Noted as one of the ablest and exacting historians of his generation, this selection of historical essays by F. W. Maitland is designed to render more accessible those shorter writings of Maitland's which have the greatest intrinsic value for students of history. While best illustrating his distinctive qualities, it thus serves to stimulate a taste for his greater works. Except for Essay VII, Maitland's notes are given in full, with only slight corrections made necessary by the reclassification of historical records or the detection of some small error of fact.
Frank Ramsey was the greatest of the remarkable generation of Cambridge philosophers and logicians which included G. E. Moore, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Maynard Keynes. Before his tragically early death in 1930 at the age of twenty-six, he had done seminal work in mathematics and economics as well as in logic and philosophy. This volume, with a new and extensive introduction by D. H. Mellor, contains all Ramsey’s previously published writings on philosophy and the foundations of mathematics. The latter gives the definitive form and defence of the reduction of mathematics to logic undertaken in Russell and Whitehead’s Principia Mathematica; the former includes the most profound and original studies of universals, truth, meaning, probability, knowledge, law and causation, all of which are still constantly referred to, and still essential reading for all serious students of these subjects.
Since its publication in 1925, The Great Gatsby, F. This volume also includes a detailed account of the genesis, composition, and publication of the novel; a full textual apparatus; crucial early draft material; helpful glosses on the peculiar geography and chronology of the book; and explanatory notes on topical allusions and historical references that contemporary readers might otherwise miss. Fitzgerald’s great masterpiece is thus brought closer to a cross-section of readers, more accessibly and more authentically than ever before.
This first edition ever published of Trimalchio, an early and complete version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby now appears in paperback. Fitzgerald wrote the novel as Trimalchio and submitted it to Maxwell Perkins, his editor at Scribner’s, who had the novel set in type and the galleys sent to Fitzgerald in France. Fitzgerald then virtually rewrote the novel in galleys, producing the book we know as The Great Gatsby. This ur-version, Trimalchio, has never been published and is markedly different from The Great Gatsby: two chapters were completely rewritten for the published novel, and the rest of the book was heavily revised. Characterization is different, the narrative voice of Nick Carraway is altered and, most importantly, the revelation of Jay Gatsby’s past is handled in a wholly different way.
