East Kent at War

East Kent at War

David G. Collyer

nidottu
During the Second World War, East Kent was at the forefront of the defence of the United Kingdom. In 1940 the ports of Dover, Ramsgate, Folkestone and Margate took part in the Dunkirk evacuation, while airfields such as Manston, Hawkinge and Lympne were active in refuelling aircraft involved in the Battle of Britain. It was also from Dover that the first steps for D-Day were initiated, with commando raids on French beaches from Royal Navy motor launches. German signals were monitored and subsequently jammed by a series of experimental units. Balloons launched from Kingsdown carried leaflets to enemy territory, while others defended harbours and factories from dive bombers.Throughout the remainder of the war, including the defence against the V1 flying bomb attacks of the summer of 1944 and the supply of both men and material to the allies as they advanced through Europe, East Kent played a vital role.

Corita Kent, an American nun and pop artist, led a life of creativity and love that took her in unexpected directions. In this engaging portrait, Sr. Rose Pacatte, FSP, offers an in-depth look at Corita Kent, gentle revolutionary of the heart, letting the beauty and truth of her life and art speak for itself.Frances Elizabeth Kent’s rise to fame coincided with some of the most socially volatile years of the twentieth century. As Sr. Mary Corita of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters, she became a nationally-respected artist—though the Archbishop of her home city of Los Angeles regarded her work as blasphemous. Seeing no contradiction between the sacred and the secular, Corita designed the US Postal Service’s iconic “Love” stamp and created the largest copyrighted work of art in the world, on a gas tank for the Boston Gas Company. These examples and more exemplify the theology and point of view of one of the twentieth century’s most famous and fascinating artists.

This beautifully produced volume celebrates the life and career of Adaline Kent (1900 1957), a member of one of the Bay Area s most productive and innovative midcentury artistic groups. Kent is linked to modernist artists Ruth Asawa, Constantin Brancus?i, Jean Arp, Isamu Noguchi, and Clyord Still. Texts by a diverse range of scholars cover such subjects as infinity and movement in Kent s work; the influence of nature; setting her work in the context of the organic abstractions of other American midcentury artists such as Noguchi, Arshile Gorky, and Roberto Matta; and the artistic milieu at the San Francisco Art Institute that surrounded Kent and her husband, artist Bob Howard.

James City County was created in 1634 and was one of the eight original shires. It is considered the mother county of the state, and with in it lie the first church & parish. It is the the parent county in whole or part to: Charles City, New Kent, Surry, & York, counties. This county has sufferd great loss of records due to the Civil War.
