As a sculptor and role model to aspiring young artists, Lee Kelly has played a significant role in creating the Northwest regional art scene. This book documents his sixty year career. His work has traversed the aesthetic developments of gestural abstraction, minimalism, and post-modernism, while his vocabulary has always retained a core focus on the balance and grace of architectural geometry and a craftsman's respect and understanding of the materials at hand. “I want my clothes to make you smile!”—Patrick Kelly Patrick Kelly (1954–1990) was known for his bold, bright, and joyful fashion creations that resonated in the streets and nightclubs and on the runways of New York, Paris, and beyond. The first American and the first Black designer to be admitted to the governing body of the French fashion industry, Kelly boasted celebrity couture clients including Madonna, Cicely Tyson, and Gloria Steinem. His designs are distinguished by a combination of playful aesthetics and a willingness to brazenly foreground race and heritage and push cultural boundaries, including racial tropes like golliwogs, or Black baby dolls. An eye-opening presentation of largely unknown figurative drawings by a renowned pioneer of abstraction Featuring one hundred figurative works on paper by Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015), this volume shows a new side of an artist best known for abstraction. These informal depictions of friends and expressive self-portraits—all rarely or never previously displayed or published—span the entirety of Kelly’s career, from the mid-1940s to the early 2000s. Throughout his life, Kelly made portraits as a means of keeping his hand adept at drawing, which provided a place to test his ideas, refine his bold use of lines, and interrogate the space between naturalism and abstraction. These works also capture his social milieu, which intersected with other creative circles and the queer community. His body of work, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and prints, illustrates his unprecedented experiments with form and color. Less well known are his eight collages, known as Spectrum Colors Arranged by Chance (1951), which led directly to some of the artist’s most iconic early works. Made from papier gomette, or sticky squares of colored paper used by French schoolchildren, these collages represent Kelly’s early exploration of non-compositional strategies. Created by using chance operations to place the gomette on grids, Spectrum Colors Arranged by Chance boldly anticipates the evolution of Kelly’s innovative methods.
