Everyone knows Mrs Danvers as a byword for menace in Hitchcock's Rebecca and as a poster girl for lesbians in the movies. But only dedicated fans know her brilliant creator. This book tells Judith Anderson's life story for the first time. It recovers her career as one of the great stars of stage and television and an important character actress in film. Born in Adelaide, Australia, in 1897, brought up by a determined single mother, she parlayed her rich, velvety voice and ability to give reality to strong emotional roles into stardom on Broadway in the 1920s. Not a conventional beauty, she was alluring, with her beautiful body, perfect dress sense, and striking, volatile personality. After playing glamorous roles, she was recognised as a Leading Lady of the American Stage under the direction of Guthrie McClintic in Hamlet and co-starring with Laurence Olivier and Maurice Evans in Macbeth. Her reputation as a great actress was confirmed by her landmark performance in 1947 in the ancient Greek Medea, adapted for her by her friend, poet Robinson Jeffers. In a long career, she appeared in Medea again in 1982 at the age of 85, playing the Nurse to fellow-Australian Zoe Caldwell's Medea.Ambitious and driven, Anderson toured extensively, made numerous highly praised appearances on television, and, after her unforgettable role as Mrs Danvers, was a sought-after character actress in film, playing her last role as Vulcan High Priestess in Star Trek III at the age of 87. She won many awards and was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire in 1960 and Companion of the Order of Australia just before her death in 1992. She had a stormy private life and two short marriages, which, she remarked, were 'much too long.'
Judith Butler: Ethics, Law, Politics

Judith Butler: Ethics, Law, Politics

The first to use Judith Butler’s work as a reading of how the legal subject is formed, this book traces how Butler comes to the themes of ethics, law and politics analyzing their interrelation and explaining how they relate to Butler’s question of how people can have more liveable and viable lives.Acknowledging the potency and influence of Butler’s ‘concept’ of gender as process, which occupies a well developed and well discussed position in current literature, Elena Loizidou argues that the possibility of people having more liveable and viable lives is articulated by Butler within the parameters of a sustained agonistic relationship between the three spheres of ethics, law and politics.Suggesting that Butler’s rounded understanding of the interrelationship of these three spheres will enable critical legal scholarship, as well as critical theory more generally, to consider how the question of life’s unsustainable conditions can be rethought and redressed, this book is a key read for all students of legal ethics, political philosophy and social theory.

Queen's Birds of Prey SeriesMercyBlazeJudithPiperRemingtonEsmereldaJudith and her warrior sisters had been around for several millennia, their time of fighting in wars and conquering kingdoms now a distant memory. Before Queen Dante passed, she graced her prized warriors-the falcon, hawk, eagle, phoenix, vulture, and owl-with humanity as well as immortality. With two of their sisters mated, Jude and Piper were finding themselves a little envious of the large homes they had. Jude and Piper both were on the hunt for nicer accommodations. Christmas was just around the corner, and neither was sure if they wanted to attend the big gala that had been arranged this year in the old castle where they had all once lived.Duncan was his mother's son, thru and thru. He had inherited the gift of foresight as well as immortality and a few other magical traits. Jude being his mate, had been foreseen by his mother, Queen Dante, several millennia ago, and Queen Dante had kept Duncan's identity a secret from them all. When Duncan approached her, Jude didn't know whether to stay put or flee. Being a warrior, she wasn't afraid of any man, it's what being with him represented, being a queen, Jude wasn't sure she was ready for that. She wasn't sure she would ever be ready for that.

Translating a popular song from Luganda into English, Moses spins a fictional story of housework and domestic labor across 40 years of Ugandan history Serubiri Moses’ Judith Namala: A Novella, the author’s fiction debut, is an experiment in adaptation, translation and genre. Set in Uganda between the late 1970s and early 2000s, the book stages the domestic dramas of Judith Namala, a Black maid, and Esther Nambi, her Black madam. Unfolding across short vignettes of fiction, poetry, Ugandan history, art criticism and journalistic reportage, Moses’ narrative is also an exercise in translation as fictocriticism: unraveling the lyrics to a popular Ugandan song into an expansive new approach to storytelling. Serubiri Moses is a Ugandan author and curator based in New York City. He is an adjunct faculty member in Art History at Hunter College, CUNY, and a visiting faculty member at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.

I have been so frequently asked how I, a woman, came by my intimate acquaintance with life in the more remote districts of the southern Appalachians, particularly in the matter of illicit distilling, that I think it not amiss to here set down a few words as to my sources of knowledge. I have always lived in a small city in the heart of the Cumberlands, and a portion of each year was spent in the mountains themselves. The speech of Judith and her friends and kin has been familiar to me from childhood; their point of view, their customs and possessions as well known to me as my own. Then when I began to write, I was one summer at Roan Mountain, on the North Carolina-Tennessee line, probably less than two hundred miles from Chattanooga by the railway, and Gen. John T. Wilder, who had campaigned all through the fastnesses of that inaccessible region, suggested to me that I buy a mountain-bred saddle horse, and ride such a route as he would give me, bringing up, after about a thousand miles of it, at my home. To follow the itinerary that the old soldier marked out on the map for me was to leave railroads and modern civilisation as we know it, penetrate the wild heart of the region, and, depending on the wayside dwellers for hospitality and lodging from night to night, be forcibly thrust into an intimate comprehension of a phase of American life which is perhaps the most primitive our country affords.
Judith and the Ubiquitous Occurences in the Forbidden Forest
Too long have I carried a buried story for the abused to be inspired by. Author P. Marcelo Balboa has created an entirely new existence in what he calls the Unworthy Cosmos. Each tale is another puzzle piece connecting a collection of stories in which every detail matters. In this installment, P. Marcelo W. Balboa shares the poetic tale of a fictional character, Judith, a motherless girl who is mistreated, abandoned, and betrayed by those she trusts most. As she contemplates whether to either surrender, end her life, or fight back against those who have robbed her of her innocence, Judith embarks on a lyrical journey inward where she soon discovers that all her choices, both good and bad, have consequences as she slowly becomes who she is meant to be. Not all is as it seems, and that includes Judith's own origins. Judith's secret history will have you rereading and piecing together yet another part of Balboa's tale. Judith and the Ubiquitous Occurences in the Forbidden Forest is the poetic tale of a girl who verbalizes the tragedy of bullying through the eyes of a victim facing a multitude of choices.

Jewish Heroines: Judith, Sarah, & Esther is a study of the Jewish heroines of the Deuterocanonical Books of the Old Testament. Readers will be introduced to the hermeneutical methods known as Rhetorical Biblical Criticism and Theological Criticism of the Bible in an attempt to better understand how the books' writers used the literary element of characterization to communicate their intended messages within their respective narratives. The book further explains why these characters can be considered a literary and theological type- the Jewish heroine-and it explores how figural-typological readings of these texts provide a clue to their interpretation in light of the wider Canon of Scripture.
