problem, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict interactive soil behaviour, and identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem.

Raising My Rainbow is Lori Duron's frank, heartfelt, and brutally funny account of her and her family's adventures of distress and happiness raising a gender-creative son. Whereas her older son, Chase, is a Lego-loving, sports-playing boy's boy, Lori's younger son, C.J., would much rather twirl around in a pink sparkly tutu, with a Disney Princess in each hand while singing Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." C.J. is gender variant or gender nonconforming, whichever you prefer. Whatever the term, Lori has a boy who likes girl stuff--really likes girl stuff. He floats on the gender-variation spectrum from super-macho-masculine on the left all the way to super-girly-feminine on the right. He's not all pink and not all blue. He's a muddled mess or a rainbow creation. Lori and her family choose to see the rainbow. Written in Lori's uniquely witty and warm voice and launched by her incredibly popular blog of the same name, Raising My Rainbow is the unforgettable story of her wonderful family as they navigate the often challenging but never dull privilege of raising a slightly effeminate, possibly gay, totally fabulous son. Now with Extra Libris material, including a reader's guide and bonus content
