Eisenstein's last, unfinished masterpiece is a strange, complex and haunting film. Commissioned personally by Stalin in 1941, the project placed Eisenstein in the paradoxical situation of having to glorify Stalinist tyranny in the image of Ivan, without sacrificing his own artistic and political integrity - or his life. Drawing on sources that include Eisenstein's personal archive and the memoirs of those involved in Ivan's making, Joan Neuberger's vivid account reveals how, in almost impossible circumstances, he managed to create a film of cinematic innovation, intellectual depth and political critique. She reveals the film to be both a great work of art and a product of the time and place in which it was made.

This is the first study in any language of Ivan Konevskoi - poet, thinker, mystic - for many decades the 'lost genius' of Russian modernism. A fresh and compelling figure, Konevskoi plunged deeply into currents of modern mystical thought and art in the 1890s. A passionate searcher for immortality, he developed his own version of pantheism meant to guard his unique persona from dissolution in the "All-One". The poetry of Tiutchev, Vladimir Solov'ev and Rossetti, William James' psychology, paintings of Pre-Raphaelites and Arnold Boecklin, Old Russian historical myth, the Finnish Kalevala: all engaged him during his brief life. His worldview grew more audacious, his confidence in the magical power of the word grew more assured. Drowning in 1901 at 23, Konevskoi left a legacy unfinished, rich, and intriguing.

Panin's Bible Chronology is a classic work of scholarship that provides unique insights into some of the most difficult issues encountered in Biblical chronology. This is a word-for-word transcription of the 1950 edition. have kept the formatting as close as possible to that edition, and no changes of any kind were permitted in wording or punctuation. Panin begins with nine Canons by which to approach chronology, providing an approach to the subject which is designed to eliminate useless debate. His second section is a "List" of every knowable date in the Bible. This is a reference guide and is the core of the results of his years of research. The third section is a guided tour through the undergirding of the numerics woven throughout the Chronology. While he could write volumes on the subject, he limits himself to clear examples that have specific impact. The investigating researcher can rest assured that every divergence has been noted as such: there are no arbitrary corrections. Thus the archaic presentation style will make its presence felt; this gives as close as possible a sense of not only the content of his work, but the method. The length of this book is deceptively short for the subject matter. However, the reader will find it concentrated and distilled, demanding one's full attention. The facts are detailed and internally consistent, the "Canons" are salient and would hold up in any academic court, and the numerics have their own distict appeal. Those familiar with the classic problems of chronology that are revisited by each generation of scholars will appreciate the depth of Panin's often unique approach.

Ivan the Terrible Just what was so terrible about Ivan the Terrible? Most of us are familiar with this infamous nickname, but most fall short of being able to describe how he received such an ominous moniker. Maybe you've heard the stories of how Ivan killed his own son, poisoned his wives, and waged war on his neighbors, but these anecdotes are just minor details in the scheme of this man's complicated life. Inside you will read about... - Ivan, the Neglected Orphan - Ivan's Liberation of Slaves - War in the Baltic - Intrigue and Diplomacy - Ivan's Final Redemption - Ivan's Last Days And much more Ivan IV, otherwise known as Ivan the Terrible, was born with a heavy burden on his shoulders. He was thrust into the seat of what the Russians considered the Third Rome, granting him all the rights and privileges of the official steward of Orthodox Christian civilization in the east. In order to hold on to that right, he did indeed do some pretty terrible things.

With a name like Ivan the Terrible, it comes as no surprise that historians consider this Russian tsar a psychopath. Yet Ivan's personality consisted of many dualities. He channeled the Medieval era as he committed mass murder, but he also reformed Russia, centralizing it and bringing it into the Renaissance. He liked to torture animals, but he could also be found in church, banging his head in repentance until it bled. This introduction to his life explores the legacy he was born into and deftly contextualizes his cruelty within the era and culture of his rule.
