Having left photography behind, Jessica Lange embarked on her acting career, playing leading parts in iconic movies and winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her roles in Tootsie, in 1983, and Blue Sky, in 1995. Not until later, at the beginning of the nineties, did Jessica Lange take up her photographic exploits again. Her images are captured on her travels and wanderings - her lens has roamed through countries such as the USA, France, Finland and Italy, although she has a particular soft spot for Mexico, as she herself puts it, "for its lights and wonderful nights". The accompanying catalogue for the exhibition, bringing together the collection of 80 photographs taken over the last 20 years, is arranged into two series: 'Things I see' and 'Mexico, On Scene' and represents a journey through Jessica Lange's diary of impressions.
Jessica Antola’s first monograph is a vibrant journey through Sub-Saharan Africa. Traveling mostly by car, she captures the distinctive style and beauty of everyday life in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Togo. Her striking portraits, landscapes, and vignettes offer an intimate view of life lived in rural villages, big cities, and along the remote roadways between the two. Men dressed head to toe in elaborate African wax textiles share a motorcycle, ancestral spirits bridge earthly and supernatural worlds in masked dances, the rich red soil dusts the lush tropical jungle, a girl in an oversized straw hat steers her boat with a boldly patterned patchwork sail, and a gold jewelry-clad Kumasi King performs a warrior dance. Just as Antola is captivated by how people around the world express themselves in relation to their environments, so do these images reflect this: the astonishing variety of ways people create and define themselves daily, over and over again, through dress and ritual, work and play.
"A 'wrong' family moment that is full of truth." Like seventeenth century Dutch painters who made otherwise ordinary interior scenes appear charged with meaning, Jessica Todd Harper looks for the worth in everyday moments. The characters in her imagery are the people around her- her friends, herself, family- but it is not so much they who are important as the way in which they are organized and lit. A woman helping her child practice the piano is not a particularly sacred moment but as in a Vermeer painting, the way the composition and lighting influence the content suggests that perhaps it is.Most of the time everyday scenes don’t mean anything to us- in fact, it is a modern truism that we seek to be distracted from them. We scroll through our phones rather than be alone with our thoughts, our selves or even our families. This collection of photographs makes use of what is right in front of me, what is here, a place that many of us came to contemplate especially during the pandemic. Beauty, goodness and truth can reveal themselves in daily life, much like in Kant’s notion of the Sublime or simply in the Dutch paintings of everyday domestic scenes that are somehow lit up with purport. Our unexamined or even boring surroundings can sometimes be illuminating.
