Four hundred years ago, the pioneer men and women who first came to New Mexico were forced to make their life compatible with the earth and with their isolation. The beauty that surrounded them did not sustain them, but out of reverence for the land, there appeared the chosen ones--the "curanderos" who understood the medicinal uses of herbs; the "veijitos," the old men who made folklore, history and tradition and recounted it to the younger generations. And from this same tradition came the Patr n, a man who had the ability to channel ambition and determination, and to make the land and its people yield to the law of common interest. He was a protector, a watcher of signs; he was a code maker, a fashioner of a way of life that is sadly missing in today's world. He was called the Patr n by those whom he loved and who returned that love with work, faith and personal devotion. They called him the Patr n, but they might just as well have called him the Godfather. Jos Ortiz y Pino has portrayed New Mexico, its characters and traditions with a sagacious wit and poignant keenness that could only have emanated from one who grew up in its midst. And he has narrated for us the story of a man whose visions had no limits, a man whose dedication to his goal was matched only by his sense of justice and compassion for all men--Don Jos Ortiz, The Last Patr n.

Long obscured by larger luminaries such as Malaspina, Vancouver, and Bodega y Quadra, Jose Narvaez made major contributions in exploration of the North Pacific Coast, both in investigating the Russian intrusion into Alaska, and exploring the coastline for the mythical Northwest Passage. The Explorations: Narvaez full life story has never been told, yet he made significant discoveries during the age of exploration on America's North Pacific coast. Between 1789 and 1791, he was the first European to probe and chart Juan de Fuca Strait, sail across the large inland sea of Georgia Strait, explore its numerous islands, and discover the site of what is now western Canada's largest city-Vancouver, British Columbia. Narvaez preceded Captain George Vancouver's 1792 aboard the HMS Discovery by a full year. The 1788 Journal-First English Translation: Narvaezz log of 1788, here translated into English and printed for the first time, is a revealing and important document. In it Narvaez details Captain Jose Martinez' voyage from San Blas to the Aleutian Islands and the Spanish (ie. Narvaez) first contact with the Russian fur traders in Alaska on Kodiak Island. The lengthy journal (67 pages of text) is rich in detail, with fine descriptions of the native inhabitants of Alaska, as well as the Russians with whom the ship made contact. The Lost Journal of 1790-1791: His log of the 1791 voyage in the vicinity of Vancouver Island, lost for 150 years, is traced and its possible disposition and current whereabouts are discussed and evaluated in a full chapter.A Complete Biography: His life story spans the northwestern voyages of the late eighteenth century, the Mexican revolt following 1810, and the administration of Iturbide in the 1820s. His later work for the Mexican government included the charting of Lake Chapala, and the development of maps of western Mexico and Alta California.Additional Material: Illustrations, charts, and maps add to the usability and value of the work. A glossary for the 1788 Narrative aids the reader in locating geographical locations mentioned in the text. Four appendixes contain a history of the Santa Saturnina, its dimensions and its manifest, as well as list of Narvaez descendants.

