1888: Dr. John H. Watson, Army Corps surgeon turned colleague of the celebrated consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, decides not to assist in future cases as he is engaged to Mary Morstan. 1926: Mary Forrester discovers her mother's diary, covering the years 1889 to 1893 - her marriage to Watson. What occurred in those years? How was the quintessential male friendship of Holmes and Watson seen through a woman's eyes? How stable was a marriage where Watson was liable to abandon Mary at Holmes's summons? Who, ultimately, was Mary Morstan - a figure seldom referred to in Arthur Conan Doyle's sixty Holmes stories? This blend of fact and fiction sheds light on a virtually unexplored dimension of the Great Detective's exploits. It is a perspective Sherlock Holmes - who elevated "true, cold reason - above all things" - would probably not appreciate. But for all its warmth and irrationality, there is just as much truth in the heart.
"Listen to me, Jennifer! The fairies need your help." Jennifer likes fairies, but not reading, or writing, or telling the time, or finding her way on a map. This frank account of New Zealand Spitfire pilot Doug Brown traces his training and action experienced in the RAF and social activities during the war. From 'signing up' as a young 20 year old when World War II broke out in 1939, he ventured to Canada on the Awatea with 200 trainees and then on to England. The first solo in a Spitfire was almost his last and he crashed on his first operation with 485 Squadron. It was a life of contrasts: the thrill of flying; the loss of fellow airmen; anticipation of combat; the boredom of 'readiness'; indulgent mess banquets; rough conditions; pranks and comradeship; and the unrelenting toil of war. None would deny the effect the intensive active service would have on the mental and physical state of pilots and all servicemen. Boys quickly became men and survivors would claim they were the best years of their lives.

Camel remain one of the leading lights of 1970s progressive rock, selling to sell-out audiences across the globe, and still fronted by inspirational founder Andy Latimer. Formed in Guildford, Surrey in England in 1971, Camel , though not directly part of the genre, were strongly influenced by the bands emerging from Canterbury in Kent at the same time. In particular, the band's mixed humour and profundity, in a similar way to bands like Caravan and Hatfield and the North. However, and there's a clue in the name, and their music seamlessly integrated Middle Eastern and North African themes, forms and rhythms - as well as Jazz, folk and classical elements - to create an exciting and exotic new strand to the ballooning world of progressive rock in the early 1970s. After two critically well-received, but unsuccessful albums, Camel came to transatlantic attention in 1975 with the release of purely instrumental The Snow Goose, inspired by Paul Gallico's novella of the same name. The chart success of that album led to a sold-out performance in October 1975 at the Royal Albert Hall and cemented the band's place in the ongoing story of progressive rock. With Latimer still at the helm, and after almost 50 years and fourteen studio albums, Camel continue to perform to rapturous receptions across the world. This track by track analysis takes the reader along on their half-century journey, carving out a special, inimitable niche in British rock music.

Never Stop is the story of how Australian manager Ange Postecoglou took Celtic from the edge of despair to the UEFA Champions League, via a domestic double in his debut season. Postecoglou arrived in Glasgow with virtually no reputation on this side of the world, but through his compelling media appearances, enthralling style of football and winning habit, he soon became one of the most iconic Celtic managers since the legendary Jock Stein. Celtic were in crisis on and off the park in the summer of 2021, with numerous key players, including iconic captain Scott Brown, leaving the club after a season that had seen them finish 25 points behind Rangers. As Postecoglou arrived amid the chaos - and brought talent like Kyogo Furuhashi, Josip Juranovic and Jota with him - Celtic fans also returned to the stadium for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Postecoglou, his players and the support formed an unbreakable bond that would lead Celtic to the Premiership title and back to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League.
‘The best biography I’ve read recently’ – Colin Bateman, Sunday Independent'An excellent examination of Mayne… Ross corrects many of the myths about him that have flourished over the years' - History of War magazine‘This welcome reassessment, officially backed and well-researched, sets the record straight’ – Soldier Magazine‘Paddy’ Mayne was one of the most outstanding special forces leaders of the Second World War. Hamish Ross’s authoritative study follows Mayne from solicitor and rugby international to troop commander in the Commandos and then the SAS, whose leader he later became and whose annals he graced, winning the DSO and three bars, the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d’Honneur.Mayne’s achievements attracted attention, and after his early death legends emerged, based largely on anecdote and assertion. Hamish Ross’s closely researched biography challenges much of the received version, using contemporary sources, the official war diaries, the chronicle of 1 SAS, Mayne’s papers and diaries, and a number of extended interviews with key contemporaries.Ross’s analysis shows Mayne to be a dynamic, yet principled and thoughtful man, committed to the unit’s original concepts. He was far from flawless, but his leadership and tactical brilliance in the field secured the reputation of the SAS, proving he was every bit a rogue hero.

An important part of the built heritage of the Northern Highlands is Victorian and Edwardian. Andrew Maitland, two sons and a grandson, architects based in Tain, made significant contributions across the region - including farm buildings, churches, shooting lodges, hotels, courthouses, town halls, commercial buildings, villas and whisky distilleries, including Glenmorangie, where they played a pivotal role. Tain itself became a place of rare charm and beauty. Hamish Mackenzie has researched the people who commissioned the Maitlands and why they did so. He brings to life a fascinating variety of characters against a backdrop of social, religious, political and technological change.
From mean beginnings – ‘wretched accommodation, no comfortable houses, no soft beds’, visiting French knights complained in 1341 – the city of Edinburgh went on to become one of the architectural wonders of the world. But over the centuries many of its fine buildings have gone. Although invasion and civil strife played their part, some buildings simply collapsed of old age and neglect. Others were swept away in the ‘improvements’ of the nineteenth century; yet more fell in the developers’ swathe of destruction in the twentieth century as shifting patterns of social habits, industry, housing and road systems demanded change on a massive scale. Few buildings were immune as much of the Old Town’s medieval heritage was destroyed, Georgian squares attacked, Princes Street ruined, old tenements razed in huge slum clearances, and once familiar and much-loved landmarks disappeared. In this informative and stimulating book, Hamish Coghill sets out to trace many of Edinburgh’s lost buildings – from imposing city centre edifices to domestic dwellings – and to find out why they were doomed. Lavishly illustrated, Lost Edinburgh is a fascinating insight into a cityscape that has been constantly reinvented over the years, and which continues to develop in the most unexpected and dramatic ways in the twenty-first century.
