Shifting Sentiment is a study of the evolving editorial commentary of Ireland's nationalist provincial newspapers on the important political events in Ireland between the Home Rule crisis of 1914 and the Civil War of 1922-23. Its purpose is to determine the role of the press in reflecting and/or driving the rapid and radical changes in Irish nationalist public opinion within this period. What emerges is a fascinating insight into how the public feeling can be both reflected and influenced by the press, and the power the press has in shaping events themselves

The story of the gradual rise but ultimate demise of a soldier, colonial administrator and diplomat from an Irish background in the Victorian era of the British Empire. The book takes us through the life of Cornelius Alfred Moloney from his early days as a young army officer and then his career as he rose up the colonial diplomatic hierarchy to positions of seniority in West Africa and the Caribbean. As his life and career evolved, Moloney demonstrated a deep commitment to the countries and people he became responsible for and in his writings, showed this loyalty in promoting the local economies he represented. A growing appreciation and love of botany was central to his activities and the book lays out his relationship with the Botanic Gardens in Kew and how this helped him promote his botanical interests overseas, raising the botanical profile of the countries he worked in. Ultimately, a successful career ended in ignominy and an intriguing aspect of Moloney’s story is why things fell apart when they did, at a time he was at the height of his success. The book will be of interest to those keen on colonial history and the Irish contribution to empire with the twist of a person who became deeply drawn to merging the botanical and the economic interests of West Africa.

Founded in 1856 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley of Newark, Seton Hall University has played a large part in New Jersey and American Catholic life for nearly two centuries. From its modest beginnings as a small college and seminary to its present position as a major national university, it has always sought to provide “a home for the mind, the heart, and the spirit.” In this vivid and elegantly written history, Dermot Quinn examines how Seton Hall was able to develop as an institution while keeping faith with its founder’s vision. Looking at the men and women who made Seton Hall what it is today, he paints a compelling picture of a university that has enjoyed its share of triumphs but has also suffered tragedy and loss. He shows how it was established in an age of prejudice and transformed in the aftermath of war, while exploring how it negotiated between a distinctly Roman Catholic identity and a mission to include Americans of all faiths. Seton Hall University not only recounts the history of a great educational institution, it also shares the personal stories of the people who shaped it and were shaped by it: the presidents, the priests, the faculty, the staff, and of course, the students.

A writer all his life, upon retirement, Dermot Millar began spending more and more time writing and exploring his connection to poetry. His first volume of poems, "Unnatural Symmetry" is a result of that exploration: Sensitive poet soul pushed by fear of poverty shame / To live the compressed life of middle management bureaucrat / Who knows what comes out the other end of a life / Of such unnatural symmetry / How many are lost / In service to this existential choice. The poems in this collection are concise and take the listener to those self-same places of awareness. You will enjoy this journey.

John McGahern and the Art of Memory

John McGahern and the Art of Memory

In 2005, when John McGahern published his Memoir, he revealed for the first time in explicit detail the specific nature of the autobiographical dimension of his fiction, a dimension he had hitherto either denied or mystified. Taking Memoir as a paradigmatic work of memory, confession, and imaginative recovery, this book is a close reading of McGahern’s novels that discovers his narrative poiesis in both the fiction and the memoir to be a single, continuous, and coherent mythopoeic project concealed within the career of a novelist writing ostensibly in the realist tradition of modern Irish fiction. McGahern’s total body of work centres around the experiences of loss, memory, and imaginative recovery. To read his fiction as an art of memory is to recognize how he used story-telling to confront the extended grief and anger that blighted his early life and that shaped his sense of self and world. It is also to understand how he gradually, painfully and honestly wrote his way out of the darkness and despair of the early work into the luminous celebration of life and the world in his great last novel That They May Face the Rising Sun.
Text and Argumentation in English for Science and Technology
This work, which represents an integrated linguistic-argumentative approach, deals with the linguistic, argumentative and rhetorical analysis of English for Science and Technology (EST). The importance of this field for international communication has meant increased interest in the analysis of EST and above all in the analysis of the structure of EST texts. The work is divided into three parts. The first part analyses important cognitive and argumentative operations, especially with regard to their function in EST. It looks at the types, objectives, forms and structures of arguments and defines and explains central concepts such as common and specific topoi. Part Two deals with how these cognitive and argumentative operations are realised in language, in microstructures and macrostructures, and ends by analysing a complete EST text. The third part takes this article and shows how it could be used in university-level EST teaching.
