Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment: Strategies For Self-Improvement and Change, Pathways to Responsible Living
Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment: Strategies for Self-Improvement and Change (SSC), The Participant’s Workbook, is a 50-session, comprehensive guide, designed to help individuals overcome substance abuse, criminal behavior, and antisocial tendencies. It is structured into three phases: Challenge to Change, Commitment to Change, and Ownership of Change, each focusing on specific skills and strategies for personal growth and responsible living. The Workbook is intended for use by justice involved clients with co-occurring substance use issues and criminal conduct, guided by counselors skilled in Motivational Interviewing and Cognitive-Behavioral treatment techniques. The curriculum is designed to be delivered in structured treatment settings including jails, prisons, parole, outpatient and residential community settings. It can be delivered in group or individual treatment modalities. Phase I: Challenge to Change This phase introduces participants to the Cognitive-Behavioral (CB) Map, which helps identify how thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs influence emotions and actions. Participants learn to recognize high-risk situations and thinking patterns that lead to substance abuse and criminal conduct. Key skills include mental self-control, relaxation techniques, and managing urges and cravings. Modules focus on understanding personal history, identifying problem areas, and setting relapse and recidivism prevention goals. Participants develop a Master Profile (MP) and Master Assessment Plan (MAP) to guide their journey, using worksheets and exercises to reflect on past behaviors, identify triggers, and set goals for change. Phase II: Commitment to Change This phase emphasizes skill development for responsible living, including problem-solving, assertiveness, and managing anger in relationships. Participants learn to give and receive compliments, resolve conflicts, and build healthy intimate relationships. Modules address moral reasoning, empathy, and prosocial behavior, encouraging respect for others and positive community contributions. Cognitive-behavioral strategies, such as the STEP Method (Situation, Thinking Change, Emotions, Positive Action/Outcome), help participants achieve positive outcomes by changing their thoughts and beliefs. Communication skills, such as active sharing and listening, are emphasized to improve relationships and prevent relapse and recidivism. Phase III: Ownership of Change The final phase focuses on taking full ownership of the changes made in earlier phases. Participants strengthen relapse and recidivism prevention plans, develop critical reasoning skills, and create a balanced lifestyle. Modules include managing work and time, engaging in healthy leisure activities, relaxation techniques, healthy eating, and physical activity. Participants are encouraged to give back to their community through mentoring and role modeling, reinforcing their commitment to responsible living. The goal is to sustain a drug-free and crime-free life while contributing positively to the community.

Havana has always been a dynamic city, and its unique architecture makes it one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Until recently, the closed nature of contemporary Cuban society has frozen and preserved much of Havana's urban design and simultaneously prevented many visitors from experiencing its wide range of architectural influences, which cross-reference to create a stunning, unified "work of art." In this documentary-style history of old Havana, readers are invited to tour the city's buildings alongside its culture, people, plazas and parks, pedestrian environment, monuments, food, music, dance, colonial history, and iconic traditions, from cigars to the Tropicana Supper Club. Learn why Havana has the classic order, neighborhood balance, architectural elegance, and pedestrian harmony that urban planners long for, and discover the ways in which it is not just a city but a celebration of the Cuban way of life and its Creole roots.

Volumes in the Global Issues series address the problems of energy and environment as matters of international concern, and a forthcoming volume provides an overview of all these areas. The issues in the series are each considered within a systematic framework common to all. Each volume begins with a historical background and then the issues are placed in their contemporary context. Four distinct perspectives are presented: (1) Who are the "global actors" involved in the issue, and what are the linkages among them? (2) What prevailing values are operating, and how have the relevant actors responded to those values? (3) What policies are applied by these actors at the global level, and how are these policies determined? (4) What are the possible results of the values and policies of these global actors?

Driving with Care: Education and Treatment of the Underage Impaired Driving Offender is a supplementary guide for the Driving with Care Series. It deals specifically with Adolescent/young adult impaired driving, which presents a host of special challenges and special treatment issues. Underage impaired driving represents 15% of the DUI arrests nationwide, which translates into roughly 150,000 individuals a year. Underage drivers present a special challenge for education and treatment as their motivation to drink and drive is often quite different from the adult offender. Thus, the authors have compiled a rich set of educational protocols and treatment strategies that can supplement the various levels of treatment provided in all three Driving with Care workbooks. Section I provides a theoretical foundation for understanding underage impaired driving, including the scope, incidence, and prevalence of the problem and defines the causal and risk factors associated with underage drinking and driving. It also defines and covers legal and regulatory interventions that have been effective for treatment and provides guidelines that enhance the treatment and rehabilitation of this group. Section II provides specific guidelines and enhancements for the delivery of DWC for underage drivers, including activities, handouts, and various assessment tools.SAGE offers treatment and training programs for mental health providers that you can easily incorporate into your existing programs.

This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews on proximal sensors in agriculture. The first chapter addresses the use of proximal sensors to evaluate crop health and performance throughout the growing season. The chapter reviews the evolution of crop sensors, as well as the issues and limitations facing further development, including the need to develop sensors equipped with the ability to detect stresses other than nitrogen. The second chapter reviews recent advances in using proximal sensors to detect crop health status in horticultural crops. The chapter considers the application of sensors to detect micro-environmental parameters linked to pathogen lifecycles which can then be utilised to predict disease risk. The third chapter reviews advances in using proximal spectroscopic sensors to assess soil health. It assesses principles and technologies, key properties measured, advantages and disadvantages together with applications in improving soil management. The final chapter discusses advances in the use of proximal sensor fusion and multi-sensor platforms for improved crop management. The chapter considers the combination of remote sensing from satellites and weather station data as the basis for crop growth models and explores the benefits of utilising a selection of tools to investigate yield prediction.

I write this foreword for two reasons: first, to acknowledge the gratitude of our court system to scientists willing to lend their talents to forensic tasks, and of myself, in particular, for the pathbreaking work of Eric Stallard, Kenneth G. Manton, and Joel E. Cohen in the Manville Asbestos Case; and second, because their work suggests both great strength and utility in their statisti cally based design and its limitations in predicting events strongly affected by political and social choices that are difficult to foretell as well as by de mographic and epidemiologic factors that can be prophesied with somewhat more confidence - at least in the short term. It is by now almost axiomatic that almost every important litigation in the United States requires experts to help judges and juries arrive at an under standing of the case sufficient to permit a sensible resolution within the flexible scope of our rules of law. The Supreme Court has laid down useful rough cri teria for the courts in assessing the capability of proffered experts beginning 1 with the Daubert line of cases. It has also allowed the courts to appoint ex 2 perts to supplement those designated by the parties. Dr. Joel E. Cohen and Professor Margaret E. Berger were appointed by me in the Manville asbestos cases pursuant to Rule 706 of the Federal Rules of Evidence to help project future claims. Discovery provisions have improved utilization of experts by 3 requiring advance reports and depositions.
