How many times have you ever received unsolicited parenting and grandparenting advice only to realize that the person giving it didn't have a ton of experience dealing with serious issues? There are a lot of families where their kids are "pleasers" and they don't have many issues to deal with. While other families seem to struggle with each child. Based on the syndicated radio program with Keys for Kids Ministries, Parent Minute with Greg Yoder, Imperfect Parenting in an Imperfect World, is a daily devotional that offers real-world advice from one imperfect parent to another. It was borne out of the fact that Greg is a parent and grandparent who has dealt with a lot of stuff. It hasn't been easy. While he and his wife have had successes in parenting, they've also had a lot of heartache. They made some good decisions. They made some bad ones. And they learned from all of them. He shares both in this book. Parent Minute with Greg Yoder is a syndicated radio program, internet resource, and now a devotional book, coming from an imperfect parent talking to other imperfect parents in a very imperfect world. The most important thing is that he looks to God's Word for instruction, encouragement, and hope as we parent the kids in our lives. God never called us to be perfect parents, but he did call us to be faithful parents. It's impossible to do that perfectly. Even in that faithfulness, there are no guarantees in parenting. He hopes this book will encourage you each day by talking about issues facing families today. Some issues are common. Other issues are difficult and hard to talk about. Ultimately, though, we look to God for guidance, and rest on the fact that God is in control, yes, even in difficult parenting moments.

We arrived at a strange hour at Phnom Penh airport and used the Visa on Arrival option, where a raggedy man in a makeshift booth rubber stamped our Canadian passports after a short flight. It was late and my dad recalls trying to check into a hotel room that had only one bed, which I refused, after which we tuk tuked around in the middle of the night if I remember correctly trying to find a hotel. I remember the first hotel that I refused - dimly lit but squinting you would see grande architecture from another time, large open hallways and a minimal discreet panel of hotel staff that looked a bit off in trying to get hotel staff at least from a young Canadian perspective in my mind. That would have been in the late 90s, early 2000s. I didn't know my dad well yet but this is one of our memories. Early trips to China, and Hong Kong, really shaping things for me because I didn't have anything like that on my radar during my formative years. Subsequent trips by my dads or my own volition, always with my dad there on arrival sometimes briefly sometimes longer. The long memorable trip in the South of China with my dad there, and actually no memory of a camera as his guide, maybe one the only times. Guangzhuo, after being asked, i described as a boring random Chinese city, mainland, dirty at the time, not much going on. Upon sharing this story with others familiar with the place, discovered it had a blossoming night life scene among locals and settlers. Not to downplay the phone call from Jonathan, part of a family friend group that was really the backbone for a lot of this. Jonathan as the story goes arrived in Hong Kong and adapted to have almost perfect Mandarin Chinese. Began writing for major art world publications and eventually joined Art Basel as a sort of gatekeeper for new artists in that space.

In 1715 John Greg, a descendant of the McGregor clan, sailed from the family home in Ayrshire to seek his fortune in Ulster. He soon built a successful business as a merchant, his own sons becoming successful businessmen. Half a century later two of his grandsons, Thomas and Samuel, sailed back to Britain and founded businesses of their own at opposite ends of England, Thomas in banking and finance, Samuel in textiles. Helped by the patronage and finance of Robert Hyde, Samuel became a prominent figure in the development of the cloth industry. He helped to take the industry forward by investing heavily in the adoption of water power, and founded Quarry Bank Mill in north Cheshire, which today is open to visitors as a National Trust property. Meanwhile brother Thomas made a prudent entry into the marine insurance business, at a time when Britain's overseas trade was expanding at a prodigious rate. By the end of the 18th Century they had built up large fortunes. After a serious setback caused by the economic slump in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th Century, business recovered and by the time the brothers died in the 1830s they were both, in today's terms, multi-millionaires. Their descendants kept the family businesses running successfully for several decades and diversified into agriculture, literature and politics, but the 1860s recession saw the end of the great wealth the Gregs and their associates had built up.
