Luke Wadding, the Irish Franciscans, and Global Catholicism
This book explores the endeavors and activities of one of the most prominent early modern Irishmen in exile, the Franciscan Luke Wadding. Born in Ireland, educated in the Iberian Peninsula, Wadding arrived in Rome in 1618, where he would die in 1657. In the "Eternal City," the Franciscan emerged as an outstanding theologian, a learned scholar, a diplomat, and a college founder. This innovative collection of chapters brings together a group of international scholars who provide a ground-breaking analysis of the many cultural, political, and religious facets of Wadding’s life. They illustrate the challenges and changes faced by an Irishman who emerged as one of the most outstanding global figures of the Catholic Reformation. The volume will attract scholars of the early modern period, early modern Catholicism, and Irish emigration.

Luke and the Jewish Other takes up the debated question of the orientation of Luke toward the Jewish people. Building on recent studies in the social history of early Jewish-Christian relations, it offers an analysis of Luke’s portrayal of Jewish and Christian identities that challenges the common assumption that the construction of religious identity in antiquity necessarily depended upon antagonistic relations with others. Taking account of the deep and often divisive difference that belief in Jesus made in Luke’s community, the author argues that Luke hoped to bring about both a rapprochement with and the conversion of contemporary Jews. Through this account of identity and alterity in the Gospel of Luke, the book cuts across boundaries of biblical studies, history, theology, and social theory, proposing a way forward for the study of Luke’s relation to Judaism and of the "parting of the ways" between Jews and Christians in the early Common Era.

Luke Walton (Esprios Classics)
Horatio Alger, Jr. (January 13, 1832 - July 18, 1899) was an American writer. He wrote magazine stories and poems, a few novels for adults, and 100 plus boys' books. His boys' books were hugely popular. Alger was born in Massachusetts, and attended Harvard College. He became a Unitarian minister, but his career as a clergyman was brief. It ended when his congregation charged him with child molestation. Criminal charges were not placed against him, but his career in the church was finished. He moved to New York City to become a professional writer. In 1868, Alger found his place in the literary world with his fourth boys' book, Ragged Dick.

This book provides a new view on Luke's Gospel by introducing it as the source of the New Testament. A close reading of the works of Flavius Josephus and Latin inscriptions confirms the validity of the chronological landmarks delivered by the Evangelist. Together these three sources form a cohesive whole like a puzzle with finely-tuned pieces. The Codex Bezae Cantabrigiensis, which preserves the oldest known text of the Gospels and Acts written in Greek, attests that the Evangelist fulfilled the purpose of veracity advertised in the preface. The reliability of his work is linked to its early publication, in the decade following the events so that even Mark and Paul had knowledge of it. From this point of view, the "Lukan priority" that preserves the historical truth about Jesus' life, would no longer be just an assumption. In this context, the conditions under which the Third Gospel was written are revealed, and with them, the objectives pursued by those who assumed responsibility for it, and who can be identified. Let us hope these pages will encourage other biblical Scholars to investigate the Third Gospel and Acts from the perspective of the "Lukan priority".

Parents - Do you want your children to realise there is also a world away from their console? If you have to surgically remove the controller from their grasp, you'll love this book.Kids - Don't worry, you'll also love this book. It's absolutely hilarious. For some kids, playing their game console was a matter of life and death... But for ten-year-olds Luke and Conor, it was more important even than that In fact, the topic of conversation on every boy's - and even a fair few girl's - lips was the latest shoot-em-up survival game called Hundred-to-One. The prospect of competing in the Hundred-to-One world championship tournament, with untold riches in prize money and international bragging rights, was simply irresistible. The only thing standing in Luke and Conor's path to victory was the Isle of Man regional heat they'd have to win. Oh, and the fact that every kid in every school everywhere had exactly the same dream they did. So, yeah, there was that as well. But Luke and Conor wouldn't let anything stand in their way Well, okay, apart from homework, maybe, and the school bully, and a younger boy with a watery eye and a gammy leg... and along, of course, with their mums' rubbish insistence that they set the game controller down and (*gasp *) venture outside for fresh air on occasion. The lads were determined, though. And their obsession for gaming glory in a virtual world, as it happened, could also open up the possibility of new friendships and new adventure in the real world. A hilarious, feel-good book that's genuinely one for the whole family.

Transported to the 21st Century, Luke, the gospel writer, tells the story of his unexpected spiritual mission to help a young Lakota man on a vision quest. The Holy Spirit has sent him before Čhaŋt Little Hawk, in a cave of the Black Hills of South Dakota. Neither expects such a flesh-and-blood encounter spanning two millennia. Accepting this role, Luke provides spiritual wisdom while learning about and affirming Lakota spirituality. Čhaŋt helps Luke overcome disorientation as he encounters the world two thousand years after his time. Luke learns about many events, good and bad since Jesus walked the Earth. Concerning the complicated history between the Lakota and their conquerors, Luke provides some consolation, and together he and Čhaŋt confront the most difficult spiritual questions facing humankind. As they discuss the teachings of the Lakota holy man, Black Elk, Čhaŋt begins to see remarkable similarities between the two men. The dominant culture around the Lakota reservations, however, is in turmoil. Americans feel rising mistrust toward each other, dividing themselves into tribes that sometimes see others as mortal enemies. Will this situation intrude on the personal relationship between Čhaŋt and Luke?
