This second edition not only contains thorough revisions to reflect recent changes in the legal landscape following key court decisions and statutory developments in areas such as preemption, admissibility of expert testimony, the learned intermediary doctrine, and innovator liability, but also contains new analyses of issues such as personal jurisdiction, pre-litigation counselling, and the amended Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. This biography of Helen Keller tells the story of the controversial and turbulent relationship between Helen and her teacher, Annie Sullivan. It chronicles Helens doomed love affair, her struggles to earn a living, her triumphs at Radcliffe College and her work as an advocate for the disabled. Helen Keller has been venerated as a saint or damned as a fraud, this book shows her as a beautiful, intelligent, high-strung and passionate woman whose life was transformed not only by her disabilities but also by the people on whose help and friendship she relied.
This juxtaposition of Virginia Woolf and Christa Wolf, writers of two distinct cultures, countries and generations, focuses on the strategies the two authors share in creating their female characters. Hermann looks at each author within the social and historical conditions that produced them, employ
The intense struggle of political ideals that blazed through early-twentieth-century Europe reached its climax in Spain, where Spanish and foreign revolutionaries, liberals, and reactionaries found themselves caught in a ferocious civil war. For many intellectuals who fought and chronicled the conflict, the war became a political test case that either strengthened their political convictions and commitments or caused them to question their own and others' service to a particular cause. In Written in Red: The Communist Memoir in Spain, Gina Herrmann looks at the memoirs of six Spanish Communist writers to reveal the fascinating and often painful evolution of their politics from the beginning of the war through their long years of exile. While Spanish Communist authors initially shaped their identities and autobiographies along the lines of Soviet models, Herrmann shows how, with the recognition of Stalinism's betrayal of the Communist ideal, the writers increasingly came to experience those models as straitjackets unfit to contain the stories of their rich and difficult lives. The six writers studied here--Dolores Ibárruri, María Teresa Léon, Rafael Alberti, Jorge Semprún, and Teresa and Tomás Pàmies--devoted their lives to the cause of the revolution. Though they have told their separate stories, this book is the first to gather, compare, and interpret them within their historical and intellectual context and from a comparative perspective that takes into account recent developments in Soviet studies.
Anne Herrmann, a dual citizen born in New York to Swiss parents, offers in Coming Out Swiss a witty, profound, and ultimately universal exploration of identity and community. “Swissness”—even on its native soil a loose confederacy, divided by multiple languages, nationalities, religion, and alpen geography—becomes in the diaspora both nowhere (except in the minds of immigrants and their children) and everywhere, reflected in pervasive clichés.In a work that is part memoir, part history and travelogue, Herrmann explores all our Swiss clichés (chocolate, secret bank accounts, Heidi, Nazi gold, neutrality, mountains, Swiss Family Robinson) and also scrutinizes topics that may surprise (the “invention” of the Alps, the English Colony in Davos, Switzerland’s role during World War II, women students at the University of Zurich in the 1870s). She ponders, as well, marks of Swissness that have lost their identity in the diaspora (Sutter Home, Helvetica, Dadaism) and the enduring Swiss American community of New Glarus, Wisconsin. Coming Out Swiss will appeal not just to the Swiss diaspora but also to those drawn to multi-genre writing that blurs boundaries between the personal and the historical.

Despite the dynamic development of the discipline of economics, the ways in which economics is taught and how it defines its basic principles have hardly changed, resulting in economics being criticised for its inability to provide relevant insights on global challenges. In response, this book defines new principles of economics and seeks to establish economics as the science of markets.A New Principles of Economics provides an alternative conceptual framework for the study of economics, integrating recent developments and research in both economics and neighbouring social sciences. Adopting the structure of a standard principles text, it separates the study of markets as mechanisms and markets in their wider contexts. In doing so, a number of new perspectives are introduced, including approaching the economy as part and parcel of the Earth system; directly connecting the analysis of production with an analysis of technology and thermodynamic principles; explicitly treating markets as forms of social networks mediated by the institution of money; and reinstating the central role of distribution in political economy analysis. The book is accompanied by a series of video lectures prepared by the authors, which can be accessed at www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLKe-ures4LFR_uTvCekrha4WFY-OcRjHDDrawing on the latest theories and research on the economy, and including both the natural and social sciences, this text provides a holistic introduction suitable for postgraduates and other advanced students.
