And yet, an integration of these movements has been elusive, if not impossible. In this landmark book, J.C. Smith and Carla J. The dialectics of domination and submission are central to Smith and Ferstman's argument. In a news career spanning more than sixty years, Joseph C. Harsch was a firsthand witness to many of the great events of the twentieth century. As a reporter and columnist for the Christian Science Monitor, and as a correspondent for all three of the major networks, he became one of the most respected figures in the profession, a mentor to a generation of journalists covering international affairs.At the Hinge of History is Harsch's career autobiography. What is most striking in this deftly rendered account is Harsch's uncanny knack for being at the right place at the right time. He was a reporter in Washington when President Hoover began to grasp the magnitude of the economic crisis that became known as the Great Depression. While traveling to the Soviet Union in 1941, he arrived in Hawaii just before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He was with General MacArthur in Australia on the occasion of the "I shall return" speech. He reported from the liberated death camps in 1945, went behind the newly forged Iron Curtain in 1947 and 1949, and was stationed in London when certain postwar pressures tested the Anglo-American alliance.Throughout the book, Harsch reveals an overarching perspective that places major events in a larger historical context. This is especially evident in the later chapters when he discussed the course of the Cold War, the role of ideology in the American view of China and the conduct of the Vietnam War, and the origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The book is filled with fascinating sketches of his encounters with such figures as President Roosevelt, General MacArthur, Dean Acheson, Walter Lippmann, and Adlai Stevenson.On occasion, Harsch recalls events not recounted elsewhere, and he frequently casts a new light on familiar ground. In one eye-opening chapter, for example, he describes the international effort in the 1930s to resettle European Jews in Angola—an effort that collapsed when Hitler invaded Poland. The Catholic Church saw this influence as likely to affect the accomplishment of its mission, and its pastoral efforts accordingly sought to deal with the Marxist thrust. In the late 1980s, Marxist influence in Africa declined sharply as Marxist political dominance became less intense. Nevertheless, the Church's encounter with African Marxism constituted an important chapter in both secular and ecclesiastical history. Finding a Social Voice records and analyzes the significant elements of this encounter. Father McKenna's book investigates how postcolonial African regimes under varying degree of Marxist influence have interacted with the Catholic Church, and studies how the Church has grown through its response to that interaction. The book contributes greatly to the virtually unexplored topic of church-state interaction in contemporary Africa. McKenna's claim that the Catholic Chruch's response to Marxism was a "part of its coming to maturity," part of its bringing its social perspective to bear on the processes of political, economic, and social modernization through which traditional cultures were passing, is an important contribution to the more recent literature on the emergence of "civil society" in Sub-Saharan Africa. The text also provides an introduction to post-Vatican II understandings of ecclesiastical activity in Africa. For the Russian nonconformist artists of the 1960s through the 1980s, a room or an apartment--whether one's own or someone else's--was a departure point into the world of art, a world free of limitations. An apartment, while limited in space, opened up a world of infinite space--the entire cosmos. The second oldest in a family of ten children tells his story of growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm during the great depression years (late 1920s through early 1940s); and his follow-on career in the United States Marine Corps. The family home in his early years, on Summit Ridge, had changed little from those found there in the late 1800s. No electricity, no central heat, no inside plumbing; and a dearth of other conveniences generally available at the time. In so many ways, a twentieth century family, living in a nineteenth century world. If these were hard economic times, all was softened by the warm embrace of family, a one-room school, and the Catholic Church; the three pillars around which life revolved. Then too, there was the active flirtation with nature as children interacted with rhythm of the four seasons, and the resulting kaleidoscope of events and activities occurring on a dairy farm. When in his late teens, life beyond the farm beckoned. He rejected his pious Catholic mother's less than subtle encouragement over the years to become a priest, and chose as his vehicle to escape the farm, enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. His subsequent twenty-seven years of military service was highlighted, by serving with an infantry battalion in the winter of 1950 battle at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea; and a more peaceful tour of three years at the presidential Mountain Retreat, Camp David, Maryland. Marriage to the "girl next door" and four children also form part of the scenario, as does current blissful retirement in the San Diego area in Southern California. (Joseph C.