The first biography to appear in more than a generation on the most influential Tejano leader of the nineteenth century, ‘Jose Antonio Navarro: In Search of the American Dream in Nineteenth-Century Texas’ fills one of the most glaring gaps in the current historical literature on Texas. The product of a lifetime of research by author David McDonald, this volume is sure to stand as the definitive treatment of Navarro’s life for decades to come. McDonald corrects many long-standing misconceptions concerning Navarro and fleshes out the details of his life in a way no author has done before. Born in San Antonio in 1795, Jose Antonio Navarro lived through a tumultuous era in Texas history that saw the transitions of Texas from a Spanish colony to a Mexican state, an independent republic, an American state, a Confederate state, and an American state once again. More than just bearing witness to these events, however, Jose Antonio Navarro helped shape them. He served in the legislatures of Coahuila y Texas, the Republic of Texas, and the state of Texas. He was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a steadfast defender of the rights of all Tejanos and people of Mexican descent in Texas, ensuring at both the 1836 Consultation that created the Texas Republic and the 1845 drafting of the state constitution after annexation that political rights would not be restricted solely to those with white skin and pure European ancestry. ‘Jose Antonio Navarro: In Search of the American Dream in Nineteenth-Century Texas’ is more than just a political biography; it is a story of the American Dream. Navarro and his family worked hard to improve their lives on the Texas frontier, starting with his father, an immigrant from the Mediterranean island of Corsica. Navarro was not only an influential politician, but a successful businessman and rancher. This pattern of improvement continued into the next generation of the family when Navarro’s son Angel entered Harvard College to study law. Jose Antonio Navarro was also an early friend of Stephen F. Austin, sharing a vision of Texas with the famed empresario in which both Tejanos and Anglos could thrive. Navarro believed that Texas was a place where peoples of all colours and backgrounds should be able to realise the American Dream.
Jose Marti, the United States, and the Marxist Interpretation of Cuban
This brief volume is an eloquent statement on the meaning of José Martí's thought as well as on how his thought has been harnessed to the needs of ideology in present-day Cuba. Hence, José Martí, the United States, and the Marxist Interpretation of Cuban History should quite properly be viewed as a contribution to the sociology of knowledge, and the political processing of the literature.Professor Ripoll's volume gives special attention to Martí's writings on the United States: without sparing the colonialist and annexationist currents of the times, Martí in his writing demonstrated a full and balanced sense of pluralist currents in the United States. The author sees Martí, in his desire for redemption, as a truer socialist and revolutionary than those who seek to cloak themselves in his words. Because Martí believed freedom to be indispensable for the advancement of society, efforts to hitch Martí to a single ideological post are considered futile.

A generously illustrated account of the life and work of the prominent Chicano artist, educator, and activist José Montoya (1932–2013) was a leading figure in bilingual and bicultural expression drawn from barrio life as a defining feature of U.S. culture. As an artist, poet, and musician, he produced iconic works depicting pachuco and pachuca culture based on his own experiences as a youth after World War II. These include the poem “El Louie” as well as thousands of political posters and masterful sketches. Montoya cofounded the art collective Royal Chicano Air Force and helped organize for the United Farm Workers. An influential educator, he established the Barrio Art Program in the early 1970s, and taught at California State University, Sacramento.Author Ella Maria Diaz examines a remarkable career that traversed decades, languages, media, and genres. This book is illustrated with reproductions of Montoya’s art from rarely seen archival slides and documents, as well as from private collections and the Montoya estate. Through oral histories and archival research, Diaz proposes a new model for the study of Latina/o/x artists who reject the boundaries between visual art, poetry, music, education, and community activism. This book is distributed for the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA.

José María Arguedas (1911–1969) is one of the most important authors to speak to issues of the survival of native cultures. José María Arguedas: Reconsiderations for Latin American Cultural Studies presents his views from multiple perspectives for English-speaking audiences for the first time. The life and works of José María Arguedas reflect in a seminal way the drama of acculturation and transculturation suffered not only by what we think of as the indigenous and mestizo cultures of Peru, but by other Latin American societies as well. Intricately reflecting his pluricultural and bilingual life experience, Arguedas's illuminating poetic visions of Andean culture cross multidisciplinary borders to transfigure pedagogical and social practices. Few texts convey the complexity and contradictions of an Andean cosmopolitanism with the intense accuracy of Arguedas's anthropological, ethnographic essays and literary writings. The ramifications of Arguedas's cultural critiques have yet to be assessed, particularly as a response to the disruptive forces of modernity, acculturation, and essential identity. José María Arguedas was a Peruvian ethnographer, anthropologist, folklorist, poet, and novelist. He based his novels and stories on the life and outlook of the Quechua-speaking Indians and was a pioneer of modern Quechua poetry. The present anthology brings his work to the attention of broader audiences by pulling together diverse scholarly views on Arguedas's aesthetic and multicultural contributions to the contemporary and political archipelago. It is a synthesis of his views on cultural change as it impinges upon considerations and theories of Latin American cultural studies.

A Chicano civil rights activist, he marched alongside Cesar Chavez and advanced the cause of the United Farm Workers movement to bring justice and dignity to agricultural laborers.José Montoya's Abundant Harvest honors the artist's prolific work as well as his subject matter in this energetic survey that includes eighty-one of his drawings.
