When rock-loving Marian stumbles upon a perfect, pointy stone in the park, she just knows it is a dinosaur fossil! But her geologist mom and her fossil-hunting hero remain unconvinced, so there’s only one thing to do — Marian has to find the rest of the dinosaur. One by one, she excavates more fossils in her backyard (though her parents keep mistaking them for gardening tools and household objects). Piecing them together is puzzling, but Marian’s dinosaur is shaping up to be her best discovery yet. This playful story told through the eyes of imaginative Marian is accompanied by real facts about fossils, further reading and details about real life fossil discoveries made by kids. Marian Grey or, The heiress of Redstone Hall (Edition1)
A chilly dusk settles over a Victorian parlour, where laughter and mischief spark in the firelight-yet beneath the gaiety, hearts ache for understanding, and the smallest acts of kindness ripple through a household in quiet, transformative ways. In these pages, the gentle struggles and triumphs of children are painted with exquisite sympathy, inviting readers to step into nineteenth-century England and witness the redemptive power of compassion and forgiveness. Here, the dilemmas of family relationships and the challenges of growing up are rendered with the same warmth and moral clarity that have made classic British literature endure for generations. This rediscovered gem of Victorian children's fiction weaves together the innocence of a bedtime reading tale with the deeper threads of Christian moral stories, inviting reflection on the choices that shape character and community. Echoing the spirit of beloved works by Charlotte M Yonge and the heartfelt optimism of Little Lord Fauntleroy, it offers a vivid portrait of childhood shaped by the values and expectations of the Victorian era setting. The narrative, rich in period detail, draws readers into a world where kindness is both a comfort and a quiet rebellion, and where even the most wayward soul may find redemption and forgiveness amidst the routines of daily life. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations, ensuring that its gentle wisdom and evocative storytelling continue to inspire. More than just a reprint, this edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure, perfect for lovers of children's chapter books and those who cherish the enduring legacy of classic literature. Whether discovered anew or revisited as a childhood favourite, its tender lessons and luminous prose remain as vital now as they were to readers long ago.
When Marian Sang: The True Recital of Marian Anderson
Children's Literature Legacy Award WinnerA harmonious introduction to one of our country's most important singers and role models--as envisioned by Newbery Honoree Pam Mu oz Ryan and Caldecott Medalist Brian Selznick.Marian Anderson is best known for her historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939, which drew an integrated crowd of 75,000 people in pre-Civil Rights America. While this momentous event showcased the uniqueness of her voice, the strength of her character, and the struggles of the times in which she lived, it is only part of her story. Like the operatic arias Marian would come to sing, Ryan's text is as moving as a libretto, and Selznick's pictures as exquisitely detailed and elaborately designed as a stage set. What emerges most profoundly from their shared vision is a role model of courage.

Marian and Robin's carefree childhood in Sherwood Forest takes a dark turn when the arrival of a cruel new lord sets off a series of intrigues including robbery, kidnapping and murder. Marian watches in horror as the man strides, weapon in hand, toward where Robin lies helpless. But when Robin's plan to exact vengeance goes awry, Marian must risk her own life to save him. A rash of robberies has been plaguing the great houses of Nottinghamshire. Knowing what she does about him, Marian is forced to ask herself whether Robin is capable of the crime spree or if his was just a one-off act of revenge. Marian's attempts to uncover the truth lead her into the path of the handsome young Guy of Gisbane - and danger. Kidnapped and hopelessly lost in the forest, Marian has only her wits to rely on if she and Robin hope to survive.WHO THIS BOOK IS FOR: 'A Viper in the Forest' is ideal for any young reader looking for a female role model who stands strong in the face of adversity. This brave young woman holds her own in a medieval world of cruelty, injustice and corruption. WHAT IT IS: The first book in the Young Marian Series, 'A Viper in the Forest' by Mandy Webster is a prequel to the classic Robin Hood legend. Often portrayed merely as Robin Hood's love interest or a member of his troupe of merry men, 'A Viper in the Forest' reimagines Marian as a hero in her own right. Young Marian will inspire readers with her fearless attitude and strong sense of loyalty and honour.WHY YOU WANT TO READ IT: The history of Maid Marian has long been shrouded in mystery. 'A Viper in the Forest' takes the reader on a journey to the root of the Marian story, exploring the forces that shaped the woman at the heart of the classic adventures. Readers will be inspired by the heroism and courage that have made her so integral to the Robin Hood legend. There is a shortage of feminine heroines in Middle Grade Literature who challenge the issues of social inequality, yet in this cruel medieval setting in which women are so often overlooked and oppressed Marian stands out as a heroine unwilling to accept the restrictions society wants to set on her. Part Katniss - capable and fearless; part Hermione - smart, sensible, and a grounding influence on her more impulsive friends; Marian combines these qualities with humour and warmth. Young Marian is an inspiration for any female reader who is searching for role models and leaders as she navigates the often challenging obstacles that teen life brings about.

The Marian Exiles

The Marian Exiles

First published in 1938, C. H. Garrett's The Marian Exiles provides details of almost 800 individuals who left England in the reign of Mary Tudor for fear of religious or political persecution. She has searched through continental archives, particularly in Switzerland and Germany, to produce brief biographies of the known exiles, information which was not readily available to English scholars. A significant minority of the emigrants became important under Elizabeth I, and it is clear that they remained in contact with family and friends in England while abroad. The Protestant views of some of the exiles were radicalised by their experiences in Europe, and some attempts to foster plots against Mary were made. Frankfurt expelled John Knox for seditious preaching against Mary, and the town of Wesel asked its English congregation to leave. While some of Garrett's hypotheses are now outdated, the Census of Exiles remains a valuable resource.
