"Julian is, without doubt, one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices. She gets greater and greater in my eyes as I grow older." -- Thomas MertonJulian of Norwich (1342-c1416) is considered by many to be one of the greatest English mystics. In 1373, she received a series of sixteen visions centred on the person and sufferings of Jesus, and on the Trinity. A short time later, she wrote an account of them and much later, after prayer and reflection, wrote eighty-six chapters called Showings of Divine Love. The times in which Julian lived were fraught with political, social, and economic upheavals in both Church and state. There are, indeed, many parallels to the present age. This helps to explain why Julian speaks so loudly to us today after six hundred years of silence. This gem of a book offers insightful and challenging thoughts on Julian's writings which will aid devotion and provide inspiration for prayer and meditation.
Julian's Against the Galileans
Flavius Claudius Julianus, better known to history by the name imposed by his Christian opponents, Julian "the Apostate," was a nephew of the first Christian emperor, Constantine I. Julian is one of the most fascinating figures of late antiquity. More information is available about him from both pagan and Christian sources than about any other emperor. His reign inspired both admiration and contempt. Julian's ambitious program was to reinstate the religion of his ancestors and, in the process, to subdue the growth of the Christian church, which had achieved legitimacy under the reign of his uncle. Once in power, he immediately sought to revive the religion of classical Rome, to reform the pagan priesthood, revitalize training in classics and pagan philosophy and — as an affront to Christian prophecy — to rebuild the Jewish temple in Jerusalem. This is the first translation into modern English of the complete corpus of Julian's Against the Galileans and related writings. It not only puts the work of the philosopher-emperor into historical perspective but offers important insights into the waning days of pagan philosophy and the growth of the Christian church against the background of intellectual and religious opposition. The translations are supported by a full historical introduction to the life of Julian and a detailed treatment of his religious philosophy, including the origins of his understanding of the Christian faith. The work is essential reading for anyone interested in the religions of late antiquity, the growth of the Christian church, and the final phase of the conflict between paganism and Christian teaching.

Teachings from this fourteenth-century mystic provide spiritual direction and call for you to open yourself, body and soul, to divine love. Many people are familiar with the phrase "All shall be well" but do not know much, if anything, about Julian of Norwich, the fourteenth-century English mystic who wrote those words. Thomas Merton declared her to be "without a doubt one of the most wonderful of all Christian voices," and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says that her writings "may well be the most important work of Christian reflection in the English language."This accessible introduction to Julian's Revelations of Divine Love, an extended reflection on a series of her mystical visions, includes an informative introduction that addresses the historical, cultural and sociological context of Julian's life and writings. Mary Earle's facing-page commentary focuses on Julian's profoundly hopeful vision of humanity and God, her creative imagery and her rigorous honesty about the spiritual life. Drawing directly from Julian's text, Earle addresses a variety of topics essential to understanding Julian's mysticism, including the infinite nature of God, the life of prayer, God's suffering with us, the eternal and undying life of the soul, the motherhood of Jesus and the motherhood of God, "all shall be well" and more.Drawing directly from Julian's text, the commentary addresses a variety of topics including the infinite nature of God, the life of prayer, God's suffering with us, the eternal and undying life of the soul, the motherhood of Jesus and the motherhood of God, "all shall be well" and more.

A member of the distinguished British Huxley family, Julian Huxley (1887-1975) was a man of many talents and enormous energy. At the beginning of his career, he founded the biology department at Rice Institute, where he taught for three years before going on to achieve eminence as a biologist, statesman, and intellectual. While this volume concentrates on Huxley's contributions to field and laboratory biology, when first published in 1992, it also provided the first in-depth examination of his efforts to popularize science and to advance the human species through eugenics. Julian Huxley also encourages consideration of Huxley's religious and social views and his public role in science.

