There seems to be a perception among quite a few people that Quality is an "important but boring" discipline. This image also rubs off on Quality professionals such as me. We may think we are important, but others may think we are boring. Quite a few people seem to think of Quality as full of dour-faced, uninteresting people. "Very accurate, but boring," is how one person described his perception of Quality folks. I would lay most of the blame for this unexciting image of Quality people on ourselves - many of us seem to think that it is not OK for a Quality professional to wear a smile on their face or have fun while working in Quality. My own experience from years of working in Quality, however has been quite the opposite. There's never been a dull moment - thanks largely to people. Both Quality folks and others have vied with each other to provide (often unintended) entertainment. I have seen several organizations achieve great results through Quality. On the other hand, I have also come across skeptical attitudes to Quality. Attitudes to Quality can at times be hilarious. In many cases, the skepticism disappeared when people saw what they could achieve with Quality. In this little book, I have made an attempt to capture some of the funny moments in Quality. When I started writing this book, I had in mind to create something that will 'entertain, educate and enlighten', as Wodehouse might have put it. While you the reader can make up your mind about the educate and enlighten parts, I hope the book will bring a smile to your lips. Some of the funny moments do seem to have their lessons too. Some of the stories in the book may remind you of your boss of some other person you know, but - believe me - any resemblance to any person - living or otherwise -is purely coincidental (that's right ). No malice is meant toward any person.

This book is full of wacky ideas and is aimed at bringing thrills, cheers and fun to anyone who takes the trouble to peruse it. There is much ludicrousness and irony in the book, particularly in Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 which are the main chapters, which may give the impression that the author is a crackpot. Not to worry much, for crackpots can be very entertaining. The perceptive reader should be able to see some method in all the madness in the book. The loonyness in the book, of which the following are some examples, cannot be understated: -(i) Ladies look beautiful to get hitched. After marriage, they may not care about their looks and may look like husband's mother, or, grandma. (ii) Science Fact: Negative particles attract positive ones. Ugly Person's Hope: Hope ugliness (negative) attracts beauty (positive).(iii) Example Of Defense Of Ugliness: Ugly one when called ugly retorts "I'll get you glasses/better glasses so that you can clearly see beauty."(iv) A man may tell an ugly lady "Don't waste money on plastic surgery. After I change to more powerful glasses you'll look beautiful."Et al.See bedlam and a mad, mad, mad world unfold.

Humor and laughter play a vital part in our everyday social encounters. This book is concerned with the exploration of the psychology of humor and laughter by the foremost professional researchers in these areas. It examines the major theoretical perspectives underlying current approaches and it draws together for the first time the main empirical work done over the course of this century. Peter Berks brings this story up to the moment. The two major parts of the book deal with perception of and responses to humor, and its uses in society at large. The chapters themselves range from cognitive aspects of humor development, through the functions of humor and laughter in social interaction, to the use of humor by comedians and by the mass media. One of the general features of the volume is the concern with the variety of techniques and research methods which are used in studies aimed at understanding our responsiveness to humor and the contexts in which we create it.Humor and Laughter contains chapters by psychologists with longstanding research interests in humor and laughter, including Thomas R. Shultz, Mary K. Rothbart, Goran Nerhardt, Michael Godkewitsch, Walter E. O'Connell, and Harvey Mindess. Humor and Laughter presents wide-ranging theoretical, methodological, and empirical perspectives on an important area of human behavior and social interaction. This book should interest many behavioral scientists and practitioners, particularly those in social and clinical psychology, psychiatry, child psychology and education, sociology, and related disciplines.

Encompassing view of humor in recent Native North American literature, with particular focus on Native self-image and identity. In contrast to the popular cliché of the "stoic Indian," humor has always been important in Native North American cultures. Recent Native literature testifies to the centrality of this tradition. Yet literary criticism has so farlargely neglected these humorous aspects, instead frequently choosing to concentrate on representations of trauma and cultural disruption, at the risk of reducing Native characters and Native cultures to the position of the tragicvictim. This first comprehensive study explores the use of humor in today's Native writing, focusing on a wide variety of texts spanning all genres. It combines concepts from cultural studies and humor studies with approaches byNative thinkers and critics, analyzing the possible effects of humorous forms of representation on the self-image and identity formation of Native individuals and Native cultures. Humor emerges as an indispensable tool for engaging with existing stereotypes: Native writers subvert degrading clichés of "the Indian" from within, reimagining Nativeness in a celebration of laughing survivors, "decolonizing" the minds of both Native and non-native readers, andcontributing to a renewal of Native cultural identity. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of Native Studies both literary and cultural. Due to its encompassing approach, it will also provide a point of entry for the wider readership interested in contemporary Native writing. Humor and Irony in Nineteenth-Century German Women's Writing
Helen Chambers

Brings to light unsuspectedly rich sources of humor in the works of prominent nineteenth-century women writers. Nineteenth-century German literature is seldom seen as rich in humor and irony, and women's writing from that period is perhaps even less likely to be seen as possessing those qualities. Yet since comedy is bound to societal norms, and humor and irony are recognized weapons of the weak against authority, what this innovative study reveals should not be surprising: women writers found much to laugh at in a bourgeois age when social constraints, particularlyon women, were tight. Helen Chambers analyzes prose fiction by leading female writers of the day who prominently employ humor and irony. Arguing that humor and irony involve cognitive and rational processes, she highlights the inadequacy of binary theories of gender that classify the female as emotional and the male as rational. Chambers focuses on nine women writers: Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Ida Hahn-Hahn, Ottilie Wildermuth, Helene Böhlau, Marie vonEbner-Eschenbach, Ada Christen, Clara Viebig, Isolde Kurz, and Ricarda Huch. She uncovers a rich seam of unsuspected or forgotten variety, identifies fresh avenues of approach, and suggests a range of works that merit a place onuniversity reading lists and attention in scholarly studies. Helen Chambers is Professor of German at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK.

Humor, Silence, and Civil Society in Nigeria

An important contribution to the debate on forms of civil society in Africa and elsewhere, and to the global literature on dissent. In Humor, Silence, and Civil Society in Nigeria, Ebenezer Obadare offers an innovative perspective on the idea and reality of civil society. Mobilizing a wide range of concepts and insights from political science, African studies, sociology, cultural studies, media studies, anthropology, communications theory, and international development, Obadare develops a notion of civil society that radically departs from the literature's axiomatic focus on voluntary civic associations and focuses instead on more informal strategies of resistance, such as humor and silence. Compellingly argued, Humor, Silence, and Civil Society in Nigeria raises provocative questions on a topic of keen importance for students, scholars, and policymakers. Ebenezer Obadare is professor of sociology at the University of Kansas. He is coeditor of Civic Agency in Africa: Arts of Resistance in the 21st Century(James Currey, 2014).

Humor, Stress & Health

Much of contemporary psychological research on humor is based on the assumption that a sense of humor is a positive and desirable personality characteristic that enhances psychological health and well-being. Researchers generally assume that individuals with a greater sense of humor possess a number of other desirable traits, such as great optimism, self-acceptance, self-confidence and autonomy. Humorous people are also thought to be able to cope more effectively with stress, to generally experience less negative moods such as depression and anxiety, to enjoy greater physical health, and to have more positive and healthy relationships with others. This book explores the relationship between humor and stress in relation to psychological health and well-being.
