Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, the Last Interview

Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, the Last Interview

In July 1962, Marilyn Monroe was at a crossroads. At thirty-six years old, and having just been fired by the studio from her current picture, Something’s Gotta Give, she was struggling with fame, age, and a studio system in which she no longer fit. When she sat down to give Richard Meryman an interview, she had a lot to say. Originally intended to be an interview just about fame, over the course of eight hours, Marilyn talked about her entire life. Only a small portion of the interview was published in Life magazine. When she died, just two days before the article was published, Meryman put the rest of her interview in his files, never to see the light of day. Documenting this landmark interview was photojournalist Allan Grant. His images of Marilyn would be her last photo shoot—in her home, in casual clothes, being the glorious free spirit she was. Grant captured every emotion of the interview in glorious images, only a few of which were published with the interview excerpt. The rest, just like the interview, sat in his archive, waiting to be rediscovered. Marilyn Monroe: The Last Photographs, The Lost Interview is Marilyn Monroe in her own words—the words that haven’t been published, until now. In this recently restored complete transcript, Marilyn very candidly talks about her life, her childhood, fame, the struggles with the studios, her approach to her work, celebrity, being a sex symbol, and more. At times joyous, silly, serious, and pensive, it is a Marilyn that the world has never heard. Accompanying the interview are more than 300 of Grant’s extraordinary pictures taken for the interview, most never published until now. This beautifully produced book offers readers a glimpse into Marilyn’s mindset during her last days as she began to assert control of her career and address her relationship with celebrity. Deepening the understanding of Marilyn’s talents, humanity, and true legacy, and the appreciation of her true beauty, this is a fitting tribute to one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century.

Marilyn Monroe has been gone for over sixty years, and yet people are still talking about her. What, exactly, is the spell she casts on so many? Stunning, exciting to watch, incredibly famous, Monroe lived a very public life and died young, with a sad suddenness. All of this is true, and yet there is so much more to her story. On Marilyn Monroe: An Opinionated Guide looks past the sensation to the real legacy -her richly varied body of work. Both during her life and following her death, Monroe was dismissed as more of a phenomenon than an actor, often an object of ridicule instead of a performer whose work could be taken seriously. Even when films such as The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot saw immense success, Monroe seldom got her due as the inventive and accomplished performer she was. The truth that lay behind the dazzling surface was that she was one of the hardest working of actors. Rigorously applying both skillful technique and an inherent charisma, she was able to create truly unforgettable performances. In this lively guide, Richard Barrios looks beyond the ballyhoo and legend at Monroe's best-known films, and some that even today remain obscure. Besides her films, it also addresses the work she did on television and the stage, as well as her underrated abilities as a vocalist. Both an informative study and a perceptive critical assessment, On Marilyn Monroe: An Opinionated Guide gives this brilliant performer the attention she desired-that of an artist whose work deserves both examination and celebration.

Before Marilyn tells the story of Marilyn Monroe’s modelling career, during which time she was signed to the famous Blue Book Agency in Hollywood. The head of the agency, Miss Emmeline Snively, saw potential in the young woman and kept detailed records and correspondence throughout their professional relationship and beyond. On the day of Monroe’s funeral, Snively gave an interview from her office, talking about the girl she had discovered, before announcing, rather dramatically, that she was closing the lid on her Marilyn Monroe archive that day – to ‘lock it away forever’. This archive was purchased by Astrid Franse, and together with bestselling Marilyn Monroe biographer Michelle Morgan they draw on this collection of never-before-seen documents, letters and much, much more. Before Marilyn explores an aspect of Monroe’s life that has never been fully revealed – by charting every modelling job she did, and illustrating the text with rare and unpublished photographs of the young model and her mentor.

Celebrate Marilyn Monroe, whose monumental reputation endures well beyond the decades since her death; in a gorgeous presentation that is as glamorous as the actress herself. "For 30 years Douglas Kirkland has made his living by doing what some photographers might gladly do without charge: taking pictures of glamorous celebrities. In creating the kind of poster-perfect images publicity agents dream of - Marilyn Monroe clad only in silk sheets, for example - he has few peers." Andy Grunberg, The New York Times "Though portraiture is a great strength - [Kirkland's] initial apprenticeship was with Irving Penn - it's his journalistic eye that makes for the most striking images." Fred Schruers, Portfolio Magazine On assignment for Look magazine to photograph the movie star in 1961, Douglas Kirkland photographed Marilyn Monroe and made history for both himself and for the actress. Working in the intimate confines of an unmade bed, the result - still amazing today - is a series of some of the most spontaneous and flirtatious photographs ever taken of this film legend. They made the photographer's career and added a new facet to that of the actress. The complete collection of the shoot is accompained here in a book that belongs on the shelf of every collector, devotee, and connoisseur of the icon that was Marilyn Monroe, the genius that is Douglas Kirkland, or both.

Norman Brokaw was CEO and Chairman of the William Morris Agency from 1989 to 1997, but his legacy may lie in his ascent from mailroom clerk to agent for some of Hollywood’s most iconic figures of the late 20th Century: Marilyn Monroe, Kim Novak, Elvis (and Colonel Parker), Natalie Wood, Loretta Young, Clint Eastwood, Danny Thomas, Dick Van Dyke, Berry Gordy, Bill Cosby, Donna Summer, Brooke Shields plus many more. Under his guidance, the agency created a television department in the early 1950s, where he persuaded many skeptical Hollywood stars to make the move to the new medium. Under his influence on the late 1970s the agency began representing politicians, most notably among them President Gerald Ford. Much of what came to be known as American popular culture had its epicenter at William Morris, and Norman’s fingerprints can be found on most of it. As actress Kim Novak has said, “I have never known anyone who was so eager, so interested, or so positive.”