Julian Sorrento has written a New Yorker article about selflessness and altruism. In it, he portrays himself as an exploited victim of his large, dysfunctional family and a savior to the homeless youth he serves as their social worker. Following the article's publication, Julian's family comes after him with a righteous fury. They claim he has exaggerated and distorted facts, making them the villains. His agent encourages him to expand the article into a book. As Julian meets with each member of his family to hear their grievances, he also seeks-or sometimes makes up whole cloth-additional damning secrets about them to include in his memoir."Brian Alessandro has written a rollicking family story that follows a flawed and fascinating character through the ethical terrain of memoir writing. Funny, beautifully written and brimming with the best kind of big questions." -Lexi Freiman, author of The Book of Ayn"An invenetive, wildly entertaining novel, which revolves around the hazards of writing a memoir about one's family. What a cast of characters Brian Alessandro has brought to life, thorugh sparkling dialogue and vivid, often comical scenes. I enjoyed Julian's Debut immensely " -Bill Hayes, author of Insomniac City: New York, Oliver Sacks, and Me""By turns comic, wrenching, appalling, bewildered, shrewd, never nice, and always alive, Julian's Debut is a powder keg of a book that explodes and explodes." -Paul Lisicky, author of Song So Wild and Blue: A Life with the Music of Joni Mitchell"Brian Alessandro's Julian's Debut is a masterful exploration of wit and emotional depth-a fearless, unapologetic examination of the fine line between truth and betrayal in storytelling. With raw vulnerability and sardonic humor, Alessandro vividly captures a protagonist navigating the delicate balance of baring familial scars to the world. This novel delves into the complexities of loyalty, identity, and the resilience that defines us, all while embracing our beautiful imperfections." -Emanuel Xavier, author of Love(ly) Child

The first fully-realized biography of Julian-theologian, anchorite, and visionary of the Middle Ages.A groundbreaking and sometimes controversial biography that offers full tribute to the mystic Julian of Norwich. In May 1373, a thirty year-old woman living in East Anglia suffered an illness. She received visions-what she later called "sixteen showings"-revealing to her secrets of the love of God. When she fully recovered, Julian recorded and richly explored those revelations, creating what became the first English-language book written by a woman.Drawing on Julian's own writings, Frykholm's biography paints a vivid picture of the 14th century and this remarkable woman's place in it. Through plague, church corruption, economic devastation, and great personal loss, she presciently addressed her culture's greatest fears and anxieties. Ultimately, Julian's life is shrouded in mystery, and yet she has become a significant figure in contemporary spirituality today."Frykholm...has audaciously done something many people would have said was not possible: written [Julian's] biography. Frykholm has combined a careful reading of Julian's writings (at times scrupulous, at times midrashic, but at all times attentive) with a deep immersion in the scholarship of 14th-century England to offer an informed and absorbing...account of Julian's life."-Lauren F. Winner, Books & Culture"[Frykhom's] narrative, which she calls 'an act of empathetic imagination,' crackles with life."-The Denver Post"A sympathetic and realistic portrayal of a saint who, as it turns out, is both holy (that is, set apart) and as complicated as you and me....It reads with the energy of a novel and the insight of a spiritual classic."-Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, Christianity Today

Famed for his bluebonnet landscapes, San Antonio native Julian Onderdonk may be the most well-known artist Texas has ever produced. Onderdonk spent several years outside the state, though, seeking to make a name for himself in New York City. He spent much of his time in New York as the very definition of a starving artist. In Julian Onderdonk: The Lost Years, the Lost Paintings , James Graham Baker explores the artist's New York years, so often neglected by previous scholars. Through painstaking research, Baker reveals that Onderdonk painted hundreds of images under pseudonyms during his time in New York. These images not only reveal the means by which the artist struggled to make ends meet, but add another dimension to our understanding of the artist's oeuvre. It is not possible to appreciate and understand Julian Onderdonk and his art without including these works. Largely composed of landscapes and marine scenes depicting the vanishing rural areas and shorelines around New York City, they show that Onderdonk was more than simply a bluebonnet painter.

Julian of Norwich, a medieval English mystic who spent the latter part of her life as an enclosed anchoress, is largely known through her extraordinary Revelations, one of the most popular and influential works of Christian mysticism. It was also the first book ever written by a woman in the English language. But until now, the woman herself was an elusive figure. In this fascinating work, Veronica Mary Rolf has offered a convincing reconstruction of Julian s life, along with a comprehensive commentary on her Revelations rendered here in a new translation from the Middle English."
Julian of Norwich: The Showings: Uncovering the Face of the Feminine in Revelations of Divine Love
"As a major fan and promoter of Julian of Norwich, whom I call 'my favorite mystic', it is genuinely exciting to find such a faithful but freeing translation of Julian's long-lost Showings. Now they are no longer lost--for anyone " --Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation In this contemporary translation of one of the most beloved and influential mystical texts of all time, Julian of Norwich: The Showings brings the message and spirituality of this 14th-century mystic to 21st-century readers. Revelations of Divine Love, the first book published in English attributed to a woman, is also included. Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. In her visions, God was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love, and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, man is not to blame for his sin; sin is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God. Her message for today's readers is simply this: She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; they should be honored, but not dwelled upon.God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book contains some of the most profound spiritual writing ever written and remains a perennial favorite among Christians. This book was previously published as The Showings of Julian of Norwich. This new edition includes a foreword by Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upwards.
